January 11, 2012 Two-day Personnel Certification Accreditation Workshop will introduce international standard ANSI/ISO/IEC 17024, General requirements for bodies operating certification schemes for persons. Discussions focus on building understanding of standard's requirements and benefits. Two-day Certificate Issuers' Accreditation Workshop will introduce American National Standard ASTM E2659-09, Standard Practice for Certificate Programs, and Institute's Certificate Accreditation Program, or ANSI-CAP.

Three titles will initially be available on SAE International's online bookstore: "From Engineer to Manager: Mastering the Transition," "Battery Management Systems for Large Lithium-Ion Battery Packs," and "Autonomous Ground Vehicles." This agreement is part of SAE International's Content Partnership Program, which seeks to expand SAE International's publishing initiatives.

January 11, 2012 According to report released by Defense Industrial Base Task Force, impending cuts to defense budget will stifle ability of defense industry to deliver innovation and urgent wartime capabilities. Report concluded that smaller budgets would force layoff of skilled technical personnel, freeze investments, and escalate pace of mergers and acquisitions. Respondents expect that cuts to procurement and R/D will be frontloaded in first several years.
U.S. Construction Unemployment jumps to 16% in December.

January 11, 2012 Despite addition of 17,000 jobs in December, construction industry unemployment rate jumped to 16% last month, an increase from 13.1% in November, but down from 20.7% same time last year. For all of 2011, construction industry added 46,000 jobs, representing best industry performance since January 2007. According to ABC Chief Economist Anirban Basu, increase in construction unemployment is primarily associated with seasonal factors and should not be interpreted as evidence of industry decline.

Manufacturing Employment improves in December.

January 10, 2012 According to Bureau of Labor Statistics, unemployment rate fell from revised 8.7% in November to 8.5% in December. In addition, nonfarm payrolls increased by 200,000, exceeding expectations which had predicted rise of 150,000. Manufacturing employment jumped by 23,000 net new workers in December, nearly mirroring increase found in recent ADP report. In 2011, U.S. economy added 1.64 million new jobs, surpassing 940,000 net new workers created in 2010.

January 10, 2012 To help determine best placement equipment setup to meet needs for speed, capability, and accuracy, IPC released IPC-9850 Rev A, Surface Mount Placement Characterization, making it easier to quantify performance of placement equipment. New method calculates Expanded Measurement Uncertainty, which combines all measurement uncertainty of system. Individual factors included in EMU are gage repeatability and reproducibility variance, non-linearity, resolution, hysteresis, and artifact uncertainty.

January 10, 2012 IPC ended 2011 with 3,215 members, the greatest number of members ever achieved in organization's history. Members are companies from every level of electronics supply chain: printed board manufacturers, electronics manufacturing services companies, OEMs, and industry suppliers. According to communications study by third-party consultant, 94% of IPC members surveyed agreed that IPC offers the most comprehensive and reliable information for electronics industry professionals.
Manufacturing Technology Orders up 73.9% from 2010.

January 10, 2012 According to AMTDA and AMT, November U.S. manufacturing technology orders totaled $430.17 million, which was down 6.9% from October but up 26.6% when compared to total of $339.68 million reported for November 2010. With year-to-date total of $4,956.51 million, 2011 is up 73.9% compared with 2010. Order slowdown in metal cutting equipment was countered by acceleration in fabricating sector and contributed to an increase over 2010 of nearly 75%.

CRS is nation's only certification program that focuses on advanced technical study of Oriental and specialty rugs with emphasis on history of handmade rugs, rug identification, cleaning and repair techniques, and potential cleaning problems based on rug's origin and construction.

January 6, 2012 NSF International and Underwriters Laboratories have announced agreement to partner on health-based American National Standard, NSF/UL 440, for volatile organic emissions from building products and interior materials, furnishings, and finishes. Under partnership, standard will be developed in accordance with NSF's ANSI accredited procedures, with project management support provided by both organizations.

January 6, 2012 NEMA HP7 covers specific requirements for PVC, PVC/polyamide, PE, and PE/polyamide insulated stranded wire designed for internal wiring of high reliability electrical and electronic equipment. Publication addresses 600 V (Type B, BN, J, and JN), 1,000 V (Type C and CN) and 3,000 V (Type D and DN) wire and permits continuous operating temperature ratings of -55 to +105°C or +75°C (type J and JN only) with either tin or silver coated conductors.
