Focused on $628 billion equipment finance sector, forecast provides 3-6 month outlook for industry investment with data, including summary of investment trends in key equipment markets, credit market conditions, U.S. macroeconomic outlook, and key economic indicators. According to report, investment in equipment and software will grow by 9% in 2012.
NEMA reiterates that light bulb efficiency standards remain.

December 21, 2011 NEMA remains committed to lighting standards established in Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007. Rider related to light bulbs on FY 2012 Omnibus funding bill does not repeal or adjust standards or their effective timeline, but imposes funding limitations on DOE to enforce standards for FY2012. Inability of DOE to enforce standards would allow those who do not respect rule of law to sell inefficient light bulbs in U.S., creating competitive disadvantage for compliant manufacturers.
JSC, Texas A&M Partner to move Shuttle Motion Simulator.

December 21, 2011 Agreement between NASA's Johnson Space Center (JSC) and Texas A&M University pertains to moving primary space shuttle launch and landing trainer, Shuttle Motion Simulator, to College Station. Facility that formerly housed shuttle simulators at JSC continues to be used for International Space Station training. Partnership will help ensure this unique historical artifact and space shuttle training technology it represents is preserved and used to inspire future engineers.

At hearing, Judge Amy Berman Jackson acknowledged complexities of the presented issues and encouraged Board attorneys to discuss delaying implementation of rule until court has reached its opinion.

December 20, 2011 ASABE announced approval by ISO of 5 ISO New Work Item proposals to update and improve standards used to define requirements for symbols used in tractors, machinery for agriculture and forestry, and powered lawn and garden equipment. Project meeting is scheduled for February 22-23 in Paris, France, where team of volunteers will work to enhance, update, clarify, and include additional symbols not presently included in current edition of standard.
PMA releases Dec 2011 Business Conditions Report.

December 20, 2011 According to Business Conditions Report, 33% of metalforming participants expect economic activity to improve during next 3 months, up from 11% in November, and only 10% report that activity will decline, down from 28% in November. Report also shows that 40% of metalforming companies expect increase in incoming orders during next 3 months, up from 21% in November. Percentage of companies with portion of workforce on short time or layoff declined to 12% in December, down from 17% in November.

December 20, 2011 Method for making cylindrical specimen of roller-compacted concrete in gyratory compactor is primary purpose of ASTM WK33682, Test Method for Preparation, Compaction and Density Determination of Roller-Compacted Concrete Specimens by Means of the Superpave Gyratory Compactor. Subcommittee member Stacy G. Williams commented that since RCC pavements are compacted akin to asphalt pavements, laboratory-scale compactor that imitates field roller compaction would also be appropriate for RCC.

Growth is expected to continue but at slower pace for 2012-2014. State of general economy, steel prices, and protracted slump in single-family housing starts are significant negative factors influencing future sales, while key positive factor is continued strength in export demand.

NREL Research marks step toward next generation solar cells.

December 19, 2011 Researchers from NREL have reported first solar cell that produces photocurrent with external quantum efficiency greater than 100% when photoexcited with photons from high energy region of solar spectrum. External quantum efficiency reached peak value of 114%, marking promising step toward developing Next Generation Solar Cells for both solar electricity and solar fuels that will be competitive with, or perhaps less costly than, energy from fossil or nuclear fuels.
AEM commends Senate action on ag machinery legislation.

December 19, 2011 AEM applauds U.S. Senate committee approval of legislation to improve safety on rural roads by providing consistency regarding lighting and marking requirements for agricultural machinery. Legislation was included in a highway safety bill approved by voice vote of Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation. Association expects to now see measure combined with "highway bill" due for consideration early in 2012.

December 19, 2011 ASTM D7767, Test Method to Measure Volatiles from Radiation Curable Acrylate Monomers, Oligomer, and Blends and Thin Coatings Made from Them, will let suppliers list emissions information on material safety data sheets (MSDS). According to Robin E. Wright, member of D01.21 subcommittee responsible for this ASTM International standard, "ASTM D7767 provides the necessary specifications to repeatably and reproducibly measure volatiles from...raw materials."

December 19, 2011 To proactively address potential toy safety issues, ASTM International Committee F15 on Consumer Products has approved revisions to ASTM F963, Consumer Safety Specification for Toy Safety. Standard includes guidelines and test methods to prevent injuries from choking, sharp edges, and other potential hazards. Changes made include revisions to section on heavy metals, introduction of compositing procedures, and new safety requirements and technical guidance for bath toy projections and acoustics.

Secretary Bryson's remarks reflect goals for the Office of Manufacturing Policy that will hopefully become reality.
