ASTM Standards help determine impurities in PTA.

December 11, 2013 Purified terephthalic acid, commonly known as PTA, is a major raw material for polymer and plastic manufacture used in making polyester fiber, resin, and film. Four new ASTM International standards will be used to determine the presence of the impurities 4-Caraboxybenzaldehyde and p-Toluic Acid in PTA. These newly approved standards will be used to set specifications and as internal quality control tools for both users and manufacturers.

Plues previously led Cephalon's federal government affairs efforts and prior to that position, directed state and federal advocacy initiatives for Wyeth Pharmaceuticals.

December 10, 2013 In response to pace of change over past 6 years regarding laboratory informatics, scope of ASTM E1578, Guide for Laboratory Informatics, has been broadened to include primary tools in today's laboratory informatics area. Additional terms related to laboratory informatics are defined, and new sections, including one on lean concepts and lab informatics, have been added. Previous title of this document was Guide for Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).
ASTM Committee is developing proposed REE standard.

December 10, 2013 Proposed standard ASTM WK44003, Test Method for Identification and Quantification of Rare Earth Elements (REEs) in Rare Earth Materials (REMs) by X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometry, is under development by Subcommittee F40.04 on REMs. According to F40 chairman Taco van der Maten, testing to this proposed standard will allow for quality statement for REEs and REMs so users know what they are buying. Standard will also provide for sustainable long-term supply of stable quality REEs.
NEMA publishes American National Standards for insulators.

December 9, 2013 ANSI/NEMA C29.2A covers distribution suspension-type insulators 4.25–8 in. in diameter, made of wet-process porcelain or of toughened glass, and used in the distribution of electrical energy. ANSI/NEMA C29.2B covers transmission suspension-type insulators 9 in. in diameter and larger, made of wet-process porcelain or of toughened glass, and used in the transmission of electrical energy. Proposed Standard addresses fire conditions due to eaves.

December 9, 2013 ASTM WK37414, Test Method for Flammability and Resistance of Eaves and Horizontal Projections to Fire Penetration, is being developed by Subcommittee E05.14 on External Fire Exposures. Standard will cover measurement of relative fire characteristics of exposed underside of both open and closed projections, such as horizontal soffits and extended open roof eaves, floor projections, and exposed under-floor areas to direct flame impingement from simulated fire originating outside building.
Road and Paving Standard addresses asphalt recovery.

December 9, 2013 ASTM WK40799, Practice for Recovery of Asphalt from Solution Using Toluene and the Rotary Evaporator, will be used for testing asphalt used in common pavements. Proposed standard will provide laboratories with instructions to extract liquid asphalt bitumen from asphalt-aggregate mixture using toluene and rotary evaporator. After liquid asphalt has been recovered, its properties can be measured to understand the performance of in-place pavement.

December 6, 2013 Developed by Energy Department's National Renewable Energy Laboratory, NREL Electric Calcium Test (e-Ca) uses unique design elements to measure corrosion from water. Resulting ability to detect infinitesimally small amounts of moisture promotes assurance that barrier films will last. Optimized for sensitivity, e-Ca method specifically uses test cards with calcium metal traces for detection of down to 10-7 g of water per square meter per day.

Devoted to strengthening scientific integrity in government, Grifo has many years of experience in scientific research, academia, and science policy.
NEMA publishes dimming ballast energy performance standard.

December 6, 2013 NEMA has published NEMA BL 3-2013 Dimming Ballast Energy Performance. This standard provides methodology for applying existing test methods for program start ballasts to fluorescent dimming ballasts. It also provides method to calculate ballast luminous efficiency for fluorescent dimming ballasts. In addition, BL 3 combines new 2014 DOE standard for programmed start ballasts with lamp compatibility aspects of NEMA LL 9-2011 Dimming of T8 Fluorescent Lighting Systems document.
NEMA anticipates favorable DOE ruling for electric motors.

December 6, 2013 Department of Energy proposed new rule to increase energy efficiency for electric motors. According to DOE, rule could save consumers up to $23 billion and cut emissions of carbon dioxide from electric motors by 400 million metric tons over 30-year span. Efficiency standards proposed in notice of proposed rulemaking balance tradeoff of maximum feasible efficiency requirements against challenges of manufacturing high-performance motors across numerous product classes and hundreds of design types.

December 6, 2013 According to IPC's North American PCB Statistical Program, total North American PCB shipments increased 3.6% in October 2013 from October 2012. Year-to-date shipment growth is still negative compared to same period in 2012, but is improving and reached -2.9 in October. PCB bookings increased 7.0% year over year, an improvement that brought year-to-date growth into positive territory at 0.1%. Compared to September 2013, PCB shipments in October were down 6.6% and bookings were down 4.0%.

December 6, 2013 Papers are invited for symposium on Advances in Gypsum Technologies and Building Systems, which will be held May 21, 2015 in Anaheim, CA to review innovations over past 25 years for gypsum products, systems, testing, and related building applications.
