February 3, 2012 Richard Pops, Chairman and CEO of Alkermes plc, testified on behalf of BIO before House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health during hearing entitled, "Reauthorization of PDUFA: What It Means for Jobs, Innovation and Patients." Pops stressed need for reauthorization of Prescription Drug User Fee Act and enactment of enhancements recommended in PDUFA V agreement, which will improve drug development and review process. Modifications can also provide earlier access to breakthrough therapies.
North American Robotics Industry breaks records in 2011.

February 3, 2012 According to statistics from RIA, North American robotics companies sold more robots in 2011 than ever before. Total of 19,337 robots, which were valued at $1.17 billion and sold to companies in North America in 2011, beat previous record of 18,228 robots in 2005. When sales by North American robot suppliers to companies outside North America are included, total is 22,126 robots valued at $1.35 billion. Compared to 2010, North American orders were up 47% in units and 38% in dollars.

February 2, 2012 Papers are invited for Building Walls Subject to Water Intrusion and Accumulation: Lessons from the Past and Recommendations for the Future. Contributions should address topics related to understanding scope and nature of problems as well as improving performance of building wall assemblies. Preliminary abstract is due by April 16, 2012 and must include definition of objective and approach of work discussed that points out new material and presents sufficient details regarding results.

February 2, 2012 John Brault, a biomechanics consultant at Semper Scientific in Mission Viejo, CA, has been named chairman of ASTM International Committee F13 on Pedestrian/Walkway Safety and Footwear. Brault specializes in forensic biomechanics related to injuries from collisions or falls and research associated with tribometer validation, walkway safety, and footwear. In addition to his consultant work, he is an adjunct assistant professor at the University of Southern California.

February 2, 2012 According to Jan 27 GDP Report by Department of Commerce, nonresidential fixed investment increased 1.7% in fourth quarter of 2011 following revised 15.7% increase in previous quarter. Nonresidential fixed investment in structures fell 7.2% after increasing 14.4% in third quarter, while nonresidential fixed investment in equipment and software was up 5.2% in fourth quarter following 16.2% increase in third quarter. In addition, residential fixed investment jumped 10.9% in fourth quarter.
EPRI to develop transmission line insulator inspection robot.

February 2, 2012 EPRI initiated development of an Insulator Crawler with integrated camera and EPRI prototype live working NCI Tool, which assesses integrity of polymer insulators as they are installed. Although there is a long way to go, project is revealing that use of robotics has significant advantages. Robot will enable implementation of emerging contact insulator inspection technologies at 345 kV and above, and will increase safety by enabling personnel to be removed from energized situations.

February 2, 2012 EPRI has a research effort aimed at fully understanding the potential and limitations of portable electronic device technology in utility workspace and impact these devices may have on workforce, efficiency, and how to adapt work processes to fully take advantage of these devices. Some apps in development at EPRI include iCV contact voltage detector, iPQ power quality analyzer, data visualization, phasing tool for distribution lines, and lift truck application.

February 2, 2012 IEEE expanded its Shibboleth® coverage by joining CERNET federation of China, which is part of CARSI Project, an inter-institutional authentication and authorization project. Shibboleth is standards-based, open source software that enables Web single sign-on across or within organizational boundaries. IEEE's partnership in CERNET federation means that institutional users of IEEE Xplore® Digital Library can enjoy single sign-on access to subscribed electronic resources even if they are off campus.
EPA Provides $9.8 Million to clean up beaches across USA.

February 2, 2012 U.S. EPA grants to 38 states, territories, and tribes will go towards protecting health of swimmers at beaches. Also, agency launched improved website, BEACON, for beach advisories and closings for 6,000+ U.S. beaches. Website is updated as frequently as every 2 hr and gives visitors access to mapped location data from beaches and water monitoring stations, monitoring results for pollutants such as bacteria and algae, and reports combining notifications and water quality monitoring data.

IPC releases PCB industry results for December 2011.

February 2, 2012 According to North American PCB Statistical Program, rigid PCB shipments were down 3.6% and bookings were up 0.1% in December 2011 from December 2010. Book-to-bill ratio reached parity at 1.00. Flexible circuit shipments in December 2011 were down 19.8% and bookings decreased 27.7% compared to December 2010. Flexible circuit book-to-bill ratio grew to 1.03. For rigid PCB and flexible circuits combined, industry shipments decreased 5.1% from December 2010, as orders booked decreased 2.8%.

EMS Wage Rate, Salary Study reveals cautious upturn.

February 2, 2012 Findings of IPC Wage Rate and Salary Study for the North American EMS Industry 2010-2011 reflect current slow economic recovery since end of recession in June 2009. While unemployment rate for December 2011 stood at 8.5%, salary increases for hourly, salaried, and management positions in 2011 respectively averaged 2.5%, 2.3%, and 2.1%. Report also finds direct relationship between employee satisfaction and flexible time and personal time off policies.
