NTSB releases bus and truck safety forum video. National Transportation Safety Board

NTSB has released a short introductory video highlighting the issues that will be discussed during the public forum on bus and truck safety. Scheduled for May 10-11, forum will review progress that has been made in truck and bus safety in the last decade, and what needs to be done to improve it. It will focus on issues such as carrier oversight, truck and bus operations, driver safety and health, and vehicle safety technologies.

According to 2010/2011 U.S. Industry Statistical Review and Forecast, demand for residential windows rebounded in 2010 after 4 years of decline, particularly in new construction market. Remodeling and replacement of residential skylights experienced similar growth, while new construction segment of residential skylight market declined from 2009 to 2010. Residential door market showed increases in demand from 2009 to 2010, while demand for non-residential doors continued to decline in 2010.

NEMA, on behalf of its Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment/Systems product section, lent support to HR 1685, Electric Drive Vehicle Deployment Act of 2011. Introduced by Reps Judy Biggert, Edward J. Markey, Jerry McNerney, and Anna Eshoo, HR 1685 implements various incentives and programs to foster adoption of electric vehicles and EV infrastructure. HR 1685 extends tax credit through 2014 for purchase and installation of electric vehicle charging infrastructure and expands credit from 30% to 50%.

Developed by NEMA's Molded Case Circuit Breakers Product Group, ABP 2-2011 Recommendations on AFCI/Home Electrical Product Compatibility provides designers of home electrical products (HEPs) with information on operating parameters of arc-fault circuit interrupters, with goal of avoiding unwanted tripping of AFCI. ABP 2 offers guidance for designing HEPs operating at 120 Vac and rated at 20 A or less, and discusses ground-fault current, peak currents, and high frequency emissions.

U.S. EPA and U.S. Justice Department announced settlement with Rocky Mountain Pipeline System, LLC; Western Convenience Stores, Inc.; and Offen Petroleum, Inc. to resolve claims that they illegally mixed and distributed more than 1 million gal of gasoline that did not meet Clean Air Act emissions and fuel quality requirements. Companies listed above will pay $2.5 million civil penalty and conduct environmental project designed to offset harm caused by quality deviation.

ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 135-2010, BACnet® - A Data Communication Protocol for Building Automation and Control Networks, allows building equipment and systems manufactured by different companies to work together. This open, consensus-developed standard for building controls industry contains 19 addenda approved since 2008 version was published. Specifically, content includes wireless communications; XML vocabulary, character encoding, and network security definition.

"Accreditation - Supporting the Needs of Regulators," theme recognizes accreditation's role in supporting regulatory framework and helping regulators at federal, state, and local levels determine compliance of products, services, and personnel with legal and regulatory requirements. Papers should not exceed 2,000 words.

According to statistics released by RIA, North American robotics companies enjoyed their best opening quarter since 2007. A total of 4,021 robots valued at $263.5 million were ordered by North American manufacturing companies through March, an increase of 31% in units and 27% in dollars. Unit growth in automotive industry jumped 64%, while non-automotive orders increased just 3% percent overall. Metals sector jumped 73% and life sciences/pharmaceutical/biomedical gained 61%.

ASTM International is inviting paper submissions for symposium on Geopolymer Binder Systems, to be held June 26, 2012 in San Diego, CA. Requested topics include manufacturing of geopolymers and related binders as well as use of geopolymers in construction and concrete. Sustainability and quality assurance, as well as alkali activation of fly ash and other waste materials, are also topics that will be considered. Interested participants must submit 250-300 word abstract by June 27, 2011.

Emanuel Horowitz, Ph.D., retired professor of materials science and engineering of Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD, was honored with 2011 William T. Cavanaugh Memorial Award for his leadership in promoting national and international standards for medical and surgical implants and materials. Horowitz has contributed to voluntary standards development for close to 60 years in committees in ASTM International and ISO.

According to NTSB, European Aviation Safety Agency should require Eurocopter to revise its aircraft maintenance manual for all helicopters equipped with part number 355A11-0020 and/or 355A11-0030 main rotor blades to include, as part of the daily flight-related check, specific visual inspections of trailing edge of blades, upper and lower skin surfaces for cracks and surface deterioration/disfiguration.

Made to FAA, safety recommendation A-11-35 requires Eurocopter to revise aircraft maintenance manual for helicopters equipped with part No. 355A11-0020/-0030 main rotor blades. Daily flight-related check must include visual inspections of trailing edge of blades and upper/lower skin surfaces for cracks and surface deterioration/disfiguration. Also, A-11-36 requires operators of such Eurocopter helicopters to revise their maintenance manuals to include coinciding daily visual inspections.
