December 17, 2013 Director of the federal Advanced Manufacturing National Program Office has been elected to lead SME as it continues its new strategic direction and brand position. Michael F. Molnar, FSME, CMfgE, PE, was sworn in as the 2014 president of the 81-year-old organization dedicated to advancing manufacturing and attracting future generations. Successful applicants demonstrate creativity, innovation, community engagement, and leadership.
BIO says EPA's proposal will increase greenhouse gas emissions.

December 17, 2013 EPA's 2014 proposed rule for the Renewable Fuel Standard, which would for the first time cut biofuel use, will require using more petroleum and increase emissions of greenhouse gases. BIO utilized GREET1.2013 model to estimate changes in petroleum demand and associated CO2 equivalent emissions from both 2013 and statutory RFS levels for 2014. According to estimates, EPA proposal will result in an increase of more than 23 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions.
ASTM Standard helps assure implantable medical device safety.

December 17, 2013 ASTM WK19883, Test Method for Conducting and Evaluating Galvanic Corrosion Tests of Medical Implant Devices, is being developed by Subcommittee F04.15 on Material Test Methods. Cardiovascular, orthopedic, neurovascular, and dental implants will be evaluated using this standard. Making sure these devices do not experience galvanic corrosion helps assure they are biocompatible and can function as intended in the human body without degrading or eliciting an unwanted response.

December 16, 2013 ASTM International standard will provide qualitative means to determine potential effect of plasticizers contained within PVC floor covering materials on specific adhesive. ASTM D7888, Practice for Evaluating Adhesive and the Effects of Plasticizer Found Within Polyvinylchloride-Backed Floor Coverings, was developed by Subcommittee D14.10 on Working Properties, part of ASTM International Committee D14 on Adhesives. Standard focuses specifically on issues related to plasticizer migration.

Porterfield is membership secretary of both D19 and Committee C26 on Nuclear Fuel Cycle, where he also chairs Subcommittee C26.01 on Editorial and Terminology. A member of ASTM International since 1996, Porterfieldáhas also received C26 Harlan J. Anderson Award and D19 Max Hecht Award.
North American Machine Vision Sales soar in third quarter.

December 12, 2013 According to AIA statistics, total machine vision sales in North America climbed 23% compared to third quarter of 2012. Machine vision systems category, which includes application specific machine vision systems and smart cameras, continued driving overall growth with 25% increase over third quarter 2012, while sales of machine vision components grew 10% over third quarter of last year. Cameras, lighting, and imaging boards all increased, while optics and software decreased mildly.

December 12, 2013 BIO made it know that provisions within H.R. 3309á"would erect unreasonable barriers to access justice for innovators" and cited in particular "small start-ups that must be able to defend their businesses against patent infringement in a timely and cost-effective manner, and without needless and numerous procedural hurdles or other obstacles.” Bio also called provisions "overly broad" and pointed out they would result in "unintended and unknowable consequences" for innovators.

December 12, 2013 Public Utilities Commission of Ohio adopted improved interconnection procedures that help facilitateáconnection ofásmall renewable energy systems to distribution grid. IREC participated in Ohio and Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) rulemaking processes for several months in 2012, and Ohio commission's order adoptedáseveral of IREC's key recommendations and improved upon existing rules. Ohio is first state to update its rules since FERC's approval of SGIP modifications.

December 12, 2013 Environmental Protection Agency has proposed to decrease use of advanced biofuels in transportation in 2014, reversing growth path intended in RFS. BIO recently testified at EPA's Public Hearing for the 2014 Standard for the Renewable Fuel Standard Program, telling agency that commercial development of advanced and cellulosic biofuels, as well as other biotechnology applications, could come to a halt if the recently released proposal becomes policy.
