March 12, 2012 Annual forecast, released by FAA, projects that airline passenger travel will nearly double within next 20 years. Forecast also underscores need to continue moving forward with implementation of FAA's Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen) to accommodate such growth. According to U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood, "investment in NextGen is the key to getting passengers and cargo to their destinations more safely, faster, and with less impact on the environment."
NAM supports legislature that defends against unfair subsidies.

March 12, 2012 NAM VP of International Economic Affairs, Frank Vargo, issued statement urging members of House to support H.R. 4105 to eliminate trade-distorting subsidies. In order to compete against global competition, manufacturers in U.S. need fair and level playing field. H.R. 4105 will allow Department of Commerce to continue to apply countervailing duties to non-market economies, such as China. If Congress fails to act quickly, thousands of manufacturers will be negatively impacted.

CMA is made up of 200+ associations from every sector of manufacturing and provides resources to members to broaden reach of NAM advocacy efforts. Additional CMA officers for 2012 were announced, including 1st Vice Chairman Donna Harman, 2nd Vice Chairman Ernie Rosenberg, and Immediate Past Chairman Bob Weidner.

March 12, 2012 Although global economic growth and electronics industry growth slowed in fourth quarter of 2011, signs that recovery is resuming in U.S. is apparent, according to IPC's quarterly report, Market Data Update. Conference Board's Leading Economic Index® has remained flat for a year, but has been inching up since last October, while U.S. Purchasing Managers' Index is also in positive territory and trending upward. In addition, IPC's PCB book-to-bill ratio edged up to 1.01, just above parity, in January.

EPA Requests Comments on U.S. Greenhouse Gas Inventory.

March 9, 2012 U.S. EPA seeks public comment on annual "Inventory of U.S. Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Sinks: 1990-2010" draft report, which serves as USA's official estimate of total national greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Draft report, which will be open for public comment for 30 days, shows that overall GHG emissions increased by 3.3% in 2010 compared to previous year. Total emissions from GHGs were ~6,866 million metric tons of CO2 equivalent. Overall, emissions have grown 11% from 1990 to 2010.

March 9, 2012 American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) has revised ASAE S268.5, Design, Layout, Construction, and Maintenance of Terrace Systems. This complete rewrite incorporates new procedures for spacing terraces based on erosion prediction technology, new tillage methods, and construction techniques. Second revision - ASAE S442.1, Water and Sediment Control Basins - contains alterations that ensure compatibility and continuity with changes in S268.5.

March 9, 2012 In conjunction with IndustryWeek, MESA released findings of joint research study in MESA White Paper #40 Performance Improvement and Metrics Practices. Findings show manufacturers and producers who improved their profits significantly also use metrics consistently and align corporate objectives with operational metrics. Also, less than 40% of all respondents see predictive analytics as important or most critical, compared to over 85% who see actual values as important or most critical.

It also addresses selection of monitoring tools and frequency of security monitoring.

March 9, 2012 Salim Brahimi, president and principal engineer at IBECA Technologies Corp. in Montreal, Canada, has been elected chairman of ASTM International Committee F16 on Fasteners. A member of ASTM since 1997, Brahimi works on several F16 subcommittees and is vice chairman of F16.02 on Steel Bolts, Nuts, Rivets and Washers. Brahimi is currently completing his Ph.D. at McGill University, where he also earned a bachelor's degree in metallurgical engineering and a master's in materials engineering.

March 9, 2012 FAA has asked for public input on 6 unmanned aircraft system test sites. Specifically, request for comment asks for input on public versus private management of sites, research activities and capabilities of test areas, requirements for test site operators, and geographic/climate factors that should influence site selection. Once pilot program is established, agency expects it will provide valuable data to help FAA safely integrate UAS into same airspace with manned airplanes.

It details state-by-state A/D industry employment, revenues, and taxes paid, as well as industry's position as number one contributor to country's positive trade balance, at net $42 billion. According to study conducted by Dr. Stephen Fuller of George Mason University, more than 1 million jobs could be lost as a result of defense budget cuts if sequestration trigger is pulled.

Additionally, she is member of Committees E47 on Biological Effects and Environmental Fate and E60 on Sustainability. Schools attended include Manhattan College and Frostburg State University.
