Nonresidential Construction Spending slips in January.

March 14, 2012 According to March 1 report by U.S. Commerce Department, total nonresidential construction spending decreased 0.8% in January to $566.4 billion. However, total nonresidential construction spending was up 7.9% from January 2011. Private nonresidential construction spending was down 1.5% for the month, but was 16.6% higher than one year ago. In addition, public nonresidential construction spending was down 0.1% for January, but was up 0.4% from same time last year.

March 13, 2012 According to figures released by AIA, sales of machine vision components and systems in North America climbed 5% in 2011 to nearly $1.9 billion. Paul Kellett, AIA Director of Market Analysis, noted that sales of machine vision components, including smart cameras, grew 13%, while application-specific systems grew 2%. As reflection of overall economic growth beginning to slow down, Kellett noted that first half of year was stronger than second half.

NREL and UCLA certify record for polymer solar cell efficiency.

March 13, 2012 Scientists boosted significance of tandem polymer solar cells by successfully testing cells with low-bandgap polymers that achieved certified conversion efficiencies of 8.62 ±0.3% with respect to standard terrestrial reporting conditions. According to researchers at NREL and UCLA, that is the highest measured efficiency for a polymer solar cell. UCLA recently improved on this by incorporating IR-absorbing polymer from Sumitomo Chemical. NREL measured power conversion efficiency at 10.6 ±0.3%.

March 12, 2012 BIO applauded House on its passage, by vote of 390-23, of H.R. 3606, Jumpstart Our Business Startups (JOBS) Act, which contains provisions that would make pathway to capital formation more attainable for small biotech companies. In his statement, BIO President and CEO Jim Greenwood said that "BIO supports these reforms" and called them "especially important" to biotech companies. Greenwood also said reforms would make capital formation easier for small biotechs.

March 12, 2012 Annual forecast, released by FAA, projects that airline passenger travel will nearly double within next 20 years. Forecast also underscores need to continue moving forward with implementation of FAA's Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen) to accommodate such growth. According to U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood, "investment in NextGen is the key to getting passengers and cargo to their destinations more safely, faster, and with less impact on the environment."

March 12, 2012 NAM VP of International Economic Affairs, Frank Vargo, issued statement urging members of House to support H.R. 4105 to eliminate trade-distorting subsidies. In order to compete against global competition, manufacturers in U.S. need fair and level playing field. H.R. 4105 will allow Department of Commerce to continue to apply countervailing duties to non-market economies, such as China. If Congress fails to act quickly, thousands of manufacturers will be negatively impacted.
