February 23, 2012 NEMA welcomed introduction of Smart Energy Act (HR 4017) as step toward reducing energy consumption in U.S. and moving toward energy independence. According to NEMA President and CEO Evan R. Gaddis, bipartisan legislation promotes energy efficiency by making federal government smarter consumer of energy and encouraging energy efficiency upgrades in buildings throughout U.S. Gaddis also noted related opportunities, such as operating cost reduction and job creation.

February 23, 2012 In July 2011, team of external auditors from NSF International Strategic Registrations visited NREL to conduct comprehensive and rigorous independent assessment of policies, procedures, tools, roles, and responsibilities used to manage environment, safety, and quality at NREL. NREL received 3 significant certifications, which include ISO 14001:2004 (environment); ISO 9001:2008 (quality); and OHSAS 18001 (health and safety).
Coal/Coke Standard to allow chlorine determination via XRF.

February 23, 2012 Proposed standard ASTM WK34943, Test Method for Chlorine in Coal and Coke by XRF, will allow for rapid and repeatable determination of chlorine in coal and coke via X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopy. As member of subcommittee responsible for this standard, Colin Campbell stated that halides present in coal "is of environmental concern," citing that chlorine will eventually be emitted as acid gases. He also noted concern for corrosion damage from condensation of gases.

NAM Comments on U.S.-South Korea FTA entry into force.

February 23, 2012 NAM's Stephen Jacobs was pleased that U.S.-Korea free trade agreement will take effect on March 15, 2012. While noting that almost 80% of U.S. exports of industrial products to Korea will become duty-free, Jacobs pointed out "Korea offers U.S. manufacturers growing opportunity for exports within a dynamic and expanding market." Jacobs also called Korea "a crucial export destination," citing number of small and medium-sized companies that already export goods there.

February 23, 2012 According to PTDA Business Index, 4Q2011 was the seventh consecutive quarter for business growth among PTDA members, with reading of 67.3. Compared with reading of 68.1 for 3Q2011, fourth-quarter results indicate power transmission/motion control industry is expanding at a slightly slower pace than before. Both distributors and manufacturers saw growth in 4Q11, and distributors outpaced manufacturers for first quarter in survey's history.

PPIF v2.3 now includes 4 optional fields that enable manufacturers to indicate whether product is Green, classifications of eco-friendly products, independent organization or agency providing rating or certification, and Green validation of product.

February 23, 2012 NIST has published, for public comment, draft update to Computer Security Incident Handling Guide (NIST Special Publication 800-61, Revision 2), which is intended for organizations managing their responses to incidents such as hacking attacks. Reflecting changes in threats and incidents, revision will help established and newly formed teams to create incident response policy and plan. NIST requests comments by March 16, 2012.
NIST Seeks EHR System Manufacturers to aid in usability testing.

February 23, 2012 NIST is seeking manufacturers of electronic health record (EHR) systems to participate in research effort aimed towards developing methods for assessing usability of health information systems. System manufacturers will provide EHR systems for use in lab-based usability testing, and NIST will provide secure computing environment to safeguard software and equipment during course of research. Results of each EHR system will be reported to its manufacturer and used to support NIST research.
NTSB announces Attentive Driving forum.

February 23, 2012 On March 27, 2012, NTSB will hold 1-day forum titled, Attentive Driving: Countermeasures for Distraction. Forum will look at broad range of distractions that compete for driver's attention, characterize various distracted driver laws, and discuss differences in how states have adopted restrictions. It will also explore national and state education campaigns and consider effectiveness of active safety technology currently being deployed in vehicles.
Air Toxic Emissions Standards apply to PVC production facilities.

February 22, 2012 With aim of improving air quality and protecting people's health in surrounding communities, U.S. EPA issued strong final standards requiring facilities that produce polyvinyl chloride and copolymers (PVC) to reduce harmful air emissions. Final standards are based on currently available technologies and will reduce emissions of air toxics, such as dioxin and vinyl chloride. Facilities, which can choose most practical control technology/technique, will also have to monitor emissions.

February 22, 2012 ASTM International Committee E21 on Space Simulation and Applications of Space Technology is requesting input on upcoming revisions for ASTM F21 Test Method for Hydrophobic Surface Films by the Atomizer Test, and ASTM F22, Test Method for Hydrophobic Surface Films by the Water-Break Test. While not quantitative, these methods are used to verify that surfaces are sufficiently free of hydrophobic contaminants to proceed to application of primer, plating, adhesives, or conversion coatings.
