ASABE to Revise crop terminology and definition standard.

March 9, 2012 American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) has initiated project to revise standard ASAE S327.3, Terminology and Definitions for Application of Crop, or Forestry Production and Protection Agents. Specifically, definitions for spray drift and air assist sprayer, or air boom, will be revised for clarification.

MESA Releases White Paper "Performance Improvement and Metrics Practices.".

March 9, 2012 In conjunction with IndustryWeek, MESA released findings of joint research study in MESA White Paper #40 Performance Improvement and Metrics Practices. Findings show manufacturers and producers who improved their profits significantly also use metrics consistently and align corporate objectives with operational metrics. Also, less than 40% of all respondents see predictive analytics as important or most critical, compared to over 85% who see actual values as important or most critical.

March 9, 2012 Guidelines for Securing Wireless Local Area Networks, SP 800-153, recommends that valuable information be protected by integrating security into every step of system development process - from initiation to disposal. Guide provides recommendations to improve security on such topics as standardizing WLAN security configurations, including configuration design, implementation, evaluation, and maintenance. It also addresses selection of monitoring tools and frequency of security monitoring.
ASTM Fasteners Committee elects Salim Brahimi as Chairman.

March 9, 2012 Salim Brahimi, president and principal engineer at IBECA Technologies Corp. in Montreal, Canada, has been elected chairman of ASTM International Committee F16 on Fasteners. A member of ASTM since 1997, Brahimi works on several F16 subcommittees and is vice chairman of F16.02 on Steel Bolts, Nuts, Rivets and Washers. Brahimi is currently completing his Ph.D. at McGill University, where he also earned a bachelor's degree in metallurgical engineering and a master's in materials engineering.

FAA seeks public input on UAS test site selection.

March 9, 2012 FAA has asked for public input on 6 unmanned aircraft system test sites. Specifically, request for comment asks for input on public versus private management of sites, research activities and capabilities of test areas, requirements for test site operators, and geographic/climate factors that should influence site selection. Once pilot program is established, agency expects it will provide valuable data to help FAA safely integrate UAS into same airspace with manned airplanes.
AIA Report addresses impact of A/D industry on U.S. economy.

It details state-by-state A/D industry employment, revenues, and taxes paid, as well as industry's position as number one contributor to country's positive trade balance, at net $42 billion. According to study conducted by Dr. Stephen Fuller of George Mason University, more than 1 million jobs could be lost as a result of defense budget cuts if sequestration trigger is pulled.

ASTM International member since 2003, Stanton also chairs Subcommittee D12.32 on Nomenclature and Definitions. Additionally, she is member of Committees E47 on Biological Effects and Environmental Fate and E60 on Sustainability. Schools attended include Manhattan College and Frostburg State University.

March 8, 2012 NIST Framework and Roadmap for Smart Grid Interoperability Standards, Release 2.0 lays out plan for transforming nation's aging electric power system into interoperable Smart Grid. Final 2.0 Framework adds 22 standards, specifications, and guidelines to 75 standards NIST recommended in 1.0 version. Some additions include roles of Smart Grid Interoperability Panel, Risk Management Framework ensuring cybersecurity for Smart Grid, and framework for testing conformity of devices.
