EPA to work with ports to improve environmental performance.

April 15, 2014 EPA hosted "Advancing Sustainable Ports" summit to kickoff initiative to recognize ports that take action to improve environmental performance, including improving local air quality, reducing carbon emissions, and addressing environmental justice issues. Program will also work with port authorities to develop emission measurement tools to better understand energy use and environmental impact. In addition, EPA will award $4.2 million in grant funding for clean diesel projects at 6 U.S. ports.

NTSB Recommendations address tractor-trailer safety.

April 14, 2014 NTSB issued recommendations urging NHTSA to take action to improve safety of tractor-trailers. In addition to eliminating blind spots, recommendations call on NHTSA to require that newly manufactured truck-tractors and trailers be equipped with side underride protection systems, and that revisions be made to improve rear underride guard standards. NTSB also recommends that NHTSA add information on trailer model year and vehicle identification numbers to its national database of fatal crashes.

April 14, 2014 In partnership with NREL, Naval Facilities Engineering Command demonstrated 8 energy efficient technologies at installations in Hawaii and Guam. Plug load control technology, which cuts power to devices plugged into outlets when they are not in use, were installed in 30 residences and 1 office building. Considerable savings were also achieved with residential retrofits, such as more efficient hot water heaters and air conditioners coupled with programmable thermostats and low-flow shower heads.

Students head to Washington for largest rocket contest.

April 14, 2014 Hundreds of middle and high school students from across the country will advance to the national finals of the Team America Rocketry Challenge. On May 10, TARC’s top 100 teams will travel to Great Meadow in The Plains, VA, outside of Washington, DC, to launch against fellow student rocketeers in the final fly-off. Teams must design and build a model rocket that can travel to exactly 825 ft and back within 48-50 sec while carrying 2 raw eggs that must return safely to ground undamaged.

April 11, 2014 U.S. EPA and DOE are honoring 127 organizations for their commitment to protecting the environment through superior energy efficiency. Recipients of the 2014 Energy Star Partner of the Year Award include Des Moines Public School District; KB Home; Meritage Homes Corporation; PepsiCo., Inc.; Sears Holdings Corporation; and Samsung. Winners were selected from 16,000 Energy Star partners, including manufacturers, retailers, public schools, hospitals, real estate companies, and home builders.
NEMA commends extension of 179D tax deduction.

April 11, 2014 NEMA commended Senate Finance Committee on its approval of a 2-year extension of the Energy Efficient Commercial Buildings Tax Deduction, also known as Section 179D, as part of the Expiring Provisions Improvement Reform and Efficiency Act. Provision allows taxpayer to take a deduction equal to commercial building energy-efficiency expenditures made by taxpayer as part of building’s interior lighting systems, heating, cooling, ventilation, and hot water systems, or building envelope.

April 10, 2014 U.S. EPA is awarding $12.7 million in grants to help small drinking water and wastewater systems – those serving fewer than 10,000 people – and private well owners. More than 97% of nation’s 157,000 public water systems serve fewer than 10,000 people. Grantees will provide training and technical assistance to improve small system operations and management practices, promote system sustainability, and support EPA’s mission to protect public health and the environment.
