Soaps/Detergents Committee elects Kathleen Stanton as chairman.

March 8, 2012 American Cleaning Institute (ACI) technical and regulatory affairs director Kathleen Stanton has been elected chairman of ASTM International Committee D12 on Soaps and Other Detergents. ASTM International member since 2003, Stanton also chairs Subcommittee D12.32 on Nomenclature and Definitions. Additionally, she is member of Committees E47 on Biological Effects and Environmental Fate and E60 on Sustainability. Schools attended include Manhattan College and Frostburg State University.
IPC APEX Expo experiences attendance surge in San Diego.

March 8, 2012 With 4,915 conference and exhibit hall attendees, IPC APEX EXPO® in San Diego, CA reported 26% increase in attendance over 2011. IPC reported that 407 exhibitors participated in said event, resulting in 8,963 total visitors. With best attendance in over 4 years, IPC APEX EXPO focused on printed board and electronics manufacturing industries and featured first hand soldering contest, which culminated in Grand Championship competition.
NIST releases final Smart Grid Framework 2.0 document.

March 8, 2012 NIST Framework and Roadmap for Smart Grid Interoperability Standards, Release 2.0 lays out plan for transforming nation's aging electric power system into interoperable Smart Grid. Final 2.0 Framework adds 22 standards, specifications, and guidelines to 75 standards NIST recommended in 1.0 version. Some additions include roles of Smart Grid Interoperability Panel, Risk Management Framework ensuring cybersecurity for Smart Grid, and framework for testing conformity of devices.

March 8, 2012 Released by NIST, Security and Privacy Controls for Federal Information Systems and Organizations, Special Publication (SP) 800-53, Revision 4, adds guidance for combating new information security threats and incorporates privacy controls to framework that federal agencies use to protect their information and information systems. This Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA) publication also adds privacy appendix that provides privacy controls and associated implementation guidance.

March 8, 2012 ASTM International Committee E13 on Molecular Spectroscopy and Separation Science invites interested parties to join ongoing revision of ASTM E1578, Guide for Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS). James B. Powers Jr., chair of E13.15, said "Prospective LIMS/informatics users will be able to utilize the updated ASTM E1578 to understand terminology, configurations, features, design, benefits and costs" as well as understand purpose and functions of LIMS/informatics.

March 7, 2012 Federal agencies, led by Council on Environmental Quality and U.S. EPA, released environmental justice strategies, implementation plans, and progress reports, outlining steps agencies will take to protect communities facing greater health and environmental risks. These strategies represent significant step forward in Administration's commitment to integrating environmental justice into federal decision-making and programs in areas such as transportation, labor, health services, and housing.

March 7, 2012 Standards experts from ASTM International testified February 29 before committee of U.S. Congress during review of effectiveness of U.S. standards system. Representing ASTM on witnesses panel, James L. Seay described benefits of public and private collaboration in development of voluntary consensus standards. He also recommended that countries/regions strive to embrace international standards criteria established by WTO, and recognize flexibility to chose from international standards portfolio.
NTSB Chairman Supports National Sleep Awareness Week.

March 7, 2012 Supporting National Sleep Awareness Week (March 5-9), NTSB Chairman Deborah A.P. Hersman urged transportation operators to "plan for adequate sleep on Sunday night and every other night to safeguard the travelling public." Hersman also commented on National Sleep Foundation's 2012 Sleep in America poll, in which transportation professionals were asked about their sleep habits. "Inadequate sleep puts lives at risk," said Hersman, "we see this over and over in our accident investigations."

March 7, 2012 BIO thanked Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich) and co-sponsors for introducing legislation that would allow more bio-manufacturing companies to participate in Farm Bill programs. According to BIO's report, "Biobased Chemicals and Products: A New Driver for Green Jobs," global sustainable chemical industry will grow to $1 trillion in next 10 years. If U.S. companies can capture 19% of this market, report projects that U.S. will create about 237,000 direct U.S. jobs in sustainable chemicals sector.

EPA Funding helps small drinking water and wastewater systems.

March 6, 2012 U.S. EPA announced that it will provide up to $15 million in funding to small drinking and wastewater systems, defined as systems that serve fewer than 10,000 people, and private well owners. Funding will help provide water system staff with training and tools to enhance system operations and management practices, and support EPA's continuing efforts to protect public health, restore watersheds, and promote sustainability in small communities.

Also, panels will consider research that could contribute to reducing distracted driving accidents.

March 6, 2012 NEMA SSL 4 Retrofit Lamps: Minimum Performance Requirements applies to integral Light Emitting Diode (LED) lamps, which are defined as lamp with LEDs, integrated LED driver, and base that meets appropriate American National Standards (ANSs) and connects to branch circuit via lampholder/socket that also meets appropriate ANSs. Criteria applies to integral LED lamps of non-standard form as well as those intended to replace standard general service incandescent, decorative, and reflector lamps.
