March 21, 2012 Association of Equipment Manufacturer's "Introduction to Hydraulics" course, taking place on March 27, 2012 in Milwaukee, WI, will focus on lubrication fundamentals, hydraulic fluids, and applications. This one-day course will include topics such as friction, lubrication, wear, lubricant maintenance and oil analysis, hydraulic fluid composition and function, and hydraulic applications.
Construction Unemployment dips to 17.1% in February.

March 21, 2012 Despite loss of 13,000 construction jobs in February, industry's unemployment rate dipped to 17.1%, down from 17.7% in January, according to U.S. Labor Department's March 9 employment report. Nation's construction industry has added 65,000 jobs, or 1.2% since February 2011, when unemployment rate stood at 21.8%. Both residential and nonresidential building construction sectors added 2,000 jobs in February for year over year increases of 2.3% and 1.3%, respectively.

March 21, 2012 Administrator Lisa P. Jackson and David O'Neill of the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation joined Mayor Vincent C. Gray and Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes-Norton of the District of Columbia to announce creation of The Anacostia River Revitalization Fund. The fund, which will invest $1 million in restoration activities this year, with total goal of investing $5 million over next 3 years, will be used protect and restore Anacostia River and to create national model for watershed conservation.
EPA issues 2011 fuel economy trends report.

March 21, 2012 According to EPA's annual report, "Light-Duty Automotive Technology, Carbon Dioxide Emissions, and Fuel Economy Trends: 1975 Through 2011," average fuel efficiency for new cars and light duty trucks has increased while CO2 emissions continue to decrease for seventh consecutive year. For 2010, average real world CO2 emissions from new vehicles were 394 g of CO2/mile and average fuel economy value was 22.6 mpg. EPA projects improvement in 2011 to 391 g of CO2/mile and 22.8 mpg.
NEMA's EBCI for February surges to 6 year high.

March 20, 2012 NEMA's Electroindustry Business Confidence Index for current North American conditions jumped sharply in February, rising more than 18 points to 72.5, its highest level in more than 6 years. Survey's measure of degree of change in current North American conditions rose to highest mark in almost 2 years, soaring to +0.7 in February from +0.1 in January. Meanwhile, EBCI for future North American conditions, though remaining firmly positive, retreated slightly in February.

Incandescent Lamp Shipments increased in Q4 2011.

March 19, 2012 NEMA's indexes for incandescent and CFL lamp shipments increased by 29.4% and 3.6%, respectively, during Q4 2011 compared to Q3 2011. While incandescent lamp shipments posted year-over-year gain of 41%, CFLs declined 6.6%. Calendar year comparison also showed shipments of CFLs decreased by 6.6% and that incandescent lamp shipments rose 16.4% during 2011. Incandescent lamps increased its share of combined incandescent-CFL market, with reading of 82.8%, while share of CFLs decreased to 17.2%.

March 19, 2012 NAM President and CEO urged senators to support amendment offered by Senators Cantwell (D-WA), Johnson (D-SD), Graham (R-SC), and Shelby (R-AL), which will reauthorize Export-Import Bank (Ex-Im) and increase its lending limit. To support its critical role in helping manufacturers' export to new markets and keep up with global competition, Timmons noted that Ex-Im supports near 290,000 export-related jobs and that over 85% of its transactions directly benefit small business exporters.
