EPA-Marathon Agreement includes flare controls, volume caps.

April 10, 2012 U.S. EPA and Department of Justice announced environmental agreement with Ohio-based Marathon Petroleum Company, which has already significantly reduced air pollution from all 6 of its petroleum refineries. In a first for refining industry, Marathon agreed to controls on combustion devices (flares) as well as a cap on volume of waste gas sent to its flares. When fully implemented, the agreement is expected to reduce harmful air pollution by ~5,400 tons/year.

Proposed ASTM Fences Standard focuses on privacy slat specifications.

April 9, 2012 Being developed by Subcommittee F14.40 on Chain Link Fence and Wire Accessories, proposed ASTM WK36470, Specification for Privacy Slats for Chain Link Fence, aims to provide means for increased standardization of slats inserted into chain link fences. Specific focus will be given to insert slats for specific chain link mesh sizes as well as pre-woven privacy chain slat products. Manufacturers, contractors, and other interested parties are invited to join in standards development.
ASTM Symposium to address geopolymer binder systems.

April 9, 2012 Scheduled for June 26-27, symposium on Geopolymer Binder Systems will provide opportunity for ASTM to consider whether existing cement standards provide effective framework for further exploration of new sustainable binders and reliable protection for users of these materials. Papers will be presented on manufacturing of geopolymers, alkali activation of fly ash and other waste materials, assessment of materials for use in geopolymers, and performance of geopolymers and related binders.
AEM President urges U.S. House to pass highway bill.

April 9, 2012 In response to U.S. House of Representatives passing 90-day extension of federal surface transportation programs, AEM President Dennis Slater issued statement on behalf of U.S. equipment manufacturers and I Make America campaign. Slater expressed disappointment regarding passage of time and number of extensions since last highway bill expired. "Enough is enough," said Slater, who then demanded House act immediately to pass its highway bill and move to conference with Senate.

April 9, 2012 Coltec Industries Inc. and National Steel and Shipbuilding Company (NASSCO), in first enforcement action under marine diesel engine air rules, will pay civil penalty of $280,000. Also, ~$500,000 is to be spent on environmental project aimed at reducing nitrogen oxide emissions from testing stack at Coltec's Beloit, WI facility. Coltec and NASSCO further agreed to attach required EPA engine labels to engines previously unlabeled or improperly labeled.

April 9, 2012 AMCA Standard 610-06 (R2012) - Laboratory Methods of Testing Airflow Measurement Stations for Performance Rating, was approved without significant change from 2006 version. It was reaffirmed by membership on June 24, 2011 and approved by ANS on February 3, 2012. Covering field-installed airflow measurement stations for HVAC applications, standard establishes uniform test methods for determining performance and accuracy of airflow measurement stations under varied airflow rates/conditions.
EPA proposes carbon pollution standard for new power plants.

April 9, 2012 Following 2007 Supreme Court ruling, U.S. EPA proposed first Clean Air Act standard for carbon pollution from new power plants. Proposed standard reflects ongoing trend in power sector to build cleaner plants that take advantage of American-made technologies, including new, clean-burning, efficient natural gas generation. Rule also creates path forward for new technologies to be deployed at future facilities that will allow companies to burn coal while emitting less carbon pollution.

April 6, 2012 ANSI's Board of Standards Review has approved revision ANSI/AMCA 250-2012, Laboratory Methods of Testing Jet Tunnel Fans for Performance. Standard deals with determination of those technical characteristics needed to describe all aspects of performance of jet tunnel fans. It does not cover fans designed for ducted applications nor those designed solely for air circulation. Procedures relate to laboratory conditions; measurement of performance under in-situ conditions is not included.
