NEMA publishes transformer standard.

May 7, 2014 NEMA has published NEMA TR 1-2013 Transformers, Regulators and Reactors, which applies to single-phase and polyphase power and distribution transformers. Step-voltage regulators have been added to the scope in this edition and there is now more alignment with IEEE transformer standards. NEMA TR 1 is one of the few standards on the market that lists audible sound levels for these particular transformers.

This year's J.H. "Jud" Hall Composites Manufacturing Award went to Mamidala Ramulu PhD, Boeing-Pennell professor of engineering and professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Washington. ATK Aerospace Structures received 2014 Excellence in Composites Manufacturing Award.
EPA awards $860,000 to expand use of green infrastructure.

May 7, 2014 EPA announced $860,000 to help 14 communities expand their use of green infrastructure to reduce water pollution and boost resilience to impacts of climate change. Green infrastructure decreases pollution to local waterways by treating rain where it falls and keeping polluted stormwater from entering sewer systems. Green infrastructure tools and techniques include green roofs, permeable materials, alternative designs for streets and buildings, trees, rain gardens, and rain harvesting systems.

Scheduled for June 2, 2014, Rotodynamic Pumps: Guidelines for NPSH Margin webinar instructs participants on how to calculate available NPSH, understand how insufficient NPSHA will affect pump operation, and what NPSH margin is needed to ensure longevity.

Regarding their respective types of outlet boxes (100 in.³ or less), both standards cover configurations as well as manufacturer specifications for materials, dimensions of openings, supports, cover screws, markings, and grounding provisions. OS 1 also covers corrosion protection.

Changes in this edition include alignment of definitions between all ANSI C18 standards, harmonization with IEC standards, inclusion of Li-ion polymer batteries, storage adjusted capacity, and application charge performance test.

ACR, Inc. of Wheeling, IL, received award for their efforts involving a gymnasium floor that was flooded and was able to be dried out instead of requiring total replacement. Sharp & Robbins Construction of Memphis, TN, received award for rebuilding a condominium building after a 200 sq-ft section of the brick façade fell off the side of the structure.

May 6, 2014 EPA is inviting small businesses to participate as consultants for a Small Business Advocacy Review Panel as the agency considers steps to reduce lead-based paint exposure from renovation, repair, and painting of public and commercial buildings as required by section 402(c)(3) of Toxic Substances Control Act. SBAR Panel is being established pursuant to Regulatory Flexibility Act, and will include representatives from Small Business Administration, Office of Management and Budget, and EPA.

May 5, 2014 CEA® announced that results of independent audit confirm record number of international professionals – 40,828 (12.7% increase from 2013 CES) – attended 2014 International CES® from 144 countries. There were also 6,757 press and industry analysts in attendance. Spanning January 7–10, 2014 CES welcomed 160,498 industry professionals overall (5% more than 2013). Outside of audit, CEA confirmed 3,673 exhibitors (12% up from 2013 CES) unveiled their latest tech innovations at 2014 CES.
