Lyman Award for outstanding achievement in aerospace communications. Acknowledged as expert on defense and federal management, Barnard's journalism career spanned 30 years. Under his direction, Defense News twice received Gerald R. Ford Foundation award. Barnard has also received National Press Club award for excellence in consumer reporting.
Hand-Held Device catches early signs of retinal disease.

December 27, 2013 Scanning patient's entire retina in seconds, hand-held optical device could aid primary care physicians in early detection of retinal diseases, including diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and macular degeneration. Device combines ultrahigh-speed 3-D imaging, tiny MEMS mirror for scanning, and technique to correct for unintentional movement by patient. Researchers at MIT describe their ophthalmic-screening instrument in paper published in The Optical Society's Biomedical Optics Express journal.
Florida Pesticide Producer to pay $1.7 million penalty.

December 27, 2013 EPA announced that Harrell's LLC, a pesticide producer based in Lakeland, FL, has agreed to pay $1,736,560 in civil penalties for violating FIFRA by allegedly distributing and selling pesticides over 350 times without labels or with labels that were illegible. EPA also alleged that the company distributed or sold pesticides in violation of a prior "stop sale" order issued by EPA, and produced large amounts of pesticides over several years at its Alabama facility before registering with the EPA.

December 27, 2013 Recognizing years of service and dedication toward developing international standards for nondestructive testing industry, ASTM International Committee E07 on Nondestructive Testing honored Robert Hardison with Lifetime Achievement Award. Hardison, ASTM member since 1967, led E07 as chairman for two consecutive terms, initiated establishment of Subcommittee E07.95 on Long-Range Planning, and served terms on ASTM board of directors and Standing Committee on Technical Committee Operations.
NEMA supports energy efficiency incentives in tax reform.

December 27, 2013 Commenting on Senate Finance Committee Chairman Baucus’ energy tax reform proposals, NEMA President and CEO Evan R. Gaddis stated that measures to incentivize energy efficiency—which regrettably are not included in current draft—are vital components of any plan to cut emissions and increase energy security. U.S. wastes more energy than it consumes, which is why NEMA has proposed a technology-neutral package of tax incentives for energy efficiency in buildings, factories, and the electric grid.

These could include post-fire/case studies; experimental structure ignition and ember accumulation studies; WUI exposure computer modeling studies, and studies evaluating mitigation strategies.

December 24, 2013 EPA's interactive Chemical Safety for Sustainability or iCSS Dashboard provides access to data from innovative screening technologies for chemicals that are found in industrial and consumer products, food additives, and drugs. As part of data release, EPA is announcing ToxCast Data Challenges, a series of challenges inviting science and technology community to work with the data and provide solutions for how the new chemical screening data can be used to predict potential health effects.

TRIB Video highlights environmental benefits of retreading.

December 24, 2013 TRIB has joined forces with American Commercial Tire Network to launch a video that highlights the massive environmental benefits of tire retreading. According to TRIB Managing Director David Stevens, retreading conserves huge amounts of raw materials, reduces carbon dioxide output, keeps millions of tires out of landfill every year, and eventually helps with recycling of end-of-life tires to be used in other applications such as pavement and rubber mulch.

December 20, 2013 EPA is announcing availability of $4 million in grant funding to establish clean diesel projects aimed at reducing emissions from marine and inland water ports, many of which are in areas that face environmental justice challenges. Available under Diesel Emission Reduction Act Program, grant competition is the first to focus solely on reducing emissions at ports. DERA funds are used to clean up legacy fleet of diesel engines that were produced before more recent environmental standards.
BIO Supports Budget Action to free up FDA user fees.

December 20, 2013 BIO applauded House of Representatives for passing bipartisan budget deal that raises discretionary budget caps, which should provide FDA with complete access to its user fees for fiscal years 2014 and 2015. Thus commending Congress, BIO President and CEO Jim Greenwood noted "the forward-thinking action" and called on House and Senate to pass both S. 1413, Pryor/Blunt FDA User Fee Protection Act, and H.R. 2725, Lance/Eshoo FDA SOS Act, to ensure FDA user fees are never again sequestered.

Scott Peters (D-CA) for introducing the Second Generation Biofuel Extension Act of 2013, which provides a 1-year extension of the Second Generation Biofuel Producer Credit and the Special Allowance for Second Generation Biofuel Plant Property. According to Brent Erickson, EVP of BIO's Industrial & Environmental Section, extension of these tax provisions is needed to keep the playing field level for advanced biofuel companies commercializing innovative technologies.
