April 4, 2012 In new approach to invisibility cloaking, team of French researchers has proposed isolating or cloaking objects from sources of heat. Researchers describe this method in paper titled "Transformation Thermodynamics: Cloaking and Concentrating Heat Flux," which can be found in OSA's Optics Express journal. Tapping into some principles of optical cloaking, method may lead to novel ways to control heat in electronics and, on larger scale, may prove useful for spacecraft and solar technologies.
BIO stresses importance of biofuels for national security.

April 3, 2012 In letter to House Armed Services Committee and its Subcommittee on Readiness, BIO emphasized that domestic biofuel production is necessary for energy and national security. According to BIO President Jim Greenwood, military's reliance on oil is a liability that enemies can exploit by blocking access to fuel supplies during missions. While cost of renewable energy is high now, it is declining rapidly through ongoing research and development and early commercialization efforts.

Over last 6 years, NIST has actively participated in national and international phase-out efforts to identify alternative thermometers for broad range of measurement applications. IPC releases PCB industry results for February 2012.

April 2, 2012 According to findings from IPC's North American PCB Statistical Program, rigid PCB shipments were down 1.9% in February 2012 from February 2011, but bookings increased 6.9% year over year. Compared to previous month, rigid PCB shipments increased 5.9%. Book-to-bill ratio for rigid PCB industry climbed to 1.04 in February 2012. In February 2012, flexible circuit shipments were down 6.4%, bookings were up 1.8% compared to February 2011, and book-to-bill ratio rose to 1.10.

March 30, 2012 Updated IPC-2223, Sectional Design Standard for Flexible Printed Boards, now includes new design guidance and requirements for preformed bends, irregular folds and creases, staggered flexible layer bands as an alternative to bookbinder designs, and depanelization methods for flexible and rigid-flex array sub-pallets. Appendix A is new design tutorial with guidance on material selection, size and shape of flex circuits and fabrication allowances.

March 30, 2012 Biofuel and renewable energy organizations asked Congressional leaders to continue full support of Renewable Fuel Standard. With this standard in place, BIO President and CEO Jim Greenwood argues, private companies have moved toward commercialization of advanced biofuels as quickly as possible, that they are "playing by the rules," and that they only ask federal policy remain stable in order to "continue putting steel in the ground" and creating permanent biotechnology/energy jobs.
