April 26, 2012 Developed by Subcommittee F25.01 on Structures, ASTM F2935, Specification for Chocks, Ship Mooring, Cast Steel covers principal dimensions and materials of closed chocks, used for mooring, for installation on ships. Shipboard hardware designers and manufacturers, as well as ship owners and operators are invited to join F25.01 in development of future proposed standards related to material, design, construction, inspection, and maintenance of ship structures.
Standardization Roadmap for Electric Vehicles is released by ANSI.

April 26, 2012 Standardization Roadmap for Electric Vehicles v1.0 assesses standards, codes, and regulations, as well as conformance and training programs, needed to facilitate safe, mass deployment of electric vehicles and charging infrastructure. Roadmap focuses on plug-in electric vehicles, both full battery electric and hybrids. Standardization issues that relate to consumer adoption, including EV safety, affordability, interoperability, performance, and environmental impact, are considered.

This 53-page report presents technology demands of today and foretells changes expected by 2014 that will affect PCB fabricators as well as materials and equipment suppliers. Study was conducted in late 2011 in English and Chinese, with 41 PCB manufacturing companies from Asia, Europe, and North America participating.

April 26, 2012 According to Inventory of U.S. Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Sinks: 1990-2010, overall emissions in 2010 increased by 3.2% from previous year. Trend is attributed to increase in energy consumption across all economic sectors, due to increasing energy demand associated with expanding economy, and increased demand for electricity for air conditioning due to warmer summer weather. Total emissions of 6 main greenhouse gases in 2010 were equivalent to 6,822 million metric tons of carbon dioxide.

April 26, 2012 U.S. Department of Energy, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and U.S. Department of the Interior announced formal partnership to coordinate and align all research associated with development of nation's unconventional natural gas and oil resources. Partnership exemplifies cross-government coordination required under President Obama's executive order, which created new Interagency Working Group to Support Safe and Responsible Development of Unconventional Domestic Natural Gas Resources.

NIST Team receives Energy and Environmental Stewardship award.

April 26, 2012 A team from NIST has received 2012 Energy and Environmental Stewardship award from Department of Commerce for design and installation of an array of solar panels. Photovoltaic array was installed at WWVH in Kekaha, Hawaii, one of 2 NIST radio stations that disseminate official U.S. time. System generates 120 kW and offsets significant amount of station's electricity needs, helping to reduce costs, as well as use of polluting fuel oil, which must be imported to Kauai.

April 25, 2012 Subcommittee D13.21 on Pile Floor Coverings seeks experts who may be using ASTM D5251, Practice for the Operation of the Tetrapod Walker Drum Tester, in hopes of gauging current level of interest in said standard. ASTM D5251 describes equipment and operation of Tetrapod Walker for testing unused pile floor coverings with thickness of 20 mm or less. Anyone who uses D5251 is encouraged to join in revising standard, which is scheduled to withdrawn later in 2012 if not revised/reapproved.

April 25, 2012 State transportation departments across USA will be promoting "Don't Barrel Through Work Zones - Drive Smart to Arrive Alive" message during National Work Zone Awareness Week (April 22-28). Among other events, departments of transportation in Washington, Mississippi, and Tennessee launched Operation Go Orange events that encourage local businesses, government agencies, and state employees to wear and/or prominently display color orange as reminder to drive safely through work zones.

This confidence is gained through application of common food safety management systems, supported by credible testing and inspection regimes.

ELFA March 2012 MLFI shows increases in new business.

April 25, 2012 Reporting economic activity for equipment finance sector, ELFA's Monthly Leasing and Finance Index (MLFI-25) shows overall new business volume for March up 10% from same period in 2011, 36% compared to previous month, and 17% year-to-date. Receivables over 30 days increased to 2.8% from 2.5% in February and declined 20% compared to 2011. Charge-offs increased to 0.7% from 0.5% of previous month and decreased by 46% compared to previous year.

April 25, 2012 ASTM International Committee E07 on Nondestructive Testing has developed standard ASTM E2863, Practice for Acoustic Emission Examination of Welded Steel Sphere Vessels Using Thermal Pressurization. Pertaining to gas-filled pressure vessels used aboard aircraft for fire suppression, standard will allow Halon bottles to be recertified at maintenance facility and immediately returned to aircraft. U.S. Department of Transportation requires periodic recertification of bottles.
