AAMA releases updated specification for anodized aluminum.

April 30, 2012 Updated from 1998 version, AMA 611-12, Voluntary Specification for Anodized Architectural Aluminum, describes test procedures and requirements for high performance (Class I) and commercial (Class II) architectural quality aluminum oxide coatings applied to aluminum extrusions and panels for architectural products. Specification also covers anodized finishes produced in batch or continuous coil.
Standard will improve radiometry-related uncertainty estimates.

April 30, 2012 Proposed standard, ASTM WK36479, Practice for Uncertainty Evaluation of Calibration and Measurements with Pyranometers and Pyrheliometers, is being developed by Subcommittee G03.09 on Radiometry, part of Committee G03 on Weathering and Durability. Standard will improve accuracy and usefulness of radiometry-related uncertainty estimates in solar renewable energy applications, such as system performance and acceptance testing, resource assessment, and solar energy system design engineering.

April 30, 2012 Number of exhibitor contracts for IPC APEX EXPOŽ 2013 is nearing double-digit growth over same time last year. According to IPC Sales Director Mary Mac Kinnon, 111,300 ft˛ has been contracted to date. Event will take place February 19-21 at San Diego Convention Center, and IPC will begin space selection process on May 22. Mac Kinnon stated, "Our number one priority is to ensure that our exhibitors and attendees have the best and most comfortable environment to conduct and grow business."

April 27, 2012 Developed by Subcommittee G01.10 on Corrosion in Soils, ASTM WK35986, Test Method for Field Inspection of Transmission Poles and Lattice Towers, will detail multilevel approach for performing above- and below-ground inspection of transmission poles and lattice towers in the field. Once approved, ASTM WK35986 will be used by electrical utilities and subcontractors to accurately diagnose potential corrosion issues before they interrupt electrical service.
Inhibited Turbine Oils Standard is being developed by ASTM.

April 27, 2012 Proposed standard ASTM WK36093, Test Method for Determination of Oxidation Stability and Insoluble Formation of Inhibited Turbine Oils at 120°C Without the Inclusion of Water (Dry TOST Method), will aid in assessing varnish generation potential of turbine oils on industrial lubricated equipment parts. Standard could be applicable to any industrial lubricant as indication of varnish potential, and primary users will include lubricant and additive suppliers and testing laboratories.

April 27, 2012 Biotechnology Industry Organization, Advanced Biofuels Association, Algal Biomass Organization, Airlines for America, and National Farm Bureau Federation recently wrote Senate Appropriations Committee. Letter asks leaders to include authorization for U.S. Department of Energy to transfer funds necessary to DOE's support of interagency Defense Production Act project to ramp up production of military aviation and diesel fuels, which also will aid in future commercial applications.

April 27, 2012 Looking for ways to thermochemically treat biomass to achieve end product similar to oil, NREL researchers looked at gasification. This process takes biomass and heats it with steam and air to produce synthesis gas (syngas). During the syngas process, however, fouling tars and other undesired components are also created. NREL has patented a fluidizable tar reforming catalyst that converts tars into additional syngas to make thermochemically derived biomass syngas ready for fuel synthesis.

April 27, 2012 According to April 2012 PMA Business Conditions Report, metalforming companies anticipate dip in business conditions during next 3 months. Report shows that 37% of participants expect economic activity to improve during next 3 months, down from 46% in March. Companies also anticipate downward trend in incoming orders, with 43% forecasting increase in orders, compared to 47% in March. Only 46% of participants report that shipping levels are above levels of 3 months ago, down from 53% in March.

April 26, 2012 Proposed ASTM International standard WK35993, Test Method for Analysis of Aluminum and Aluminum Alloys by Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometry (Performance Based Method), will provide up-to-date method for aluminum industry to analyze samples. Being developed by Subcommittee E01.04 on Aluminum and Magnesium, standard will enable users to analyze for up to 31 elements in aluminum alloys. Uses include identifying alloys, checking conformance, and determining composition.

Shipboard hardware designers and manufacturers, as well as ship owners and operators are invited to join F25.01 in development of future proposed standards related to material, design, construction, inspection, and maintenance of ship structures.

April 26, 2012 Standardization Roadmap for Electric Vehicles v1.0 assesses standards, codes, and regulations, as well as conformance and training programs, needed to facilitate safe, mass deployment of electric vehicles and charging infrastructure. Roadmap focuses on plug-in electric vehicles, both full battery electric and hybrids. Standardization issues that relate to consumer adoption, including EV safety, affordability, interoperability, performance, and environmental impact, are considered.

April 26, 2012 According to Inventory of U.S. Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Sinks: 1990-2010, overall emissions in 2010 increased by 3.2% from previous year. Trend is attributed to increase in energy consumption across all economic sectors, due to increasing energy demand associated with expanding economy, and increased demand for electricity for air conditioning due to warmer summer weather. Total emissions of 6 main greenhouse gases in 2010 were equivalent to 6,822 million metric tons of carbon dioxide.

Partnership exemplifies cross-government coordination required under President Obama's executive order, which created new Interagency Working Group to Support Safe and Responsible Development of Unconventional Domestic Natural Gas Resources.
