ACC Announces Winners of 2012 energy efficiency awards.

May 9, 2012 At 21st Annual Responsible Care Conference and Expo, American Chemistry Council (ACC) honored 19 of its member companies for implementing energy-efficiency improvements during 2011. In total, ACC presented 67 awards to companies, 16 of which were for programs deemed to be of "Exceptional Merit." Total annual energy saved by winning projects in all 5 categrories throughout 2011 was 16.9 trillion BTUs, enough to power all homes in a city the size of Norfolk, VA for one year.
AAMA Document Revision details aluminum care, handling processes.

It provides recommendations for proper care and handling of architectural aluminum products, from mill to fabricator to job site and through to project completion. New features include sections on visual inspections and care after building completion as well as information regarding damage or defects found on aluminum materials.

After citing concerns over impact of reliance on foreign oil and unpredictable fluctuations of oil market, letter points out progress made by U.S. advanced biofuel producers toward cost-competitiveness.
AIA urges passage of Export-Import Bank deal.

May 9, 2012 AIA urges Congress to pass bipartisan agreement reauthorizing Export-Import Bank, which will help level playing field versus foreign competitors who receive financing from their own governments. Cantor-Hoyer agreement reauthorizes Export-Import Bank for 3 years and extends its lending authority to $140 billion. While shrinking U.S. federal budget makes it imperative that U.S. aerospace companies increase exports of commercial products, Export-Import Bank makes many of those exports possible.
Kevin Bly Receives Award of Merit from ASTM petroleum committee.

Bly, senior chemist at ExxonMobil Research and Engineering Co. in Annandale, NJ. Bly serves as vice chairman and secretary for various subcommittees as well as section or working group chair on several groups. ASTM International member since 1991, he has received several awards and is also member of American Chemical Society.

Zechmeister, executive director of Masonry Institute of Michigan, received ASTM International Award of Merit and accompanying title of fellow from Committee C15 on Manufactured Masonry Units. ASTM International member since 1987, Zechmeister was honored for his contributions to standards for manufactured masonry units of fired clay and shale, concrete, and sand-lime units. Outside of ASTM International, Zechmeister is member of numerous societies, councils, and associations.

Each winning team will receive up to $90,000 to further develop design, apply it to real world applications, or move it to market.

NIST Researchers develop way to generate superluminal pulses.

May 7, 2012 Researchers at NIST have developed technique called 4-wave mixing, which reshapes parts of light pulses and advances them ahead of where they would have been had they been left to travel unaltered through vacuum. In experiment, pulses' peaks arrived 50 nanoseconds faster than light traveling through vacuum. New method could be used to improve timing of communications signals and to investigate propagation of quantum correlations.
