EPA Publishes 19th Annual Report on total U.S. GHG emissions.

April 25, 2014 Inventory of U.S. Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Sinks shows 3.4% decrease of overall U.S. greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in 2012 from 2011. Listed among contributing factors were decreases in energy consumption across all sectors in U.S. economy, decrease in carbon intensity for electricity generation due to fuel switching from coal to natural gas, decreased transportation sector emissions due to increased fuel efficiency, and limited new demand for passenger transportation.
EPA Scientist Receives PECASE Award for his innovative efforts.

April 25, 2014 Dr. Steven Thomas Purucker of U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) received Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE). By way of congratulations, EPA's Lek Kadeli cited Dr. Purucker's dedication and innovative research. Specifically, Dr. Purucker received PECASE award for efforts in creating modeling applications that help decision-makers and scientists conduct chemical risk assessments important for protecting human health and environment.
ASC promotes industry at USA Science and Engineering Festival.

April 24, 2014 On April 26–27, ASC will be participating in USA Science & Engineering Festival, which was founded by Lockheed Martin to promote science, technology, engineering, and math curriculum at all educational levels within U.S. education system. Every half hour, ASC staff will demo how to make magnets with artwork, magazines, wrapping paper, or printables using adhesives. ASC will also be promoting World of Glue Instructional Unit developed by Elmer’s Glue in consultation with ASC and DNPA international.
EPA releases list of cities with most Energy Star buildings.

April 24, 2014 EPA announced sixth annual list of top 25 U.S. metropolitan areas with the most Energy Star certified buildings. Energy Star certified buildings, including office buildings, schools, hotels, and retail stores, use an average of 35% less energy and are responsible for 35% less carbon dioxide emissions than typical buildings. Top 10 cities on the list include: Los Angeles; Washington, D.C.; Atlanta; New York; San Francisco; Chicago; Dallas; Denver; Philadelphia; and Houston.

Translucent Panel redirects sunlight to urban alleyways.

April 24, 2014 In dense urban centers, many people live and work in dim and narrow streets surrounded by tall buildings that block sunlight. To alleviate the problem, Egyptian researchers have developed a corrugated, translucent panel that is mounted on rooftops and hung over the edge at an angle, where it spreads sunlight onto street below. Researchers describe their design in a paper published in Energy Express, a supplement of The Optical Society’s open-access journal Optics Express.
