March 22, 2012 Aluminum Association, Aluminum Extruders Council, and Aluminum Anodizers Council will host Aluminum Week October 15-18, 2012. Combined program will include Aluminum Association's Annual Meeting, AEC Extrusion Symposium, and AAC International Anodizing Conference and Exposition. During event, leaders can assess state of U.S. aluminum industry and determine how best to maximize association resources and promote cooperation to support industry growth.
ANSI seeks comments on proposal for plastic and rubber machine standards.

March 22, 2012 UNI, national standards body of Italy, submitted proposal to International Organization for Standardization (ISO) for new field of activity on plastic and rubber machines. As U.S. member body to ISO, ANSI invites all interested stakeholders to submit comments on this proposal by April 23, 2012. Proposed scope of activity would cover standardization related to machines used for preparation and processing of plastics and rubber.
NTIA seeks public input on consumer data privacy issues.

March 22, 2012 In March 5 Federal Register notice, National Telecommunications and Information Administration is requesting comment on substantive consumer data privacy issues that warrant development of legally enforceable codes of conduct, as well as procedures to foster development of codes. NTIA seeks comments on what issues should be addressed, including mobile apps, cloud computing services, accountability mechanisms, online services directed toward teenagers/children, and trusted identity systems.
NIST releases technical guidance for evaluating EHRs.

March 22, 2012 NIST has outlined formal procedures for evaluating usability of Electronic Health Records systems. Proposed usability protocol encourages user-centered approach to development of EHR systems. It provides methods to measure and address critical errors in user performance before those systems are deployed in medical setting. Three-step process consists of an analysis of how application functions, expert review, and validation testing of user interface to make sure it works as intended.
NIST Workshop to examine federal conformity assessment practices.

Also, workshop will include panel discussions and examine case studies.

March 21, 2012 According to World Health Organization, exposure to smoke from traditional cookstoves and open fires causes 2 million premature deaths annually. Partnership for Clean Indoor Air and Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves organized International Workshop on cookstoves, and ANSI served as secretariat. During conference, more than 80 stakeholders representing more than 20 countries worked toward facilitating widespread use of clean, efficient, and safe cookstove technology through standardization.

March 21, 2012 SIS, the Swedish Standards Institute, has submitted proposal to ISO to convert ISO Project Committee 241, Road Traffic Safety Management System, into new ISO technical committee with expanded scope and work program. According to proposal, ISO technical committee would focus on development of requirement standard for road traffic safety, RTS specific auditing requirements in third-party certification, and implementation and guidance documents.

March 21, 2012 Developed by Subcommittee E05.14 on External Fire Exposures, ASTM E2726/E2726M, Test Method for Evaluating the Fire-Test-Response of Deck Structures to Burning Brands, will assist building code officials, manufacturers, and home owners in assessing fire performance of decking materials. Test simulates deck exposed to burning embers on upper horizontal surface. ASTM E2726/E2726M is in response to the growing urban wildland fire concern in many states.

Proposed standard will allow end users to test set of tags to determine overall performance prior to placing LF RFID tag in an animal. Initial test will generate bench mark that the LF RFID technology end-user can expect in real-world applications.

March 21, 2012 Despite loss of 13,000 construction jobs in February, industry's unemployment rate dipped to 17.1%, down from 17.7% in January, according to U.S. Labor Department's March 9 employment report. Nation's construction industry has added 65,000 jobs, or 1.2% since February 2011, when unemployment rate stood at 21.8%. Both residential and nonresidential building construction sectors added 2,000 jobs in February for year over year increases of 2.3% and 1.3%, respectively.

Gray and Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes-Norton of the District of Columbia to announce creation of The Anacostia River Revitalization Fund. The fund, which will invest $1 million in restoration activities this year, with total goal of investing $5 million over next 3 years, will be used protect and restore Anacostia River and to create national model for watershed conservation.
EPA issues 2011 fuel economy trends report.

March 21, 2012 According to EPA's annual report, "Light-Duty Automotive Technology, Carbon Dioxide Emissions, and Fuel Economy Trends: 1975 Through 2011," average fuel efficiency for new cars and light duty trucks has increased while CO2 emissions continue to decrease for seventh consecutive year. For 2010, average real world CO2 emissions from new vehicles were 394 g of CO2/mile and average fuel economy value was 22.6 mpg. EPA projects improvement in 2011 to 391 g of CO2/mile and 22.8 mpg.
