May 21, 2012 ANSI invites interested stakeholders to submit comments by June 15, 2012 on proposal of ISO Committee on Consumer Policy for new ISO standard on guidelines for consumer contact centers. Proposed new work item, Guidelines for customer contact centers, would provide guidance for business process service centers and all customer contact centers (call centers) to address customer-reported issues of accessing and/or receiving satisfactory help and common frustrations.

This Blueprint calls for strengthening U.S. CTE programs and highlights need for credentials and certificates accredited by neutral third-parties such as ANSI.

May 21, 2012 With input of suppliers, inspectors, operators, and consumers, Trampoline Court Task Group developed ASTM WK35776, New Practice for the Design, Manufacture, Installation, Operation, Maintenance, Inspection, and Major Modification of Trampoline Courts. Jeff Platt, chairman of International Association of Trampoline Parks, called this standard "key to providing an enjoyable participatory experience" for guests and is pleased with the group's dedication and commitment.
Committee on UAS appoints Ted Wierzbanowski as chairman.

May 21, 2012 ASTM International Committee F38 on Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) elected Ted Wierzbanowski, director of UAS airspace integration at AeroVironment Inc. in Monrovia, CA, as its new chairman. As such, Wierzbanowski will lead F38 as it focuses on development and approval of technical standards required for operation of small UAS in National Airspace System. Wierzbanowski also chairs Subcommittee F38.02 on Flight Operations and is member of Committee F37 on Light Sport Aircraft.

Publication specifies chromaticities recommended for general lighting with SSL products and also gives advise as to white light chromaticities. Workshop will offer overview of national strategy for chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosives (CBRNE) standards as well as status of related work being done in federal government. There will be opportunity for open discussion on how strategy impacts private-sector organizations.

May 18, 2012 ISO Committee on Consumer Policy has submitted proposal to ISO for new ISO standard on guidelines for consumer warranties. Proposed new work item would provide producers or sellers of goods and services with guidance on requirements for effective warranties. Intent is to address problems with warranties in relation to goods or services sold, either within one jurisdiction or across a number of different jurisdictions. ANSI invites interested stakeholders to submit comments by June 15, 2012.
FAA and Aviation Community raise awareness on child safety.

May 18, 2012 As part of U.S. DOT's National Transportation Week and to kick off summer travel season, FAA launched education effort to help parents and caregivers make informed choices about their child's safety when they fly. FAA has developed new website that includes downloadable tip sheet for parents and caregivers and video demonstration on how to properly install a child safety seat on an airplane. It also includes details about FAA-approved child harness devices, and links to FAQs.

The bank has been a revenue generator for U.S. government and levels the playing field for U.S. exporters. Three-year reauthorization and extended lending authority of $140 billion is particularly helpful to small- and medium-sized manufacturers who need to boost their exports to offset shrinking federal budgets.

Highlights include guidance on various topics related to R/D and testing users, including use of alignment eyewear, use of non-certified lasers, export controls, use of warning signs, inclusion of sample audit forms for labs and program reviews, and deletion of some CDRH-based control measures.
FAA steps up enforcement of laser penalties.

May 18, 2012 FAA has directed its investigators and staff to pursue stiffer penalties for individuals who purposefully point laser devices at aircraft. Number of reported incidents rose from 2,836 in 2010, to 3,592 in 2011. In many cases, pilots have reported temporary blindness or had to take evasive measures to avoid laser light. Max penalty for 1 laser strike is $11,000, and FAA has proposed civil penalties against individuals for multiple laser incidents, with $30,800 being the highest.

Index shows, between 4Q2011 and 1Q2012, gains in business activity, new orders, employment, supplier deliveries, inventories, prices, and backlog. Participating PTDA members expect 2012 to be another year of growth with average forecast of 11%, which is up from 9% in 4Q11 survey.
