June 14, 2012 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award applicants total 39 for 2012. Seeking recognition for organizational performance excellence through innovation and improvement, each applicant will be evaluated by independent board of 478 examiners in 7 areas: leadership; strategic planning; operations focus; measurement, analysis, and knowledge management; workforce focus; process management; and results. For 2012, further criteria has been added for application qualification.
EPA Grants will help clean up contaminated sites.

June 14, 2012 EPA announced $69.3 million in grants for new investments to provide communities with funding needed to clean and redevelop contaminated properties, boost local economies, and create jobs while protecting public health. According to EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson, "These grants will be the first step in getting pollution out and putting jobs back into neighborhoods across the country." Grantees totaling 245 will include tribes and communities in 39 states across USA.

Manufacturing Technology Orders up 10.2% in April.

June 13, 2012 April U.S. manufacturing technology orders totaled $410.42 million, down 17.0% from March but up 2.9% when compared with total of $398.73 million reported for April 2011. With year-to-date total of $1,763.77 million, 2012 is up 10.2% compared with 2011. Manufacturing firms continue to hire, with year-over-year unemployment down from nearly 10% in 2011 to a little under 7% this year. In first quarter, U.S. manufacturing technology exports rose consistently and factory productivity increased 5%.

June 13, 2012 Under memorandum of understanding (MOU), EPA and U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment Program will connect veterans with disabilities to career opportunities in water and wastewater sectors. EPA and VA will work with water utilities, states, and local VA counselors to promote water sector careers and resources for finding water jobs for veterans as well as educational programs to help veterans transition into careers in water industries.
