Baby Monitor Standard approved by ASTM committee.

June 15, 2012 ASTM F2951, Consumer Safety Specification for Baby Monitors, was developed by Subcommittee F15.68 on Baby Monitors in response U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission report concerning 7 deaths that have resulted from infants strangling in monitor cords when they had been placed too close to crib. According to F15.68 chairman Anthony Paolo, "All cords must now be labeled with a conspicuous strangulation hazard warning label" and stipulates cords should be mounted 3+ ft away from crib.
Proposed Standard to address buried pipe coating repair.

June 15, 2012 ASTM WK36282, Guide for Selection of Coating for Repair and Rehabilitation of Buried Pipe Coatings for Nuclear Power Plants, is being developed by Subcommittee D33.02 on Service and Material Parameters. Standard will address function of buried pipe coatings, plant systems that may include buried pipe, generic types of field-applied buried pipe repair and refurbishment coatings, and in-situ factors that affect selection of field-applied buried pipe repair and replacement coatings.

June 15, 2012 As part of larger effort to reduce amount of mercury, a potent neurotoxin, in the environment, NIST has launched a website to help industry scientists and engineers decide on best temperature measurement alternative for their purposes. Website also includes information about myths pertaining to mercury and temperature measurement and how to safely package and recycle mercury-containing products.

NAM Pushes Russia PNTR Legislation as exports booster.

June 14, 2012 NAM's Frank Vargo urged Congress to pass, "as soon as possible," Russia Permanent Normal Trade Relations (PNTR) legislation. Vargo called this bipartisan effort "a positive step toward opening a new market in Russia for U.S.-manufactured goods exports" and cited President's Export Council estimates that U.S. exports to Russia could double or triple over next few years. "If Congress fails to act," Vargo warned, "competitors will have an advantage in the $300 billion Russian import market."

June 14, 2012 NAM VP for HR Policy Joe Trauger's statement supported amendments addressing recent National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) activity offered by Sen Lindsey Graham to Fiscal Year 2013 Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act. Trauger asserted that allowing "micro-unions" would foster hostile work environments for employees and employers alike, and that "ambush elections" rule eliminates preparation time needed to make important decisions.

Wi-Fi CERTIFIED Miracast(TM) devices make use of Wi-Fi connection to deliver A/V content from one device to another, without cables or connection to existing Wi-Fi network. With devices, users can do things such as watch videos from smartphone on big screen TV or share laptop screen with conference room projector.
Ten ASTM Water Standards included in EPA final rule.

June 14, 2012 Ten standards developed by ASTM International Committee D19 on Water have been included in final rule published in Code of Federal Regulations by U.S. EPA to approve methods for measuring regulated pollutants in wastewater. Many standards in Methods Update Rule are either new or revised standards for analysis of cyanides in water. Implementing technology and chemistries that are less susceptible to matrix interferences, new ASTM standards enable more accurate results.

June 14, 2012 ASTM D7799, Specification for Tufted and Woven Broadloom Carpet Adhesives Without Homogenous PVC or Non-PVC Backings, was developed by Subcommittee D14.70 on Construction Adhesives, part of ASTM International Committee D14 on Adhesives. Specification establishes minimum requirements for adhesives used for installation of tufted or woven broadloom carpet, within climate controlled structure, when adhered directly and permanently to structurally sound and recommended substrate.

Based on existing Australian standard 3806-2006, Compliance programs, proposed new work item would provide principles and guidance for organizations designing, developing, implementing, maintaining, and improving effective compliance program. ANSI invites all interested stakeholders to submit comments on proposal by Friday, July 27, 2012.

June 14, 2012 Leaders of IPC's EHS Committee met with senior EPA staff to discuss regulatory relief for printed board manufacturing. Uncertainty around implementation of 2008 Definition of Solid Waste rule, combined with limitations of EPA's 2011 proposed rule, has inhibited recycling of wastewater treatment sludges from electroplating operations. IPC representatives urged director of EPA's Office of Resource Conservation and Recovery to encourage secondary materials recycling in revision of RCRA DSW rule.
NIST Releases Final Version of Bluetooth security guide.

June 14, 2012 NIST has issued final version of Guide to Bluetooth Security (NIST Special Publication 800-121 Rev. 1), which describes security capabilities of technologies based on Bluetooth and gives recommendations on effectively securing such devices. Changes include update to vulnerability mitigation information for "Secure Simple Pairing" as well as introduction of Bluetooth version 3.0 High Speed and Bluetooth version 4.0 Low Energy security mechanisms and recommendations.
