June 13, 2012 ASTM International Committee D20 on Plastics presented Award of Merit and accompanying title of fellow to Mark Lavach, manager of applications development and technical services in Functional Additives Division at Arkema Inc. Lavach works on several D20 subcommittees and is chairman of D20.13 on Statistical Methods as well as vice chairman of D20.20 on Plastic Lumber. With contributions recognized by various awards from D20, Lavach has been ASTM member since 1994.
Michael Katcher receives Award of Merit.

June 13, 2012 ASTM Committee B02 on Nonferrous Metals and Alloys has presented Award of Merit to Michael Katcher, manager, codes and standards at Haynes International. Katcher, who also received honorary title of ASTM fellow, is chairman of Committee B02, and leads Subcommittee B02.92, the U.S. Technical Advisory Group to ISO Technical Committee 155 on Nickel and Nickel Alloys. A member of ASTM since 1995, Katcher also works on Committee E01 on Analytical Chemistry for Metals, Ores and Related Materials.
SPE ACCE announces first parts competition at 2012 show.

Manufacturing Technology Orders up 10.2% in April.

June 13, 2012 April U.S. manufacturing technology orders totaled $410.42 million, down 17.0% from March but up 2.9% when compared with total of $398.73 million reported for April 2011. With year-to-date total of $1,763.77 million, 2012 is up 10.2% compared with 2011. Manufacturing firms continue to hire, with year-over-year unemployment down from nearly 10% in 2011 to a little under 7% this year. In first quarter, U.S. manufacturing technology exports rose consistently and factory productivity increased 5%.

Researchers interviewed nearly 200 packaging professionals, processing professionals, and plant managers. Respondents reported spending 44-56% of their time working on packaging functions, followed by processing functions and then "other functions".

June 13, 2012 Under memorandum of understanding (MOU), EPA and U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment Program will connect veterans with disabilities to career opportunities in water and wastewater sectors. EPA and VA will work with water utilities, states, and local VA counselors to promote water sector careers and resources for finding water jobs for veterans as well as educational programs to help veterans transition into careers in water industries.

June 13, 2012 During American Institute of Architects National Convention, EPA recognized nearly 100 commercial building design projects submitted by 43 architecture firms that achieved Designed to Earn the Energy Star certification in past year. Projects are nearly 40% more energy efficient than typical buildings, and in total, are estimated to prevent nearly 175,000 metric tons of GHG emissions annually and save more than $23 million in annual energy costs across 10 million ft² of commercial space.

Funding from Ex-Im Bank has also generated more than $3.4 billion for the American taxpayer since 2005.

June 13, 2012 According to IREC, unanimous vote by California Public Utilities Commission clarifying methodology for calculating State's 5% net metering cap will dramatically expand opportunities for California ratepayers to go solar. Vote brings to an end a discussion initiated by IREC in November 2009 concerning how to calculate cap. Under methodology adopted by Commission, more than 2,000 additional megawatts of solar can be installed under state's net metering program.

June 12, 2012 U.S. EPA's Small Business Innovation Research program awarded $2 million to 25 companies in support of technology development toward sustainable solutions for the environment. Technological concepts submitted to this year's competition include drinking water monitoring and treatment, sustainable infrastructures, green building, innovation in manufacturing, greenhouse gas reduction, air pollution monitoring, and control and waste monitoring and management.

June 12, 2012 Thabit Pulak, a sophomore at Richardson High School in Richardson, TX, was named recipient of EPA's Patrick H. Hurd Sustainability award for demonstrating commitment to environmental sustainability and stewardship. Pulak's project, a Home-Based Arsenic Bio-Sand Water Filter, uses nano particles made with kitchen materials easily found in Southeast Asia to enhance bio-sand water filter, so that it removes arsenic from water. Pulak will participate in National Sustainable Design Expo in 2013.

Standard will specifically consider how to determine hydraulic characteristics of filtration system by experimentally determining hydraulic conductivity of filter within the unit.

June 12, 2012 Proposed new standard, ASTM WK37628, Guide for Preparing for the Impact of Disasters/Emergencies on Local Residents/Visitors That Have Disabilities, will provide planning guidance for helping those with disabilities in disaster or emergency situation. According to E54.02 vice chairman Russell Salter, contents of this standard will help first responders and communities become more aware of concerns and issues of people with disabilities in planning for and surviving a disaster.
