During anniversary dinner on June 5, AFS honored 46 current corporate sponsors with plaques and special recognition. Conference included 9 plenary presentations, over 50 technical presentations, and 8 short courses ranging from Fundamentals of Liquid Filtration to advanced topics like Ultrafiltration Membranes. At Annual Awards Lunch, AFS paid tribute to those who have served AFS.
AEM urges conferees to reach agreement on transportation bill.

June 20, 2012 AEM President Dennis Slater issued statement after attending Transportation Construction Coalition fly-in and meeting with Members of Congress on both sides of aisle to urge swift action on transportation bill. In statement, Slater expressed that after 1,000 days, 9 extensions, and approaching June 30th deadline, he was pleased that bipartisan group of members are working in Congress to finally get long-term highway bill passed, since manufacturers depend on strong infrastructure system.
Nonresidential Construction Spending was down 0.7% in April.

June 20, 2012 According to June 1 report by U.S. Census Bureau, nonresidential construction spending fell 0.7% to $558.33 billion in April on seasonally adjusted annualized basis but is up 7.1% from April 2011. "With the U.S. economy decelerating for a third consecutive spring/summer," commented ABC Chief Economist Anirban Basu, "the forward looking indicators are no longer positive, implying that nonresidential construction momentum will continue to languish."
Construction Industry Unemployment dips to 14.2% in May 2012.

June 20, 2012 While U.S. construction industry lost 28,000 jobs in May, unemployment rate fell to 14.2% - down from 14.5% in April 2012 and 16.3% in May 2011 - according to the June 1 employment report by U.S. Labor Department. "While the construction industry unemployment rate did drop," said ABC Chief Economist Anirban Basu, "it's likely an indication that many construction workers have either found jobs in other industries, or have simply vanished from the workforce."
EPRI Releases EV fast charger demonstration results.

June 20, 2012 In February 2012 at its Knoxville, TN laboratory, EPRI demonstrated first prototype 2.4 kV, 45 kVA-based, solid-state, direct-current (DC) fast charging technology for electric vehicles. Using Nissan Leaf and Mitsubishi iMiEV, EPRI demonstrated charging and communication capabilities of Utility Direct Fast Charger technology with EV battery management systems. UI and web-based mobile data collection system were also included in demonstration.

June 20, 2012 NEMA published ANSI/NEMA C37.50 Low-Voltage AC Power Circuit Breakers Used in Enclosures - Test Procedures, the first new edition in 24 years. Document covers stationary or drawout circuit breakers of 2-, 3-, or 4-pole construction, with 1 or more rated max voltages of 635, 508, and 254 V for application on systems having nominal voltages of 600, 480, and 240 V. It applies to unfused or fused type breakers as well as manually operated or power operated units.

As U.S. member body to ISO, ANSI invites interested stakeholders to submit comments on said proposal by July 27, 2012. Proposed work item would set particular criteria around which consumables used in forensic DNA collection and analysis should be manufactured.

June 20, 2012 According to Welding and Gases Today Online, steering committees for parties in Welding Fume MDL have reached global settlement resolving nearly all welding fume cases pending in state or federal courts. In exchange for dismissing their lawsuits and releasing all manufacturers, distributors, and sellers of welding fume products from liability, participating plaintiffs will be eligible to receive payments from settlement pool being funded by welding rod manufacturers.

Vernon, LLC, have agreed to pay civil penalty of approximately $1 million and improve leak detection and repair practices to settle alleged violations of Clean Air Act at chemical manufacturing facilities in Mt. Vernon, IN. and Burkville, AL. Emissions of hazardous air pollutants from leaking equipment may cause serious health effects including cancer, reproductive issues, and birth defects.
NAM Chief Economist comments on May Jobs Report.

June 20, 2012 In his post, A Disappointing May Jobs Report, Chad Moutray notes economy added 69,000 net new jobs in May, with manufacturing up 12,000, as reported by The Bureau of Labor Statistics. Moutray calls this labor report "consistent with recent weaknesses...seen in the global and domestic marketplace" and points out anxieties felt regarding Europe and long-term tax policies. Moutray also mentions rises in unemployment to 8.2% and "so-called real unemployment rate" to 14.8%.

Lewand, director of Insulating Materials Laboratory at Doble Engineering Co., Watertown, MA, has received Award of Merit and title of fellow from ASTM International Committee D27 on Electrical Insulating Liquids and Gases. A member of ASTM since 1989, Lewand works on several D27 subcommittees and is chairman of Subcommittee D27.06 on Chemical Test. He is a graduate of St. Mary's College of Maryland, where he received a bachelor's degree in biology.

North American Machine Vision Sales declined 2% in first quarter.

June 19, 2012 Statistics from AIA indicate machine vision sales in North America fell 2% compared to 1Q 2011, primarily from sales of complete vision systems. Sales of machine vision components gained 2%, led by growth in vision software (+26%), lighting products (+11%), and imaging boards (+7%). Also, smart camera sales rose 4%, while optics sales were up 1% in first quarter. "Though the market has cooled down a bit," said AIA President Jeff Burnstein, "the long term growth trend remains strong."
NASA, FAA Sign MOU to advance commercial space transportation.

June 19, 2012 FAA and NASA signed agreement to coordinate standards for commercial space travel of government and non-government astronauts to and from low-Earth orbit and International Space Station (ISS). Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) establishes policy for operational missions to space station. Commercial providers will be required to obtain license from FAA for public safety, while crew safety and mission assurance will be NASA's responsibility.
