NREL Director Arvizu named as National Science Board Chair.

June 11, 2012 Dan Arvizu, director of U.S. Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), has been elected for 2-year term as Chairman of the National Science Board. This 25-member body advises the president and Congress on science and engineering issues and acts as official policy setting and budget approving body for National Science Foundation. Arvizu has served as director of NREL since 2005 and was nominated to seat on board last year and confirmed by U.S. Senate.

June 11, 2012 In Spring 2012 issue of Welding and Gases Today, Dave Kiilunen, metallurgist and VP at Cor-Met, Inc., offers guidance on selecting hardfacing materials for shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) and flux-cored arc welding (FCAW) processes via his "Determining The Correct Hardfacing Product" article. Of note, gases and welding salespeople must consider factors such as application, wear resistance, and cost in order to make recommendations to customers.
NAM Lauds Senate Vote reauthorizing Ex-Im Bank.

June 11, 2012 NAM President and CEO Jay Timmons issued statement following Senate passage of H.R. 2072, which reauthorizes Export-Import (Ex-Im) Bank. In this statement, Timmons commends Senate standing up for jobs "by taking quick action on legislation reauthorizing the Bank and increasing its lending authority." Timmons also thanks House Majority Leader Eric Cantor and House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer for moving this agreement, which supports 290,000 jobs, to Senate.

Hubbling, manager of Laboratory Services at Metropolitan Council Environmental Services in St. Paul, MN, has received ASTM International Award of Merit and title of fellow from Committee D19 on Water. A member of ASTM International and Committee D19 since 1975, Hubbling serves as chairman of Subcommittee D19.02 on Quality Systems, Specifications and Statistics. Committee recognized his contributions with the Max Hecht Award in 2003 and D19 Certificate of Appreciation in 2007.

June 11, 2012 ASTM E2862, Practice for Probability of Detection Analysis for Hit/Miss Data, has been developed by Subcommittee E07.10 on Specialized NDT Methods, part of ASTM International Committee E07 on Nondestructive Testing. Standard provides necessary background and describes step-by-step process for analyzing nondestructive testing hit/miss data resulting from probability of detection examination, including minimum requirements for validating resulting POD curve.

NEMA Working Groups to address gaps in EV standards.

June 11, 2012 NEMA's Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment/Systems Section created working groups to address several gaps in EV charging standards identified in ANSI Electric Vehicle Standardization Roadmap. To address network roaming, group will develop standard that permits EV drivers to universally locate and reserve public charging spot. Second group will develop standard that will communicate metering data from end user to vehicle to cover gaps related to communication aspects of EV meters.

June 11, 2012 BP North America Inc. agreed to pay $8 million penalty and invest over $400 million to install pollution controls and cut emissions from petroleum refinery in Whiting, IN. This addresses complaint that alleges violations of Clean Air Act (CAA) requirements in connection with construction and expansion of Whiting Refinery as well as violations of 2001 consent decree with company that covered all of BP's refineries and was entered into as part of EPA's Petroleum Refinery Initiative.
Researchers Improve IR Detectors using SWCNs.

June 11, 2012 Team of researchers from Peking University, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Duke University is harnessing properties of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) to create highly sensitive, uncooled PV IR detectors. "Carbon Nanotube Arrays Based High-Performance Infrared Photodetector" paper, published in Optical Materials Express, describes this new type of detector, which may prove useful for industrial, military, manufacturing, optical communications, and scientific applications.

June 11, 2012 Developed by team of researchers in Israel, optical microscope can reveal same information as traditional blood test in real-time by shining light through the skin, without fluorescent dyes. Portable device relies on spectrally encoded confocal microscopy, which creates images by splitting light beam into its constituent colors. By eliminating long wait-time for blood test results, microscope might help spotlight warning signs before patient develops severe medical problems.
NREL to engineer smart homes.

June 11, 2012 Research engineers at NREL are working on a "smart" home that will communicate with electricity grid to know when power is cheap, tell appliances when to turn on or off, and even know when renewable energy resources are available to offset peak demand. NREL is leveraging 2 laboratories to make the smart home a reality - the soon-to-be-built Smart Power Laboratory, which is part of the Energy Systems Integration Facility, and the Automated Home Energy Management Laboratory.

June 11, 2012 American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) and International Code Council (ICC) intend to jointly develop ANSI standard: ASABE/ICC Landscape Irrigation Sprinkler and Emitter Standard. In establishing requirements for landscape sprinklers and emitters, standard will address design, performance, and uniform testing and assessment methods for such devices. Ultimately, this will enhance performance of entire irrigation system and promote water conservation.

Used to test propensity of athletic eye and face protection to fog during sporting event, standard would assess complete eye/face protection device (eyewear and frames) in as-worn position under variety of environmental conditions as to simulate athletic event. All interested parties are invited to take part.
