BIO Responds to Criticism of Navy's biofuels demonstration.

July 12, 2012 BIO's Brent Erickson issued statement supporting Navy's demonstration of advanced biofuels during Rim of the Pacific international naval maneuvers. Calling oil refinery industry's criticisms of said demonstration meritless, Erickson cited dangers of depending on foreign oil as well as associated costs. According to Erickson, BIO supports U.S. Navy's "strategically important" decision to support "viable, cost-competitive alternatives to foreign oil."

July 12, 2012 In the name of science, but with aim of saving lives, preventing injuries, and reducing property losses, members of New York City Fire Department spent much of the first 2 weeks in July setting fire to 20 abandoned townhouses on Governors Island. In series of live burn experiments, conducted in collaboration with NIST and UL, firefighters challenged conventional wisdom on, and tested new tactics for, controlling fires and rescuing occupants inside burning homes.

Recommendations included therein include adopting user-centered - doctors, nurses, and other clinicians - design approach informed by scientific knowledge of how people think, act, and coordinate to accomplish their goals.

BIO Says Affordable Care Act Ruling must lead to implementation.

July 12, 2012 In his statement on ruling issued by U.S. Supreme Court regarding Affordable Care Act, BIO President and CEO Jim Greenwood said BIO will continue to work with federal and state agencies to implement said law in a way that helps foster continued U.S. biotech development of lifesaving cures and other medical breakthroughs while expanding patient access to critical cures, medicines, and innovations. BIO will also continue to support efforts to repeal Independent Payment Advisory Board.

North Carolina Leaders call for action on budget sequestration.

July 11, 2012 Leaders of North Carolina's aerospace and defense community wrote to North Carolina's congressional delegation, urging quick action on legislation to repeal $500 billion in program cuts, which could cost N.C. 11,000 jobs. Governor Bev Perdue stated that sequestration cuts are a threat to the nation and the state. According to AIA president and CEO Marion Blakey, budget decisions need to be based on strategy and priorities, not one-size-ruins-all approach of sequestration.

While acknowledging industry challenges "both home and abroad," Chairman of the Board of Governors of AIA David Hess called this meeting "productive and necessary. He continued, saying "A global problem requires a global solution for a global industry."

July 11, 2012 Proposed standard, ASTM WK36552, Practice for Inactivation of Retrovirus by pH, is being developed by Subcommittee E55.04 on General Biopharmaceutical Standards, part of ASTM International Committee E55 on Manufacture of Pharmaceutical Products. Standard will provide important process step to be used in manufacture of protein-based drugs, such as antibodies and fusion proteins, made to inactive retroviruses.

U.S. announces Clean Air Act settlement with Wisconsin utility.

July 11, 2012 U.S. EPA and U.S. Department of Justice announced Clean Air Act settlement with Dairyland Power Cooperative that will cover utility's 3 power plants in Alma and Genoa, WI. DPC has agreed to invest approximately $150 million in pollution control technology that will protect public health and resolve violations of CAA. Settlement will also require that DPC spend $5 million on environmental mitigation projects and pay civil penalty of $950,000.

July 10, 2012 Adhesive and Sealant Council (ASC) questioned U.S. Green Building Council's (USGBC) commitment to consensus-based approach in development of LEED rating system. Consequently, ASC urged U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) to not recommend the system as green certification standard for Federal Government at Agency listening session. Mark Collatz of ASC specifically pointed out USGBC's "random approach to making revisions" and its lack of commitment to openness and due process.
Paul Shipp Receives Award of Merit for work on fire standards.

Shipp, Ph.D., principal research associate at USG Corp. in Libertyville, IL, received ASTM International Award of Merit and title of fellow for contributions to Committee E05 on Fire Standards. ASTM member since 1987, Shipp is past chairman of Committee E05 and leads Subcommittee E05.37 on Honors, Awards, and Nominations. Shipp also takes part several other ASTM committees and has served on ASTM board of directors as chairman of finance and audit committee.
