EBCI Indicates Slowing Improvement in North American business conditions.

May 2, 2012 Although it continues to point to economic environment conducive to industry growth, NEMA's Electroindustry Business Confidence Index (EBCI) for current North American conditions dropped nearly 13 points in April to 59.1. Survey's measure of degree of change in current North American conditions also suggested slowdown in improvement, dropping to +0.2. EBCI for future North American conditions was strongly positive in April, although index declined just over 4 points to 81.8.

May 2, 2012 Returning after hiatus of nearly 13 years, EPMA's Short Course took place March 18-20, 2012 in Helsingborg, Sweden. Sintering - Fundamentals and Mass Production saw 65 engineers and scientists from throughout Europe joined by 12 speakers from industry and academia. Together, they examined practical capabilities and applications of sintering technology as applied to powder metallurgy process. Participants had opportunity to discuss and explore problems and case studies.

May 2, 2012 IPC-9203, Users Guide to IPC-9202 and IPC-B-52 Standard Test Vehicle, provides clarification between what manufacturer should and must do for demonstrating materials and process compatibility. Specifically, document helps OEMs alleviate materials and process problems and serves as guide to using IPC-B-52 SIR (surface insulation resistance) test board. Together with IPC-9202, IPC-9203 gives OEMs information to ensure minor changes do not cause problems in field.

ANSI Submits Input on Federal Register notice from OMB.

May 2, 2012 In response to March 30 Federal Register notice by Office of Management and Budget (OMB), ANSI submitted input document on whether and how to supplement Circular A-119, "Federal Participation in the Development and Use of Voluntary Consensus Standards and in Conformity Assessment Activities." OMB stated issues in standards and conformity assessment areas may have emerged or evolved since Circular was last updated in 1998. Notice also announced May 15 workshop on OMB Circular A-119.

May 2, 2012 On April 25, more than 120 stakeholders and another 100 webinar attendees gathered to examine the need for a potential ANSI Energy Efficiency Standards Panel. Following open and interactive discussion period, one common theme that emerged was a call for greater coordination, participation, and harmonization of standardization efforts in the energy efficiency space. Participants suggested that the panel should seek to produce a roadmap to help advance energy efficiency in the U.S.

EPA announces available funding for clean diesel projects.

May 2, 2012 U.S. EPA is announcing availability of up to $20 million in FY 2012 grant funding to establish clean diesel projects aimed at reducing harmful pollution from nation's existing fleet of diesel engines and improving air quality and Americans' health. In addition to these grants, approximately $9 million will be available through direct state allocations. EPA estimates that for every $1 spent on clean diesel funding up to $13 of public health benefit is realized.

List includes 78 schools spanning 29 states and D.C. According to U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, these institutions "demonstrate...ways schools can help children build real-world skillsets, cut school costs, and provide healthy learning environments."

May 1, 2012 Top 50 Green Power Partnership list features organizations voluntarily using clean, renewable electricity from resources such as solar, wind, and low-impact hydropower. Intel Corporation, which leads list, is followed by Kohl's Department Stores and Microsoft Corporation. Combined, Top 50 partners use more than 15 billion kWh of green power annually. This equates to avoiding carbon pollution created by electricity use of more than 1.3 million American homes each year.
Femtosecond Laser Scalpel brings precision to laser surgery.

May 1, 2012 Team of researchers from University of Texas at Austin has developed small, flexible endoscopic medical device fitted with femtosecond laser "scalpel" that can remove diseased or damaged tissue while leaving healthy cells untouched. Researchers will present their work at Conference on Lasers and Electro Optics, May 6-11. Thinner than a pencil and less than 1 in. long, device combines mini-microscope with laser capable of generating pulses of light 200 quadrillionths of a second in duration.
NEMA Welcomes Legislation on federal helium policy.

May 1, 2012 NEMA welcomed introduction of Helium Stewardship Act (S 2374), which will modernize and reform federal policy to better secure future supplies of helium for U.S. industry and government uses. Commending Senators Jeff Bingaman (D-NM) and John Barrasso (R-WY) for their leadership, NEMA President and CEO Evan Gaddis noted manufacturers' need for stable supply of refined helium and that "Passage of this legislation will help make that happen."
IPC releases PCB industry results for March 2012.

May 1, 2012 According to North American PCB Statistical Program, rigid PCB shipments were down 12.6% in March 2012 from March 2011, and bookings decreased 2.2% year over year. Book-to-bill ratio in March 2012 improved to 1.05. Compared to March 2011, flexible circuit shipments were down 7.2%, but bookings were up 34.5%. Flexible circuit book-to-bill ratio jumped to 1.18. For rigid and flexible circuits combined, shipments in March 2012 decreased 12.2% from March 2011, while orders booked increased just 0.2%.

In joint effort with North American Electric Reliability Corporation and other utility participants, EPRI has improved capability of OpenDSS program to include simulation of geomagnetically induced currents in network transmission systems.

April 30, 2012 BIO submitted statement to House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Select Revenue Measures for hearing on "Certain Expiring Tax Provisions." As written in his testimony, BIO President and CEO Jim Greenwood noted the "tremendous potential" of emerging technologies in advanced biofuels, renewable chemicals, and biobased products that are ready for commercial deployment, address U.S.-based challenges, but cannot secure needed capital for "first-of-a-kind biorefinery construction" without support.
