June 25, 2012 Announced during 2012 BIO International Convention, Coalition of State Bioscience Institutes (CSBI) has been formed to ensure America's leadership in bioscience innovation. Participating 41 state bioscience organizations aim to deliver industry-led life science education, workforce development, and entrepreneurship programs through nationally coordinated effort. Currently, CSBI is identifying leading state programs for national consideration.
ASTM Standard aims to resolve test result differences.

June 25, 2012 Proposed standard ASTM WK35585, Practice for Data Collection and Resolving Test Result Differences Between Buyer and Seller, will provide rational dispute resolution practice for contractors or material suppliers and agencies when test results from two different laboratories on same product differ. Some procedures described in standard include documentation to determine acceptable quality material, sample chain of custody, and determination of whether data comes from same population.
ASTM Water Committee develops standard for Carbon-14 sampling.

June 25, 2012 Proposed standard ASTM WK36397, Practice for Sampling of C-14 in Gaseous Effluents, is being developed by Subcommittee D19.04 on Methods of Radiochemical Analysis. Standard will help nuclear power plants, as well as other facilities at which fission reactions or spent fuel processing takes place, measure radionuclide carbon-14 in gaseous effluents as required by U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Interested participants are invited to contribute to development of ASTM WK36397.

June 25, 2012 Monthly Confidence Index for Equipment Finance Industry reflects overall market confidence of 48.5 in June, down from the May index of 59.2. Decline reflects growing concern over European debt crisis, U.S. unemployment, and regulatory and political uncertainty. In survey, 8.1% of executives expect improvement in business conditions over next 4 months, down from 17.1% in May. Industry executives differ on current and future outlook depending on market segment they represent.
NTSB Forum aims to improve general aviation search and rescue.

Forum will spend second day discussing emerging technologies and how they may shape future of general aviation search and rescue.
EPA and Partners announce My Air, My Health Challenge.

June 25, 2012 To help researchers, communities, and doctors better understand connection between air quality and person's health, EPA, NIEHS, and Department of HHS Office of the Coordinator for Health Information Technology announced nationwide challenge called My Air, My Health. Responders to challenge will propose designs for sensors that can be worn or carried, and take into account known or plausible link between airborne pollutants and health measurements in certain individuals or communities.

Elevance Renewable Sciences received Small Business Award for producing high-performing, renewable specialty chemicals at advantageous costs, while Codexis received Greener Synthetic Pathways Award for efficient biocatalytic process to manufacture simvastatin.
RIA announces new group of certified robot integrators.

Industrial economic impact, which includes state-by-state analysis, reveals U.S. bioscience industry added jobs during the 2001-2010 period despite losses in overall U.S. total private sector industry employment and other leading knowledge-based industries.
NAM Says Affordable Energy will create jobs.

June 22, 2012 NAM Senior VP of Policy and Government Relations Aric Newhouse said that Domestic Energy and Jobs Act, H.R. 4480, "will increase our nation's energy production, which will lower energy costs and create manufacturing jobs." Newhouse also called for "a real 'all of the above' energy strategy that includes all available energy sources, as well as creating infrastructure projects." Citing 8.2% unemployment, Newhouse said this is a chance to expand domestic energy production and create jobs.
John Horsley applauds USDOT Under Secretary nomination.

June 21, 2012 According to "Biotechnology: Bringing Innovation to Neglected Disease Research and Development," small- to medium-sized biotech companies bring innovation to global health. Findings show that 134 biotechnology companies are participating in neglected disease research and development, which represents participation in 39% of 191 new drugs, vaccines, and diagnostics in development. Report also finds that 64% of all products in development by biotech companies involve partnering.

Marcy Kaptur (D-Ohio) and 16 other original cosponsors for introducing Rural Energy Investment Act of 2012, which would reauthorize Farm Bill Energy Title programs, provide significant mandatory funding, and ensure eligibility for additional biorefineries and products, such as biobased products and renewable chemicals. According to BIO President and CEO Jim Greenwood, Farm Bill energy programs have produced high rate of return for American taxpayers.

Manufacturers urge Senate to halt costly EPA regulation.

June 21, 2012 NAM Senior VP of Policy and Government Relations, Aric Newhouse, issued statement in support of Sen. Jim Inhofe's (R-OK) joint resolution of disapproval, S.J. Res. 37, to use Congressional Review Act to overturn EPA's Utility MACT rule. According to Newhouse, Utility MACT rule, when combined with other power plant regulations, will result in loss of 1.65 million jobs nationwide by 2020 and will increase electricity bills by more than 10% in some large manufacturing regions.
