AAMA Announces Winners of annual scholarship award.

June 28, 2012 During 2012 AAMA Summer Conference, AAMA awarded 7 scholarships to children of employees of AAMA member companies. "AAMA is pleased to acknowledge the outstanding students who have dedicated themselves to their academic and extracurricular endeavors in order to pursue a career in architecture, engineering, and related fields," said AAMA president and CEO Rich Walker. Winners included Jonathan Dorsch, Mathew Blom, Megan Conley, Rachel Hlatky, Griffin Lay, Zachary Lee, Hannah Wascomb.
Construction Materials Prices dip 0.5% in May.

June 28, 2012 Reflecting softness in demand, prices for construction materials dipped 0.5% in May, according to June 13 U.S. Labor Department's Producer Price Index report. However, construction materials prices are 1% higher from 1 year ago. Similarly, nonresidential construction materials prices fell 0.6% last month, but are up 0.6% compared to May 2011. According to ABC Chief Economist Anirban Basu, materials prices are likely to remain stable over months ahead.
ASABE to develop standard for Smart Irrigation Controllers.

June 28, 2012 ASABE has initiated project to develop S627, Standardized Testing Protocol for Weather-based or Soil Moisture-based Landscape Irrigation Control Devices. As demand on water resources and importance of water use efficiency grow, water agencies, regulators, land owners, and landscape managers are relying more heavily on irrigation controllers that use real-time weather or soil-moisture data to determine irrigation needs and scheduling. Document will standardize methods for testing such controllers.

June 28, 2012 ASQ issued 6,500+ certifications in USA in 2011 as part of Manufacturing Institute partnership designed to help fill advanced manufacturing positions. In comment, ASQ CEO Paul Borawski said that "By issuing these certifications, ASQ is helping workers gain the knowledge that will help them find work and fill jobs." ASQ offers 17 certifications, including Certified Quality Technician, Certified Calibration Technician, Certified Quality Engineer, and Certified Quality Inspector.

As first step in bringing said technology to reality in utility environments, EPRI is developing field force data visualization tool on iOS-based device that utilizes Common Information Model (CIM) for messaging. Distinct advantages include reduced cost; facilitated, in-field upgrades; seamless communications switching capabilities; and secure data transfer.

June 27, 2012 BIO released report on significant economic impact of university and non-profit institution patent licensing on U.S. economy. Study documents sizeable return that U.S. taxpayers receive on their investment through Bayh-Dole Act, which enables patenting and commercialization of federally funded university and non-profit institution research. Between 1996 and 2010, impact on U.S. gross industry output is as much as $836 billion and impact on U.S. GDP is as much as $388 billion.

June 27, 2012 SME's highest recognition, Honorary Membership, has been bestowed upon Hiroyuki Yoshikawa for his 50+ years of vision and commitment to manufacturing. Specifically, Yoshikawa was honored for his contributions in international academic, industrial, and government manufacturing engineering communities. Most notable was Yoshikawa's pioneering role in general design theory; many international experts in design engineering have since been using his theory to develop new applications.

June 27, 2012 At AAMA 2012 Summer Conference in Oak Brook, IL, Keynote Speaker Michael Collins said bankruptcies and business closures dropped from 2008-2010, but inched up in 2011. Collins considers it positive sign that many companies are being purchased out of bankruptcy. Rises in household income and increases in power and energy construction are also positive trends, however, future homeowners still have trouble getting mortgages and commercial construction is often delayed due to lack of financing.
AEM Applauds Senate on clean Russia PNTR legislation.

June 27, 2012 AEM President Dennis Slater commended Senators Max Baucus, John Kerry, John Thune, and John McCain on their cooperation to advance efforts to approve Permanent Normal Trade Relations (PNTR) status for Russia. Slater called it "vital that U.S. workers and manufacturers have the same opportunities as other countries to benefit from normal trade relations with the world's 11th largest economy." He continued, saying "Swift and bipartisan action" will benefit U.S. manufacturers.
