May 25, 2012 ISPE continued its mission to provide neutral ground for pharmaceutical industry professionals and regulators to discuss industry issues at ISPE Affiliate meetings in Japan and China. Key topics of Japan Affiliate meeting included international harmonization and effects of globalization, particularly in regards to counterfeiting and drug shortages. China meeting focused on introduction and implementation of China's new GMP guidelines and featured open and frank panel discussions with SFDA.
NAM Comments on Administration's Fracking Regulations .

May 25, 2012 NAM President and CEO Jay Timmons issued statement on proposed Bureau of Land Management hydraulic fracturing regulations on federal lands. According to Timmons, states are already effectively regulating hydraulic fracturing. New federal rules will be confusing and duplicative and will add unnecessary regulatory burden for energy producers. Shale development has a tremendous upside for manufacturers, and NAM urges Department of Interior to carefully reconsider these proposed regulations.
NAM hails court's rejection of ambush elections.

May 25, 2012 NAM President and CEO Jay Timmons issued statement after U.S. District Court invalidated National Labor Relations Board's "ambush elections" rule, which would have expedited unionization election process. According to Timmons, overturning the ambush elections rule is a key victory for job creators and the 12 million men and women working in manufacturing. NAM will continue to lead the way in opposing rules and regulations that stand in the way of job creation and economic growth.
ELFA's MLFI-25 for April 2012 shows overall new business growth.

May 24, 2012 ELFA's Monthly Leasing and Finance Index (MLFI-25) for April shows overall new business volume of $6.1 billion, which is up 20% from same period in 2011 and down 10% from previous month. Year-to-date cumulative new business volume is up 17%, while receivables over 30 days, charge-offs, and credit approvals respectively decreased to 2.7%, 0.6%, and 76%. Also, total headcount for equipment finance companies in April increased 0.7% from the previous month (down 4.1% year over year).
Award for Polymer Research receives record number of entries.

May 24, 2012 Thermoset Resin Formulators Association (TRFA) received 12 entries for its annual Excellence in Polymer Research Award and expects more before final papers are due on May 31, 2012. Winner will be announced on July 27th, and formal presentation of award will occur at TRFA's 10th Anniversary Meeting. Initiated to encourage and recognize advances in science and engineering regarding thermoset polymer industry, award also provides recipient with visibility and exposure in industry.
Energy Tech Emissions Estimates are narrowed by NREL.

May 24, 2012 Meta-analysis of life cycle assessment (LCA) studies, performed by NREL, weighed emissions estimates per kW-hr from raw materials, manufacturing, transportation, operation, and decommissioning to get optimal comparisons. It found that, from cradle to grave, coal-fired energy releases ~20X as much GHG into atmosphere per kW-hr as solar energy. According to NREL Senior Scientist Garvin Heath, methodology used for study provided better precision of study results.
EPA and Department of Commerce announce effort to boost jobs.

May 24, 2012 U.S. EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson and Department of Commerce Secretary John E. Bryson announced efforts to launch environmental technology initiative to help create American jobs in environmental industry. Environmental Technologies Export Initiative builds on President Obama's National Export Initiative, which aims to double U.S. exports by end of 2014 and support millions of American jobs. Web-based tool is scheduled to be launched in fall of this year and hosted on export.gov.
NREL simulates shade conditions in test for solar arrays.

May 24, 2012 NREL's "Photovoltaic Shading Testbed for Module-level Power Electronics" report details repeatable test procedure for simulating shaded operation of PV system and analysis model for converting these measurements into annual performance forecasts. According to test protocol, under heavy shading conditions, use of microinverters instead of typical string inverters can help mitigate impacts of shade by improving system performance by more than 12%.
Steel Committee honors F. Robert Setlak with Award of Merit.

Robert Setlak, metallurgical engineering consultant based in Orland Park, IL, with Award of Merit. He has also chaired several A01 task groups and is member of ASM International.

May 24, 2012 Recently approved standard ASTM E2861, Test Method for Measurement of Beam Divergence and Alignment in Neutron Radiologic Beams, will be used by neutron imaging facilities, particularly those setting up neutron tomography imaging systems. According to one of subcommittee's members responsible for this standard's development, what ASTM E2861 details "will allow facilities to make corrections to their imaging systems if they are not properly aligned."

May 23, 2012 EPA has released final report on alternatives to nonylphenol ethoxylates through Design for the Environment Alternatives Assessment Program. When released into environment, NPE can be persistent and highly toxic to aquatic organisms. In addition to information on availability of 8 safer alternatives to NPE that meet EPA's criteria for safer surfactants, report addresses DfE's hazard evaluation method for surfactants and progress being made in adopting safer surfactants.
HI Expands Membership to all who sell to North American market.

May 23, 2012 ASTM International Committee F38 on Unmanned Aircraft Systems has elected Ted Wierzbanowski, director of UAS airspace integration at AeroVironment Inc. in Monrovia, CA, as its new chairman. Wierzbanowski will lead committee as it focuses on development and approval of small UAS standards in the National Airspace System. A retired U.S. Air Force colonel and experimental test pilot, Wierzbanowski has been involved in advanced aircraft development since the early 1980s.

May 23, 2012 ISO 26324:2012 provides system for assigning unique international identification code to objects for use on digital networks. Standard offers means of identifying entity over Internet, used primarily for sharing with interested user community or managing as intellectual property. In addition, ISO 26324:2012 gives syntax, description, and resolution functional components of digital object identifier system, as well as general principles for creation, registration, and administration of DOI names.
