July 19, 2012 Overseen by ANSI and its Committee on Education, ANSI Student Paper Competition raises awareness of strategic importance of standards and conformance among students at university level. Students of all disciplines enrolled at associate, undergraduate, or graduate level at any U.S. academic institute of higher learning can submit papers of no more than 2,000 words that explore theme of How Standards Facilitate Innovation and Benefit Society.

Papers Invited for biodiesel fuels stability symposium.

July 19, 2012 Papers are invited for ASTM International symposium on Thermal and Oxidative Stability of Biodiesel Fuels. Topics include potential fuel quality and stability issues in storage, use of biodiesel blended fuels after refinery and pipeline distribution, appropriate test methods for defining instability, potential impact of fuel additives on instability, and evidence of fuel instability and associated problems. Preliminary abstract of 250-300 words is due no later than August 9.
IPC and JPCA Printed Electronics Standard defines material categories.

July 19, 2012 IPC and JPCA have released IPC/JPCA-4921, Requirements for Printed Electronics Base Materials (Substrates), which defines terms and establishes basic requirements for categories of ceramic, organic, metal, glass, and other. Standard provides common language for designers, equipment makers, and manufacturers, according to Marc Carter, of IPC. It also provides starting point for IPC's Printed Electronics Initiative to establish infrastructure that will help contribute to industry expansion.

NEMA Calls for Progressive Action concerning Smart Grid support.

Gaddis," can help accelerate problem identificaton, diversionary routing, and resolution when it comes to power outages. Gaddis called for "Practical and progressive action" to broaden use of Smart Grid products, namely tax and regulatory policies geared toward advancing grid investments. NTSB makes safety recommendations to EAA.

July 18, 2012 According to NTSB, Experimental Aircraft Association should identify and apply incentives to encourage owners, builders, and pilots of experimental amateur-built aircraft to complete flight test training. EAA should also work with membership, aircraft kit manufacturers, and avionics manufacturers to develop standards for recording of data in electronic flight displays, engine instruments, or other recording devices to be used in support of flight tests.

July 18, 2012 ASTM E2788, Specification for Use of Expanded Shale, Clay, and Slate (ESCS) as a Mineral Component in the Growing Media and Drainage Layer for Vegetative (Green) Roof Systems, was developed by Subcommittee E60.01. According to E60.01 member Chuck Friedrich, ASTM International standard provides typical gradations as well as physical and chemical properties of rotary kiln expanded lightweight aggregates that can be used as lightweight fill, drainage material, or growing media component.

July 18, 2012 Scheduled for June 24, Masonry 2014 will gather and disseminate latest information on all aspects of innovations in masonry materials, design, specification, construction, maintenance, and rehabilitation. It will emphasize application of ASTM standards to those areas, and their coordination with building codes and international standards. Papers are sought on topics such as anchors and ties, building codes, cements, masonry inspection, mortars, sustainability, veneers, and water penetration.
ANSI Teams with Leavitt Partners on healthcare standards project.

July 18, 2012 Leavitt Partners launched Patient Billing and Collection Standards Project (PBSCP) to promote, accelerate, and coordinate development of voluntary American National Standards for health care billing and collection practices. In comment, ANSI president and CEO S. Joe Bhatia said this decision demonstrates Leavitt Partners' "commitment to an inclusive, consensus-based process." ANSI has been selected by Leavitt Partners to serve as "Trusted Advisor" for PBSCP.

Nominations are due by August 16, 2012 and are for 3-year terms that begin January 1, 2013. PCAC Nominations Committee seeks national experts in fields of personnel certification, accreditation, and policy development. Duties will include creating recommended policies and procedures, determining accreditation status, and providing input regarding operations.

Report also supports tax incentives and insurance to help finance sustainability efforts.

Requirements in this standard are specifically limited to general attributes of tunnel luminaires. Based on state of industry, updates to referenced documents, terminal block, terms, and definitions have been made in this 2012 edition.

July 18, 2012 NEMA has published ANSI/NEMA WC 27500 Standard for Aerospace and Industrial Electrical Cable. In this edition, requirements are included for finished aerospace and industrial electrical cables intended for signal and low-voltage power applications with defined environment or temperature conditions found in commercial aircraft, military aircraft, and high performance vehicles.
