Researchers Improve IR Detectors using SWCNs.

June 11, 2012 Team of researchers from Peking University, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Duke University is harnessing properties of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) to create highly sensitive, uncooled PV IR detectors. "Carbon Nanotube Arrays Based High-Performance Infrared Photodetector" paper, published in Optical Materials Express, describes this new type of detector, which may prove useful for industrial, military, manufacturing, optical communications, and scientific applications.
International CES sees record number of exhibitors.

June 11, 2012 Under signed agreement, EPA and National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) will raise awareness of environmentally friendly products and solutions to address America's environmental challenges. This memorandum of understanding (MOU) provides NASCAR with EPA technical assistance and environmental expertise, using EPA programs such as Design for the Environment and the Economy, Energy, and Environment (E3) framework to help protect Americans' health and the environment.
Microscope uses light to image flow of individual blood cells.

June 11, 2012 Developed by team of researchers in Israel, optical microscope can reveal same information as traditional blood test in real-time by shining light through the skin, without fluorescent dyes. Portable device relies on spectrally encoded confocal microscopy, which creates images by splitting light beam into its constituent colors. By eliminating long wait-time for blood test results, microscope might help spotlight warning signs before patient develops severe medical problems.
NREL to engineer smart homes.

June 11, 2012 Research engineers at NREL are working on a "smart" home that will communicate with electricity grid to know when power is cheap, tell appliances when to turn on or off, and even know when renewable energy resources are available to offset peak demand. NREL is leveraging 2 laboratories to make the smart home a reality - the soon-to-be-built Smart Power Laboratory, which is part of the Energy Systems Integration Facility, and the Automated Home Energy Management Laboratory.
ASABE, ICC Collaborate on new landscape irrigation standard.

June 11, 2012 American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) and International Code Council (ICC) intend to jointly develop ANSI standard: ASABE/ICC Landscape Irrigation Sprinkler and Emitter Standard. In establishing requirements for landscape sprinklers and emitters, standard will address design, performance, and uniform testing and assessment methods for such devices. Ultimately, this will enhance performance of entire irrigation system and promote water conservation.

Used to test propensity of athletic eye and face protection to fog during sporting event, standard would assess complete eye/face protection device (eyewear and frames) in as-worn position under variety of environmental conditions as to simulate athletic event. All interested parties are invited to take part.

Through planning and education process provided in this proposed standard, first responders and community will become more acutely aware of concerns and issues of people with disabilities in planning for and surviving a disaster.

Anyone preparing EPD or LCA will be able to use standard to examine total amount of reserves and resources, amount extracted annually, amount annually recycled, and amount annually displaced by substitutes.
