Air Quality Committee presents Moyer D. Thomas Award.

July 24, 2012 ASTM International Committee D22 on Air Quality presented Moyer D. Thomas Award to Kevin Ashley, Ph.D., for his contributions to standardization of sampling and analysis of atmospheres. ASTM International member since 1991, Ashley works on multiple D22 subcommittees and is chairman of D22.04 on Workplace Air Quality. ASTM fellow is also member of multiple committees, has authored 110+ scientific publications, and holds three U.S. patents.

July 23, 2012 With total exhibition area of 23,000 m, LASER World of PHOTONICS CHINA 2012 was divided into several exhibit segments such as Laser Systems for Production Engineering, Laser and Optronics, Imaging and Optical Metrology, Optics and Optical Manufacturing. According to figures, 475 exhibitors from 19 countries and districts exhibited at tradeshow, an increase of 31.6% compared with 2011. Number of professional visitors exceeded expectation and reached 34,326, a 19% growth over last year.
IPC to Launch Educational Campaign on ITAR and PCBs.

July 23, 2012 On July 25, IPC will launch its educational campaign - Follow the Law, Protect the Board - to raise awareness and compliance with federal regulations on export of PCBs designed for International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) controlled equipment. Campaign kick-off meeting will take place in Washington, D.C., and IPC will also unveil white paper, Applicability of U.S. Defense Trade Controls to Printed Boards, authored by Peter Lichtenbaum.

July 23, 2012 Hydraulic Institute (HI) updated 1997 edition of ANSI/HI standard on allowable operating region for centrifugal and vertical pumps and published ANSI/HI 9.6.3 - 2012 Rotodynamic (Centrifugal and Vertical) Pumps - Guideline for Allowable Operating Region. Updated guideline discusses effects of operation at flow rates greater or less than flow rate at best efficiency point. It also defines preferred operating region and allowable operating region for rotodynamic pump types.
NEMA urges action on pending "fiscal cliff".

July 23, 2012 NEMA called on Congress and White House to rise above partisanship to find common ground to avoid "fiscal cliff" threatening nation's economy, solvency, defense, and vital operations. The "fiscal cliff" is a perfect storm of tax, spending, and debt deadlines at the end of 2012. Private economists and bipartisan Congressional Budget Office have warned that simultaneous tax increases and spending cuts at beginning of 2013 could push economy back into recession.

July 20, 2012 NASA partner Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX) has completed design review of crewed version of its Dragon spacecraft. Concept baseline review presented NASA with primary and secondary design elements of Dragon capsule, intended to carry astronauts into low Earth orbit. Conducted at company headquarters, June 14 review provided details on launch pads modification, docking capabilities, weight, power requirements, living arrangements, and prospective ground landing sites/techniques.

July 20, 2012 Space Exploration Technologies has completed design review of the crewed version of its Dragon spacecraft designed to carry astronauts into low Earth orbit. SpaceX provided details about each phase of potential crewed mission, including how company plans to modify its launch pads to support such missions, Dragon's docking capabilities, weight and power requirements for spacecraft, and prospective ground landing sites and techniques.
Obama Administration Report addresses Everglades restoration.

July 20, 2012 Obama Administration released report outlining historic Federal investments and progress made in Everglades restoration under leadership of President Obama, and announced $80 million in additional funding to support farmers and ranchers who voluntarily conserve wetlands on agricultural land in Northern Everglades Watershed. Administration has invested $1.5 billion in Everglades projects and initiatives, including nearly $900 million for projects that will restore water flow and essential habitat.

July 20, 2012 Second ASTM International D22 Symposium on Silica and Associated Respirable Mineral Particles will held October 25-26, 2012, in Atlanta, GA. It will provide update on progress towards assessing airborne respirable crystalline silica (RCS) exposure for compliance with current limit values. Approaches to accurately sample and evaluate workplace concentrations of RCS will be discussed. Online registration opens 8 weeks prior to symposium date, and closes on October 17.
RI Law Requires Children's Jewelry to conform to ASTM standard.

July 20, 2012 Rhode Island now requires children's jewelry manufactured after December 18, 2012 to conform to requirements of ASTM standard F2923-11. According to Comprehensive Children's Jewelry Safety Act, "children's jewelry means jewelry designed or intended primarily for use by children 12 years old or younger, to be worn as an item of personal ornamentation." Approved in 2011, ASTM F2923 establishes requirements and test methods for specified elements and mechanical hazards in children's jewelry.

Main objective of alliance is to accelerate progress toward shared solar research and development goals as well as to ensure sustainable long-term use of solar energy.

July 19, 2012 ANSI and IREC announced that CalCERTS, CleanTech Education, Building Science Institute, and Midwest Renewable Energy Association are participating in accreditation program for energy efficiency and renewable energy. Accreditations will be announced by end of August, while program may be reopened for general applications in late 2012. Companies' programs are being evaluated against IREC Standard 14732: 2012, General Requirements for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Certificate Programs.

July 19, 2012 Papers are invited for ASTM International symposium on Thermal and Oxidative Stability of Biodiesel Fuels. Topics include potential fuel quality and stability issues in storage, use of biodiesel blended fuels after refinery and pipeline distribution, appropriate test methods for defining instability, potential impact of fuel additives on instability, and evidence of fuel instability and associated problems. Preliminary abstract of 250-300 words is due no later than August 9.
