EPA Identifies Substitutes for toxic flame retardant chemical.

August 10, 2012 To identify possible substitutes for decabromodiphenyl ether (decaBDE), U.S. EPA released draft report on alternatives. This assessment, developed with public participation under EPA's Design for the Environment (DfE) program, profiles environmental and human health hazards on 30 alternatives to decaBDE. In addition, EPA will continue to work with manufacturers to investigate both chemical and non-chemical alternatives for flame retardants.

ANSI seeks U.S. experts to serve on U.S. Virtual Technical Advisory Group to JWG for revision of ISO/IEC Guide 51, which provides standards writers with guidelines for inclusion of safety aspects when developing and discussing standards. Also, ANSI is soliciting comments on second Committee Draft consultation on revision of ISO/IEC Guide 51.

August 7, 2012 BIO president and CEO Jim Greenwood has made his statement regarding letter sent by 156 Members of the House of Representatives to EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson, where they urged EPA to reduce federal Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS). After saying "RFS is working" and "setting a clear path for U.S. energy security, reduced reliance on foreign oil, and a cleaner, healthier environment," Greenwood urged caution about "rushing to make long-term changes to this policy."

August 6, 2012 Proposed standard ASTM WK38070, Practice for Sample Preparation and Conditioning with Additives, is being developed by ASTM International Committee D04 on Road and Paving Materials. According to D04.20 subcommittee chairman Richard Steger, proposed practice would ensure mixtures produced in lab will match performance of materials placed in field. Also, performance of mixtures using such additives will be predictable during bituminous mixture design and liquid asphalt binder formulation stage.

ASTM WK38128, Guide for Identification, Packaging, Handling, Storage and Deployment of Fabricated Geomembrane Panels, will provide guidance for installation and use of factory fabricated geomembrane panels at job sites. It will also provide definitions for commonly used terms such as fabricated panel, accordion-folded panel, and fabricator.
