July 27, 2012 Results of "live burn" studies and laboratory tests conducted by NIST fire researchers helped to prompt safety alert warning of heat-caused damage to facepiece lenses on firefighter self-contained breathing apparatus, a factor implicated in several first-responder fatalities and injuries. Issued by NFPA, alert notes that fires in modern buildings and houses burn hotter and faster than those in older structures, resulting in temperatures high enough to cause lens damage.

July 27, 2012 White House announced 3 researchers at NIST will receive 2011 Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE). Jayne Billmayer Morrow is being honored for pioneering research on properties of microbial systems; Ian Coddington will be recognized for developing rapid, low-cost, spectroscopic measurement tools; and Frank W. DelRio will be honored for pioneering research in measuring mechanical properties of microelectronic and MEMS/NEMS as well as volunteer work.

July 27, 2012 In state-of-the-art, high-performance computing and data access facility called NASA Earth Exchange (NEX), NASA will open new chapter of discovery using enhanced Landsat Earth-observing data. Virtual laboratory will allow scientists to tackle global Earth science challenges with high-resolution satellite observations. Facility boasts large collection of global data sets and analysis tools, including surface weather records, topography, soils, land cover, and global climate simulations.

July 27, 2012 ASTM International Subcommittee E06.77 on High-Rise Building External Evacuation Devices seeks interested parties to join upcoming review of ASTM E2513, Specification for Multi-Story Building External Evacuation Platform Rescue Systems. Mechanical, electrical, and fire safety engineers as well as emergency responder personnel are encouraged to join E06.77 in its upcoming work on E2513, which is intended to be reapproved this year, and other standards developing activities.

Peryam Award from ASTM International Committee E18 on Sensory Evaluation of Materials and Products. Award recognizes outstanding professionals in the applied sensory science field. A member of ASTM International since 1987, Goldman served a term as E18 chairman from 2002-2004 and currently chairs E18.91, Standing Committee on Subcommittees and Task Groups.
ISO Technical Committee to hold meeting on HR in Australia.

July 27, 2012 ISO Technical Committee, working on international human resource (HR) standards, will hold its second plenary meeting on September 24-25 in Melbourne, Australia. With focus on adopting uniform standards in such areas as terminology, measurement, and governance, ISO TC 260 will explore worldwide HR practices. ANSI serves as Secretariat for ISO TC 260, and meeting will be hosted by Standards Australia (SA). As many as 50 representatives from array of countries are expected to attend.

July 27, 2012 European Commission released document detailing Frequently Asked Questions concerning EU's Restrictions on Hazardous Substances Directive 2001/65/EU. RoHS 2 is intended to simplify directive while providing legal clarity and improving enforceability of directive's restrictions on hazardous materials. FAQ document will assist governments, businesses, and other organizations in their analysis of provisions of RoHS 2 to ensure full compliance with new requirements.
ELFA's MILFI-25 for June 2012 shows new business growth.

July 27, 2012 Reporting economic activity for $628 billion equipment finance sector in June 2012, ELFA's Monthly Leasing and Finance Index (MLFI-25) shows overall new business at $8 billion. This is up 9.5% from same period in 2011, 29% from previous month, and 14.5% year-to-date. Receivables over 30 days were down from May and same period in 2011, while charge-offs were up from May and down compared to 2011. Credit approvals increased to 78.7% from 78.3% in May.

Filter is gravity sintered to density of 5.1-5.2 g/cm³. Special mold design eliminates most secondary operations on the part, except for deburring the edge.

EPA Funding will bolster green infrastructure for communities.

July 26, 2012 As announced EPA's Nancy Stoner, U.S. EPA will provide $950,000 to help 17 communities expand green infrastructure. Use of vegetation and soil to manage rainwater where it falls keeps polluted stormwater from entering sewer systems and waterways in local communities. Funding is intended to increase incorporation of green infrastructure into stormwater management programs, protect water quality, and provide community benefits such as job creation and neighborhood revitalization.

July 26, 2012 Following call for Congress to act on pending "fiscal cliff," NEMA underscored fact that USA faces risks by not acting expeditiously. Nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) projected fiscal cliff will cause economy to dip into recession in 2013 but also that U.S. economy would add two million new jobs and GDP would grow 4.4% in 2013 alone if all issues were resolved. "It is time for our government to come together for America," said NEMA President and CEO Evan R. Gaddis.
