EPA Awards Grants for drinking water treatment methods.

September 10, 2012 U.S. EPA announced almost $1.5 million in funding to 3 universities - University of Nevada, Reno; University of Florida, Gainesville and University of South Florida, Tampa; and Clarkson University, Potsdam, NY - for development of sustainable drinking water treatment methods. Funded through EPA Science to Achieve Results (STAR) program grants are intended to provide innovative treatment methods to protect people's health by keeping harmful contaminants out of drinking water.
EPA and Green Sports Alliance address environmental challenges.

September 10, 2012 EPA signed Memorandum of Understanding with Green Sports Alliance to address environmental challenges faced by sports venues, organizations, and teams. Agreement will facilitate collaboration on issues such as waste management, water and energy conservation, and sustainability for teams and stadiums/sporting venues. EPA has also agreed to share tools like the Energy Star Portfolio Manager, which allows building owners to track and assess energy and water consumption.
ANSI-IREC Program issues first set of accreditations.

September 7, 2012 Three certificate-awarding entities have been accredited under ANSI-IREC pilot program for personnel training/education programs within energy efficiency and renewable energy industries. They include CalCERTS for training of Home Energy Rating System raters; CleanTech Education for training focused on solar photovoltaics and heating, energy efficiency, wind energy, green IT, and smart grid; and Midwest Renewable Energy Association, providing training related to renewable energy and energy efficiency.
Workshop to explore flexible printed electronics metrology.

September 7, 2012 On September 12-13, 2012, NIST and FlexTech Alliance will hold workshop on "Flexible Printed Electronics Metrology - The Status and Needs". Workshop will highlight growing need for reliable measurement tools to support rapidly developing electronics field, which uses organic semiconductors and other new materials. Manufacturers of flexible electronics as well as material, tool, and substrate producers will discuss requirements for improving production quality and yield.
NIST SBIR Awards have been given to 12 companies.

September 7, 2012 As announced by NIST, 12 U.S. businesses received nearly $2 million in Phase I and Phase II Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) awards in order to help develop technologies that could lead to commercial and public benefit. SBIR program's goal is for companies to commercialize their technologies, where appropriate, in Phase III. NIST will provide awardees with technical and direct assistance and direct them to additional resources through Hollings Manufacturing Extension Partnership.
Flexible Barrier Packaging Committee to meet in Spain in 2012.

September 7, 2012 Scheduled for September 26-27 in Barcelona, next meeting of ASTM International Committee F02 on Flexible Barrier Packaging will let participants contribute to development and revision of standards important to flexible barrier packaging use and evaluation. Highlights will include review of results of several recently completed and ongoing interlaboratory studies as well as industry experts who will speak on range of diverse, related topics.
NEMA Publication addresses arc welding energy consumption.

September 7, 2012 NEMA has published NEMA EW 9 Arc Welding Power Sources-Energy Consumption Testing and Labeling. NEMA EW 9-2012 provides necessary guidance for manufacturers and importers of arc welding power source equipment to meet in uniform manner the energy consumption reporting requirements of the Mexican Law for Sustainable Energy Use, published in the Official Gazette of Federation, on November 28, 2008, article 23.
NEMA taps Paul Molitor for SGIP transition team.

September 7, 2012 NEMA announced that it will dedicate Paul Molitor as Interim Executive Director of newly reorganized Smart Grid Interoperability Panel. In this role, Mr. Molitor will lead transition effort from SGIP government-run organization, to SGIP 2.0 that is industry led. Molitor is Assistant VP of Strategic Initiatives for NEMA and former Plenary Secretary of SGIP, which was established under Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 to coordinate interoperability of Smart Grid devices and systems.
EPRI, Newton Labs work to profile used nuclear fuel assemblies.

September 7, 2012 Electric Power Research Institute, Inc. (EPRI) and Newton Research Labs, Inc. have teamed together to develop underwater laser scanning tool to measure individual alignment profile of used nuclear fuel assemblies. First successful demonstration of said technology was recently completed, and second phase of development/deployment will be announced in near future. After system is validated, it will be extended to also enable measurement of PWR fuel assemblies.

September 7, 2012 As requested by Governors, EPA exercised its authority under Clean Air Act to temporarily waive certain federal clean gasoline requirements for gasoline sold and distributed in LA, MI, AL, GA, FL, TN, SC, and NC due to disruption in supply of fuel from Gulf-area refineries following Hurricane Isaac. Waiver granted by EPA in coordination with Department of Energy (DOE) will help ensure adequate supply of gasoline in impacted states until normal supply can be restored.

NREL Summer Interns acquire lab experience.

September 7, 2012 For 10 weeks every summer, college students from across the country migrate to Golden, Colorado, to work side-by-side with top researchers at NREL, the only national laboratory solely focused on renewable energy and energy efficiency research and development. This summer, there were 4 different programs and 59 interns, including, for the first time, community college students. The largest program was the Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship.

September 7, 2012 NREL selected HP and Intel to provide HPC system dedicated to energy systems integration, renewable energy research, and energy efficiency technologies. Set to reside at Energy Systems Integration Facility (ESIF) under construction on Golden, CO campus, $10 million HPC system will expand modeling and simulation capabilities for advancing materials research and developing deeper understanding of biological and chemical processes as well as research into integrated energy systems.

September 7, 2012 U.S. EPA has opened registration for student teams from colleges and universities across the country to participate in Campus RainWorks Challenge, through which teams will compete to develop innovative approaches to stormwater management. First annual competition will help raise awareness of green design and planning approaches at colleges and universities, and train next generation of landscape architects, planners, and engineers in green infrastructure principles and design.

Safety Recommendation will prevent taxiing airplane collisions.

September 6, 2012 NTSB recommended that FAA require large airplanes to be equipped with anti-ground collision aid, such as on-board external-mounted camera system, to provide pilots with clear view of plane's wingtips while taxiing. This would ensure clearance from other aircraft, vehicles, and obstacles while eliminating need for pilot to extend his or her head out of open cockpit window to see airplane's wingtips. NTSB made same recommendation to European Aviation Safety Agency.
