September 20, 2012 Revised standard, ASAE S301.5, Agricultural equipment – Front loaders – Dimensional and operating ratings, was previously titled Front-End Agricultural Loader Ratings. Other changes include an update of a key reference and clarification of bucket installation requirements. ASABE members with standards access and those with site-license privileges can access full-text via electronic download on the ASABE online Technical Library at elibrary.asabe.org/.
Fieldbus Foundation registers first isolated device couplers.

September 19, 2012 Fieldbus Foundation announced registration of the first isolated device couplers based on FOUNDATION H1 (31.25 kbit/s) device coupler test specification. Devices from MTL and R. Stahl successfully completed registration process. As part of FOUNDATION fieldbus infrastructure, isolated device couplers are installed where fieldbus trunk is connected to device spurs. Units provide isolated, conditioned power to fieldbus devices and protect against short circuits caused by excess current in spur.

September 19, 2012 Delegation from Certification and Accreditation Administration of China (CNCA), led by CNCA chief engineer Liu Weijun, visited Washington, DC on June 13 for meetings with U.S. government and private sector organizations. During this visit, ANSI and CNCA celebrated launch of additional conformity assessment information on StandardsPortal. New information will provide additional resources to stakeholders in both countries about certification and accreditation programs used in China.

September 19, 2012 Reducing the Risk of Fire in Buildings and Communities: A Strategic Roadmap to Guide and Prioritize Research provides plan to reduce preventable fires as well as associated costs and loss of life by 1/3 in USA over next 20 years. Under this roadmap, efforts to combat fire problem would focus attention and resources on reduction of fire hazards in buildings; advancement of technologies for fighting fires; and fire risk reduction in communities near forests and regions known as wildlands.

September 18, 2012 U.S. EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson and Canada’s Minister of the Environment Peter Kent signed amended Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement in Washington, D.C. Revised agreement will facilitate action on threats to Great Lakes water quality and includes strengthened measures to anticipate as well as prevent ecological harm. New provisions address aquatic invasive species, habitat degradation, and effects of climate change as well as threats to people’s health in Great Lakes Basin.
NTSB Issues 2 Urgent Safety Recommendations to FAA.

September 18, 2012 NTSB recommended FAA issue airworthiness directive to require, before further flight, immediate ultrasonic inspection of fan midshaft in all GEnx-1B and -2B engines that have not undergone inspection. NTSB recommended FAA require repetitive inspections of fan midshaft at sufficiently short interval that would permit multiple inspections and detection of crack before it could reach critical length and fan midshaft fractures.
Scotts Miracle-Gro Fined, Penalized for FIFRA violations.

September 18, 2012 Scotts Miracle-Gro Company was sentenced in federal district court in Columbus, OH to pay $4 million fine and perform community service for 11 criminal violations of Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA). In separate civil agreement with U.S. EPA, Scotts agreed to pay more than $6 million in penalties and spend $2 million on environmental projects intended to resolve additional civil pesticide violations.

September 17, 2012 Benjamin Petersen, postdoctoral appointee at Sandia National Laboratories, was honored with Russell S. Springer Award during SAE 2012 World Congress. Award recognizes author of outstanding technical paper presented at an SAE International meeting or any of its sections and is published in SAE International literature in the year for which the recipient is selected. Petersen is the author or co-author of 17 papers, including 12 SAE International technical papers and 4 journal articles.
NEMA Standard addresses verification testing of lamps.

September 17, 2012 NEMA has published NEMA LSD 63 Measurement Methods and Performance Variation for Verification Testing of General Purpose Lamps and Systems. Standard establishes variations that can be expected when independent verification testing, generally based on small samples of lamps or ballasts, is performed to estimate product performance characteristics and for comparison to manufacturer’s ratings.
Ray LaHood announces $9.6 million grant for Orlando Airport.

September 14, 2012 U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announced $9.6 million grant to rehabilitate runway and taxiway and to purchase aircraft rescue and fire fighting vehicle for Orlando International Airport. Runway 18R/36L rehabilitation project will extend useful life of pavement and provide for realignment and rehabilitation of Taxiway A, which is needed to meet FAA design standards. Aircraft rescue and fire fighting vehicle will replace current vehicle, which is too expensive to maintain.
Ray LaHood announces grant for Portland-Hillsboro Airport.

September 14, 2012 U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announced $6.9 million federal grant for runway and taxiway improvements at Portland-Hillsboro Airport. This grant from FAA Airport Improvement Program will fund replacement of 20 year old pavement on Runway 2/20, and will also include moving a runway threshold to provide pilots with better views of intersecting runway. Taxiway C that runs parallel to runway will also be reconstructed and moved further from runway to enhance safety.
BIO Summit to address algae's role in replacing fossil fuels.

September 14, 2012 Scheduled for Oct 9-12, BIO 2012 Pacific Rim Summit on Industrial Biotechnology and Bioenergy will feature 2 breakout sessions focusing on commercial applications for algae and advances in algal biomass production and processing. Algae-produced oils hold potential for replacing fossil fuel resources in many products. Algae derived starches, oils, and proteins can be used in food, animal feed, or nutrition supplements, and fatty acids from algae can be used in diesel biofuels as well.

Proposed papers and panels should address any in a range of topics, including biotechnology for climate change, advanced biofuels, energy from algae, microbial fuel cells, biopolymers, and renewable and chemical platforms, to name a few. 
Manufacturing Technology Orders slow in July, positive for year.

September 13, 2012 Based on reports by companies participating in USMTO program, U.S. manufacturing technology orders totaled $449.69 million in July 2012. This number is down 2.3% from June and 10.5% compared with July 2011. With year-to-date total of $3,132.23 million, 2012 is up 5.4% compared with 2011. AMT President Douglas K. Woods pointed out typical order slow down cycle for July/August and expected order activity to "come back strong" in months following IMTS, which has 90,000+ registrants.

While Board Members will serve January 1, 2013 to December 31, 2016, Executive Committee members will serve one year terms from January 1 to December 31, 2013.
