June 26, 2012 NASA's Langley Research Center and Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC) Space Systems in Louisville, CO joined forces to update Langley's HL-20 lifting body vehicle design into Dream Chaser® orbital crew vehicle, which is being developed as part of NASA's Commercial Crew Development program. Mark Sirangelo, Corporate VP and head of Sierra Nevada Space Systems, visited NASA Langley in Hampton, VA as part of this commemoration and joint corporate/government executive session on said program.
2012 Biotech Humanitarian Award honors Dr. Margaret Foti.

June 26, 2012 Margaret Foti, Ph.D., M.D. (h.c.), CEO of the American Association for Cancer Research, has been selected as Honoree for 2012 Biotech Humanitarian Award for leadership in cancer research and advocacy. Specifically, BIO President and CEO Jim Greenwood cited Foti's "tireless efforts to improve cancer research and build an enhanced network of cancer researchers through the American Association for Cancer Research." During Foti's tenure as AACR CEO, membership grew to 34,000+ members.

June 26, 2012 Drawing 16,505 industry leaders from 49 states and 65 countries, 2012 BIO International Convention hosted record 25,291 partnering meetings and highlighted speakers who addressed critical global challenges as well as top issues in biotechnology. BIO president and CEO Jim Greenwood noted that the majority of attendees had a positive outlook for the future of biotechnology. Greenwood also predicted effects from this week will help drive global biotechnology community and economic growth.

Industry Statistics reveal increasing demand for aluminum.

June 25, 2012 Preliminary estimates of total aluminum demand in U.S. and Canada for first quarter of 2012 totaled 5.8 million pounds, a 7.5% increase over first quarter of 2011. Compared to April 2011, net new orders of mill products reported by domestic producers increased 3.7%. Significant increase was seen in demand for semi-fabricated or mill products, which increased 7.9% over first quarter of 2011. In addition, domestic aluminum production increased slightly in April after slipping in January and February.
NEMA Urges Senate to act on Shaheen-Portman energy legislation.

June 25, 2012 In its letter to all Senate offices, NEMA - along with other manufacturers, trade associations, and affected parties - encouraged U.S. Senate to take up Energy Savings and Industrial Competitiveness Act of 2011 (S 1000). NEMA President and CEO Evan Gaddis noted bi-partisan support behind S 1000 and said it "provides sensible energy solutions for our country, saves energy, and creates jobs." Gaddis continued, urging Senate to bring S 1000 to floor as soon as possible for voting and passage.

Standard will help nuclear power plants, as well as other facilities at which fission reactions or spent fuel processing takes place, measure radionuclide carbon-14 in gaseous effluents as required by U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Interested participants are invited to contribute to development of ASTM WK36397.
