EPA opens registration for Campus RainWorks Challenge.

September 7, 2012 U.S. EPA has opened registration for student teams from colleges and universities across the country to participate in Campus RainWorks Challenge, through which teams will compete to develop innovative approaches to stormwater management. First annual competition will help raise awareness of green design and planning approaches at colleges and universities, and train next generation of landscape architects, planners, and engineers in green infrastructure principles and design.
Open Session of ISO GA to focus on innovation, sustainability.

September 7, 2012 ANSI invites interested parties to attend Open Session on innovation, sustainable development, and standards that will take place in San Diego, CA on September 20. Part of 2012 ISO General Assembly (GA), event will feature keynote speakers Denise Naguib as well as Phil McKinney and enable stakeholders to discuss current issues. Specific technologies that will be discussed are to include wireless technology in healthcare, smart cities, and smart buildings.

Safety Recommendation will prevent taxiing airplane collisions.

September 6, 2012 NTSB recommended that FAA require large airplanes to be equipped with anti-ground collision aid, such as on-board external-mounted camera system, to provide pilots with clear view of plane's wingtips while taxiing. This would ensure clearance from other aircraft, vehicles, and obstacles while eliminating need for pilot to extend his or her head out of open cockpit window to see airplane's wingtips. NTSB made same recommendation to European Aviation Safety Agency.

September 5, 2012 Brian Wade, senior technician at CAMtek (Bloomington, IL) took first place in second annual hand soldering competition at IPC Midwest Conference and Exhibition. Second place went to Alyssia Demetropoulos of Pro-Active Engineering (Sun Prairie, WI) and third-place went to Sue Fischer of Plexus (Appleton, WI). Points were awarded based on soldering in accordance with IPC-A-610E Class 3 criteria, speed at which assembly was produced, and overall functionality of assembly.

September 5, 2012 Scheduled for Sept 18 in Boxborough, MA, Northeast Regional Solder Skills Competition will pit expert technicians against each other to build functional electronics assembly within 30-min time limit. Judges will evaluate soldering assemblies in accordance with IPC-A-610E Class 3 criteria, cleanliness, and technique. Cash prizes will be awarded to top 3 finalists, and first place winner will earn complimentary airfare, hotel stay, and entrance into international grand championship at IPC APEX EXPOŽ.

September 4, 2012 According to IPC's North American PCB Statistical Program, rigid PCB shipments were down 4.2% in July 2012 from July 2011, and bookings decreased 5.7% year over year. Book-to-bill ratio registered 1.00, exactly at parity. Flexible circuit shipments in July 2012 were up 15.4%, while bookings were down 35.0% compared to July 2011, and book-to-bill ratio dipped to 1.03. For rigid PCBs and flexible circuits combined, shipments in July 2012 decreased 2.6% and orders booked decreased 8.4% from July 2011.

September 4, 2012 According to Harris Interactive online poll released on behalf of Aerospace Industries Association, 80% of likely voters in Florida, Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Missouri want leaders in Washington DC to find alternative to sequestration budget cuts before November elections take place. Poll found that concern over sequestration cuts across age, party, race, and regional lines. In addition, 77% of likely voters said they were aware of this issue prior to taking poll.

September 4, 2012 Summer 2012 edition of Electronics Industries Market Data Update shows leading indicators in North America pointing to stalled economic growth in 2Q but resumption of modest growth in second half of 2012. Year-over-year PCB and semiconductor sales growth rates in North America remained negative in 2Q 2012, while EMS, wet chemistry, and solder were positive. North American PCB book-to-bill ratio remained above parity in 2Q, and sales growth in electronics supply chain slowed globally.

September 4, 2012 NEMA has published NEMA IIC 1 v02 Digital Imaging and Communications in Security Information Object Definitions. Revised standard maintains extensible, interoperable data format that enables integration of security screening technologies across multiple vendor platforms. Standard now includes Advanced Imaging Technology or AIT, which is used to examine passengers at airports, and a more complete definition of one type of Threat Detection Report, known as Operator.

September 4, 2012 OSA's open-access journal, Biomedical Optics Express, discusses new optical diagnostic tool created by Columbia University researchers that may make it easier to diagnose and monitor peripheral arterial disease, a serious complication of diabetes. Noninvasive imaging technique - known as dynamic diffuse optical tomography imaging - uses near-infrared light to map concentration of hemoglobin in body's tissue. This mapping can reveal how effectively blood is flowing to patients' hands and feet.
