Manufacturing Innovation Consortium announced by White House.

August 23, 2012 White House, on August 15, 2012, announced launch of public-private institute for manufacturing innovation in Youngstown, OH. This new partnership, National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute (NAMII), includes manufacturing firms, universities, community colleges, and nonprofit organizations from Ohio-Pennsylvania-West Virginia Tech Belt. Consortium will receive initial $30 million in federal funding that will be matched by $40 million from consortium itself.

NTSB Safety Recommendations look at fatigue management.

August 23, 2012 Supplementing reiterations, NTSB issued 3 new safety recommendations to Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. These included H-12-29, for establishing ongoing program to monitor, evaluate, report on, and continuously improve fatigue management programs; H-12-30, for incorporating scientifically based fatigue mitigation strategies into hours-of-service regulations; and H-12-30, for reviewing each new entrant motor carrier structured process as component of new entrant safety audits.
OFAC issues guidance on international standards development.

August 23, 2012 Office of Foreign Assets Control issued guidance regarding applicability of U.S. sanctions regulations to international standards development activities through ISO and IEC. According to OFAC, standards development activities either fall within "informational materials" exemption to sanctions regulations, or are authorized under general license which allows for collaboration on creation and enhancement of written publications, such as international standards.
White House Roundtable looks to help vets via IT credentialing.

August 23, 2012 To help mitigate skills gap in IT industry and foster employment opportunity for USA veterans, White House held Roundtable on Military Credentialing and Information Technology on July 16, 2012. ANSI senior director for personnel credentialing accreditation programs Roy Swift, who was invited to participate, expressed eagerness regarding "ongoing cooperation between the military and the private-sector credentialing world" to establish necessary partnerships.

August 23, 2012 According to August 2012 Monthly Confidence Index, confidence in equipment finance market is 50.2, down from July index of 51.5, reflecting ongoing industry concerns over economic, regulatory, and political uncertainty. When asked to assess their business conditions over next 4 months, 6.3% of executives said they believe business conditions will improve, while 78.1% of respondents believe business conditions will remain the same, and 15.6% believe business conditions will worsen.
David Styers Jr. receives Copper Club Award.

August 22, 2012 David Styers Jr., VP of technical product and processes at Wolverine Tube Inc. in Decatur, AL, has received Copper Club Award from ASTM International Committee B05 on Copper and Copper Alloys. Established in 1979, award is presented to individuals who have done the most to advance standardization of copper and copper alloys. Styers has been a member of Committee B05 since 1992. He currently serves as first vice chairman of main committee and chairs Subcommittee B05.94 on Strategic Planning.
Sinclair Oil Penalty will resolve 2008 consent decree violations.

August 22, 2012 U.S. EPA and U.S. Department of Justice announced settlement with 2 subsidiaries of Sinclair Oil Corporation to resolve alleged violations of air pollution limits established in 2008 consent decree at Casper and Sinclair, WY refineries. Stipulated penalties to be paid total $3,844,000, and required spending for additional pollution control equipment and other projects will total ~$10.5 million. Settlement also requires reductions of NOx, SO2, and particulate matter emissions.

August 20, 2012 According to August 2012 PMA Business Conditions Report, metalforming companies expect slight improvement in business conditions during next 3 months. Report shows that 23% of participants anticipate economic activity will improve, while 29% anticipate increase in orders compared to 26% in July. Average daily shipping levels continued to decline in August. Only 17% of participants report that shipping levels are above levels of 3 months ago, while 40% report decrease in shipping levels.

August 20, 2012 Renewable Fuel Standard provides fundamental foundation driving private investment in America's advanced biofuels industry. BIO responded to formal requests by Gov. Bev Perdue (D-N.C.) and Gov. Mike Beebe (D-Ark.) that the EPA waive the Renewable Fuel Standard for 2012. According to Brent Erickson, executive VP of BIO's Industrial and Environmental Section, RFS provides multiple options to fuel distributors obligated to make alternatives to foreign oil available to U.S. consumers.
