July 12, 2012 Peter Lane received ASTM International Award of Merit and title of fellow from Committee F20 on Hazardous Substances and Oil Spill Response. ASTM International member since 1979, Lane is serving his third term as chairman of Committee F20 and acts as secretary of Subcommittee F20.11 on Control and Chair of F20.94 on Long Range Planning and Coordination. Lane played key role in development of several F20 standards related to oil spill containment booms.

Mario, forensic scientist IV, drug chemistry section, at Suffolk County Crime Laboratory in Hauppauge, NY, has received ASTM International Award of Merit and title of fellow from Committee E30 on Forensic Sciences. Mario is chairman of Subcommittee E30.92 on Terminology and has been ASTM Committee E30 representative to Scientific Working Group for the Analysis of Seized Drugs since 1998. A member of ASTM since 1996, he received Committee E30 Distinguished Service Award in 2001.
Halogen A-Line Lamp Index shows accelerated growth.

July 12, 2012 NEMA's shipment index for halogen A-line lamps shows acceleration in growth during Q1 2012, improving 110% on year over year (y/y) basis. This increase was preceded by gains of 90% and 98% during Q3 and Q4 2011, respectively. Conversely, respective Q1 2012 declines for incandescent lamps and CFLs were measured at 0.3% and 1% y/y. Halogen A-line lamps garnered 2.8% share, double same period from last year, while incandescent lamps and CFLs respectively registered shares of 76.3% and 20.9%.

July 12, 2012 According to AMT, May U.S. manufacturing technology orders totaled $473.92 million. This total, reported by companies participating in USMTO program, was up 14.5% from April and 19.0% when compared to $398.10 million reported for May 2011. With year-to-date total of $2,235.37 million, 2012 is up 12.1% compared with 2011. "While the latest PMI saw a slight dip, overall indications are that manufacturing will continue to lead the way in the general economy," stated AMT President Douglas K. Woods.

BIO Responds to Criticism of Navy's biofuels demonstration.

July 12, 2012 BIO's Brent Erickson issued statement supporting Navy's demonstration of advanced biofuels during Rim of the Pacific international naval maneuvers. Calling oil refinery industry's criticisms of said demonstration meritless, Erickson cited dangers of depending on foreign oil as well as associated costs. According to Erickson, BIO supports U.S. Navy's "strategically important" decision to support "viable, cost-competitive alternatives to foreign oil."

July 12, 2012 In the name of science, but with aim of saving lives, preventing injuries, and reducing property losses, members of New York City Fire Department spent much of the first 2 weeks in July setting fire to 20 abandoned townhouses on Governors Island. In series of live burn experiments, conducted in collaboration with NIST and UL, firefighters challenged conventional wisdom on, and tested new tactics for, controlling fires and rescuing occupants inside burning homes.

North Carolina Leaders call for action on budget sequestration.

July 11, 2012 Leaders of North Carolina's aerospace and defense community wrote to North Carolina's congressional delegation, urging quick action on legislation to repeal $500 billion in program cuts, which could cost N.C. 11,000 jobs. Governor Bev Perdue stated that sequestration cuts are a threat to the nation and the state. According to AIA president and CEO Marion Blakey, budget decisions need to be based on strategy and priorities, not one-size-ruins-all approach of sequestration.

Standard will provide important process step to be used in manufacture of protein-based drugs, such as antibodies and fusion proteins, made to inactive retroviruses.
