NREL Study shows fuel economy benefits of hybrid delivery vans.

October 5, 2012 "Eighteen-Month Final Evaluation of UPS Second Generation Diesel Hybrid Electric Delivery Vans" details impact of hybridization on fuel economy and performance, and identifies conditions under which hybrids offer maximum fuel savings. NREL team collected and analyzed in-service fuel economy, maintenance, and other vehicle performance data on 11 hybrid and 11 conventional step vans. During on-road portion of study, hybrid vans demonstrated 13–20% higher fuel economy than conventional vans.
Construction Spending declines for second month in a row.

October 5, 2012 According to U.S. Census Bureau, construction spending has fallen for second consecutive month, dipping 0.6% in August. However, spending is up 6.5% from one year ago. Nonresidential construction spending fell 1.3% to seasonally adjusted annual rate of $557.2 billion. Year-over-year, nonresidential construction spending is up 2.2%. In addition, residential construction spending increased 0.9% for the month and is 16.1% higher than August 2011.
NIST November Symposium focuses on forensics.

October 4, 2012 NIST announced Keccak, created by Guido Bertoni, Joan Daemen and Gilles Van Assche of STMicroelectronics and MichaŽl Peeters of NXP Semiconductors, as winner of†5-year competition to select new cryptographic hash algorithm. NIST's team praised Keccak for its design qualities as well as its ability to run on different computing devices. With clarity of construction that facilitates analysis, Keccak offered higher performance in hardware implementations than SHA-2 or any other finalist.

October 4, 2012 BP Products North America, Inc. will pay $210,000 penalty,†implement enhanced oil spill response program at its oil terminals nationwide,†and perform compliance audit to resolve alleged violations of oil spill response regulations at its Curtis Bay Terminal in MD. EPA alleged that BP Products violated federal regulations requiring oil storage facilities to conduct drills and exercises to respond to oil spills at its Curtis Bay Terminal.

Part of $500 million 2012 Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training (TAACCCT) Grants Program awards, this funding will enable students to earn skills needed to advance in manufacturing jobs as well as help schools build quality, relevant manufacturing programs.
