ASABE Completely Revises agricultural equipment manual standard.

August 1, 2012 American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) revised its standard for agricultural equipment manuals: ANSI/ASAE EP363.2, Tractors, machinery for agriculture and forestry, powered lawn and garden equipment - Operator's manual - Content and format. This complete rewrite incorporates list of changes. As next step, ASABE will propose EP363.2 be used as basis for revision of corresponding, identically titled international standard ISO 3600:1996.

July 31, 2012 FMA/AAMA/WDMA 300-12, Standard Practice for the Installation of Exterior Doors in Wood Frame Construction for Extreme Wind/Water Exposure, has been published. Standard includes procedures for installing exterior doors into residential and light commercial buildings of 3 stories or less. It addresses integration of doors with mounting flanges, doors with exterior casing/brick molding, and non-flanged box frame units. Similar standard covering window installations has also been published.

July 31, 2012 ASABE announces completion of ANSI/ASABE S588, Uniform Terminology for Air Quality. Use of terminology related to rural air quality has grown with increased focus by U.S. EPA and others on confined animal feedlot operations. Standard establishes uniformity in terms used in the field of rural air quality and serves as resource of useful new terms and definitions. It supplements existing ASTM standards and provides consensus definitions for more than 180 terms.
Measurement System could speed innovation in solar devices.

July 31, 2012 Devised by researchers at NIST, measurement system accurately and quickly measures electric power output of solar energy devices, which is useful to researchers working to develop next-generation solar energy cells. As reported in Applied Optics journal, NIST team combined 32 LEDs-each generating light from different segments of solar spectrum-and other off-the-shelf equipment to build system that measures wavelength-dependent quantum efficiency of solar devices over relatively large area.

Manufacturers Join Alliance to support Pacific Northwest trade.

July 31, 2012 To support increased trade and development of export infrastructure, NAM joined Alliance for Northwest Jobs and Exports. NAM President and CEO Jay Timmons said that policies must be implemented that support investment and job growth in order to keep U.S. manufacturers competitive on global scale. Specifically, Timmons noted that "Strengthening trade in the Pacific Northwest will increase exports and create jobs that support the local economies and help drive manufacturing growth."
Hot Isostatic Pressing Standard is approved by ASTM committee.

July 31, 2012 ASTM A1080, Practice for Hot Isostatic Pressing of Steel, Stainless Steel, and Related Alloy Castings, was developed by Subcommittee A01.18 on Castings in response to general need in steel industry for standard defining basic quality control requirements for hot isostatic pressing. John Schleicher, A01.18 member, said this standard "is intended to demonstrate the minimum amount of process control/monitoring required to control the HIP process."

July 31, 2012 U.S. EPA is seeking total of $362,113 in civil penalties from Chemtura Corporation, Bethlehem Apparatus Company, and Haldor Topsoe, Inc. for alleged violations of reporting and recordkeeping requirements under Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). Alleged violations involve failure to comply with TSCA section 8 Inventory Update Reporting (IUR) regulations, which require companies to submit accurate data about production and use of chemical substances manufactured/imported during year.
NREL Helped Convert Alcatraz from diesel to electric power.

July 30, 2012 NREL helped National Park Service and DOE Federal Emergency Management Program transform Alcatraz Island's electricity source from diesel fuel to photovoltaic (PV) panels on rooftop of Cellhouse building. The former prison is now host to 1,300 solar panels, responsible for powering lights and appliances. PV array (307 kW) on main Cellhouse building roof is attached to two 2,000 amp-hour battery strings and inverter plant. It produces close to 400,000 kW-hr of electricity per year.

July 30, 2012 ASTM International Committee F02 on Flexible Barrier Packaging honored Hal Miller, president of PACE Solutions LLC in Cape May, NJ, with Award of Merit and title of fellow for contributions to global standards for flexible packaging industry. ASTM International Member since 1994, Miller served as chairman of Committee F02 from 2006-2011. He led reorganization effort for F02 as well as helped expand its international presence. Miller is also member of Committee D10 on Packaging.

July 30, 2012 NIST's Common Misuse Scoring System describes scoring system that computer security managers can use to assess severity of security risks arising from software features that, while beneficial to accomplishing task, are at least partially designed under assumption that users are operating these features as intended. CMSS specification allows risk assessment manager to determine vulnerability's potential impact on network and then take remediation steps to secure system.

July 30, 2012 According to North American PCB Statistical Program, rigid PCB shipments were down 7.3% in June 2012 from June 2011, and bookings decreased 2.0% year over year. Compared to previous month, rigid PCB shipments were up 11.6%. Book-to-bill ratio remained above parity at 1.01. Flexible circuit shipments in June 2012 were up 2.1%, and bookings were down 8.4% compared to June 2011. Compared to previous month, flexible circuit shipments increased 29.7%. Book-to-bill ratio remained high at 1.16.

On behalf of BIO, Jeff Hatfield, President and CEO of Vitae Pharmaceuticals, testified about the cost burden associated with Sarbanes-Oxley Section 404(b) compliance. He spoke in support of Rep. Mike Fitzpatrick's (R-PA) Fostering Innovation Act, which would amend filing status definitions to provide regulatory relief to small companies with low public float or little product revenue.
North American Robotics Industry posts best quarter ever.

July 30, 2012 According to statistics released by RIA, North American robotics companies sold more industrial robots in second quarter of 2012 than any previous quarter in history. Total of 5,556 robots valued at $403.1 million were sold to North American companies, a jump to 14% in units and 28% in dollars over same quarter in 2011. Orders in first half of 2012 totaled 10,652 robots valued at $747 million, increases of 20% in units and 29% in dollars over same period last year.
EPA Scientists receive Presidential honor.

July 30, 2012 Two EPA scientists were named recipients of 2011 Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers. Dr. Hazari was nominated for demonstrating how inhalation of low levels of air pollutants like particulate matter and ozone could increase susceptibility to cardiac events. Mr. Eisele developed and used automated air sampling instrumentation in project that was first to identify and characterize local sources of air pollution in high altitude areas.
