October 16, 2012 Released by IPC, 2011–2012 Analysis and Forecast for the EMS Industry shows that, following economic setbacks in 2009, world market for electronics manufacturing services (EMS) continued to recover in 2011 and 2012 and is projected to grow this year 9.4% globally and 8.9% in North America. Annual study, using data from 130 EMS participating operations, includes forecasts through 2016, covers business metrics by region, and examines trends in diverse categories.

Initial investments will help 15,000 veterans translate military experience to corresponding advanced manufacturing opportunities and gain technical skills needed to qualify for careers in this growing sector.

October 16, 2012 ASTM International announces new initiative as Program Operator for Product Category Rules (PCRs) and Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), which will provide venue for developing PCRs and verifying EPDs. According to ASTM's Timothy Brooke, the program will offer "scientifically based, quantifiable information about product parameters such as resource consumption and ozone depletion" in hopes of helping businesses and consumers understand product's environmental impact.

October 16, 2012 At Laser Science XXVIII, collocated with OSA's Annual Meeting – Frontier in Optics (FiO), an Israeli research team will present findings concerning development of portable Raman spectrometer capable of detecting minute traces of hazardous chemicals in real-time.  Able to first scan entire sample optically to locate individual particles of interest, spectrometer in question uses low-power, commercial green laser pointer that helps improve detection of inherently weak Raman signal.

BIO Strongly Opposes RFS waiver requests in comments to EPA.

October 12, 2012 In comments made to EPA on requests by governors of several states for waiver of America's Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS), BIO said that any waiver of RFS would have little to no effect on corn prices and would harm USA biofuel producers and biotech companies. "Stability and growth of biofuels industry," said BIO, "depends on continued and predictable implementation of the RFS to meet the policy's overall goals of expanded production and use of renewable fuels in the transportation sector."
