ASC Brings Up Issues with CA DTSC consumer products proposal.

October 19, 2012 Adhesive and Sealant Council (ASC) has raised continued concerns with California Department of Toxic Substance Control's (DTSC) proposed "Safer Consumer Products" regulation. In written comments to DTSC, Council questioned detailed trade secret information that said proposal could demand and charged agency with positioning itself to judge worth of innovative approaches. ASC also questioned establishment of initial list of 1,200 "Chemicals of Concern" without proven justification.
Plumbing Consortium focus on new lead-free standards education.

October 19, 2012 Plumbing manufacturers and industry trade associations met in Chicago on August 30, 2012 to develop strategies to alert and prepare industry constituents for changes in allowable Pb level in plumbing products as required by federal Reduction of Lead in Drinking Water Act, which takes effect January 4, 2014. Law was spearheaded by PMI, and consortium's mission was to provide education about manufacture, distribution, and installation of Pb-free plumbing products.

October 19, 2012 NASA partner United Launch Alliance has completed fifth and final milestone for its Commercial Crew Development Round 2 (CCDev2) agreement with agency's Commercial Crew Program. The Hazard, System Safety and Probabilistic Risk Assessment detailed how ULA's Atlas V rocket launch system hardware would ensure crew safety during launch and ascent. With completion of CCDev2 milestones, ULA establishes technical foundation for potentially certifying its Atlas V rocket for crewed missions.

Both briefs were initiated and drafted by association’s Educational Services Committee and join mounting body of free, downloadable, educational materials designed to meet needs of bearing distributors and end users by defining specific end-use bearing applications, critical design factors in those installations, and preferred bearing choices.

Researchers say spider's silk can be used to manipulate light.

October 18, 2012 Research shows that natural silk could be an eco-friendly alternative to traditional ways of manipulating light. During OSA Annual Meeting, Frontiers in Optics 2012, biomedical engineer Fiorenzo Omenetto of Tufts University will discuss use of silk's optical properties for implantable sensors and other biology-technology interfaces. Physicist Nolwenn Huby at CNRS Institut de Physiques de Rennes in France will talk about use of natural spider silk to guide light through photonic chips.
ASTM Committee approves standard for developing steel sheets.

October 18, 2012 In quest for lighter, more crash-resistant and fuel-efficient vehicles, automobile and steel industries are developing steel sheets that have higher alloy content, and thus more complex hardening mechanisms, than sheets currently being used. Sheets are covered by new ASTM International standard, ASTM A1079, Specification for Steel Sheet, Complex Phase, Dual Phase, and Transformation-Induced Plasticity, Zinc-Coated or Zinc-Iron Alloy-Coated by the Hot-Dip Process.
EPA awards $30 million for clean diesel projects.

October 18, 2012 U.S. EPA is awarding $30 million for clean diesel projects as part of its ongoing campaign to reduce harmful diesel exhaust that can lead to asthma attacks and premature deaths. Diesel Emission Reduction Program, also known as DERA, is designed to replace, retrofit, or repower 11 million older diesel-powered engines that continue to emit high levels of nitrogen oxides and particulate matter, including those found in marine vessels, locomotives, trucks, and buses.
EPA awards $1.2 million to improve indoor air quality.

October 18, 2012 EPA will provide combined $1.2 million in funding to 32 state and local governments, tribes, and non-profit organizations for IAQ projects, which will better protect health of Americans in classrooms, communities, and homes. Education projects, training, and outreach efforts will help reduce environmental health risks of indoor air contaminants such as asthma triggers. Projects will also increase number of homes tested and mitigated for radon as well as those built with radon-resistant features.

October 18, 2012 Hydraulic Institute has released ANSI/HI 7.6 - 2012 Controlled-Volume Metering Pumps for Test standard for testing of positive displacement reciprocating controlled-volume metering pumps. Standard provides uniform procedures for performance testing and for recording of test results. It covers functional testing of production units, rate of flow and mechanical integrity at speed and pressure specified, and verification of performance to manufacturer's specifications.
NASA, IHMC Develop Robotic Exoskeleton for use in space, on Earth.

October 18, 2012 NASA and The Florida Institute for Human and Machine Cognition (IHMC) of Pensacola, FL have jointly developed X1 robotic exoskeleton. Derived from NASA's Robonaut 2 project, X1 consists of 57 lb robot that humans could wear over their bodies to assist or inhibit leg joint movement. In inhibit mode, device would be used in space as exercise machine. On Earth, robot could be used to help individuals walk for first time. Currently, X1 is in R/D phase.
U.S. Standards Community celebrates World Standards Day 2012.

Bird, ANSI board member and senior policy fellow for workforce and postsecondary education at the Corporation for a Skilled Workforce, urges creation of competency-based skills credentials. In April 2011, Dr. Bird collaborated with Evelyn Ganzglass and Heath Prince of CLASP on a report that found creation of postsecondary credentialing system had the potential to improve civic participation and nationwide family well-being, and trigger local and national economic growth.
NTSB Seeks Comments on final rules for appeals procedures.

October 18, 2012 NTSB issued set of rules addressing review of aviation enforcement cases. Included in new final rule and interim final rule, changes allow appeals to federal district court, apply federal rules of evidence and civil procedure to NTSB proceedings, and allow parties to move to dismiss complaint if FAA fails to disclose its enforcement investigative report. Although interim final rule is effective immediately, NTSB requests public comment concerning changes by December 17.
