Survey finds acquisitions give boost to distributor sales.

August 13, 2012 Welding and Gases Today surveyed members of GAWDA to find out what impact acquisitions are having on their businesses. Results of survey were posted in series of articles on Welding and Gases Today Online. When asked "What impact do you expect industry consolidation to have on your business?", 73% of distributor respondents said it will help their sales moving forward. On the other hand, survey found that 63% of suppliers expect industry consolidation to hurt sales.

Private-sector-led Identity Ecosystem Steering Group will provide open process for organizations to participate in ecosystem development, with goal of crafting framework for identity solutions that can replace passwords, allow individuals to prove online that they are who they claim to be, and enhance privacy.

BETEC Symposium offers insight into fenestration technology.

IAQA Signs MOU with American Industrial Hygiene Association.

August 13, 2012 Indoor Air Quality Association (IAQA) announced memorandum of understanding (MOU) signing with American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA). MOU establishes working relationship between said organizations and encourages collaboration as well as knowledge sharing. By combining their areas of expertise, IAQA and AIHA will address shared indoor air quality and environmental issues. IAQA President Donald Weekes, in comment, said "IAQA is proud to partner with AIHA."

Nonresidential Construction Spending was unchanged in June.

August 13, 2012 According to report by U.S. Census Bureau, total nonresidential construction spending was unchanged in June, as spending remained at seasonally adjusted annual rate of $570 billion. Year-over-year, total nonresidential construction spending is up 5.4%. Residential construction spending was up 1.3% for the month and is 10.7% higher than same time last year. Overall, total construction spending - which includes both nonresidential and residential - was up 0.4% for the month and 7% from June 2011.
Researchers Find Way to reconstruct objects hidden from sight.

August 13, 2012 Researchers from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Harvard University, University of Wisconsin, and Rice University combined photons with advanced optics to see 3D images of objects hidden around corner. This technique is described in "Reconstruction of Hidden 3D Shapes Using Diffuse Reflections," published in Optical Society's (OSA) open-access journal Optics Express. Potentials for this technique include disaster recovery situations and noninvasive biomedical imaging.
EPA announces funding for research to improve air quality.

August 13, 2012 EPA awarded 5 grants totaling $2 million to academic institutions for research and innovative processes to improve air quality in U.S. and track effectiveness of pollution control measures. Grants are focused on generating better data and tools to enable regulatory authorities to ensure air is healthy. Funding covers projects that will examine links between short-term air pollution drivers and existing management strategies, development of decision-making models, and air quality forecasting.
