May 21, 2014 AIA applauds Administration's issuance of revisions to Category XV of the U.S. Munitions List that will end excessive restrictions on space systems, such as commercial satellites. After 6 month delayed implementation, interim final rule will remove many less sensitive technologies from USML and place them under more appropriate controls of Commerce Control List. Revision, together with re-authorization of Export-Import Bank by Congress, would dramatically level global market playing field.
NADCA applauds passage of R&D Tax Credit bill.

May 21, 2014 NADCA applauded passage by U.S. House of Representatives of bill making the Research and Development Tax Credit permanent. Sponsored by Reps. NADCA and its members invest heavily in research and development to create new technologies and processes for lightweight applications, improving energy efficiency, and reducing lead times for procuring latest technologies.

May 21, 2014 Congressman Randy Hultgren (R-IL-14) visited Petroferm, a Vantage Chemicals business, at Lambent Technologies manufacturing facility in Gurnee, IL to learn about priority legislative and regulatory issues impacting electronics manufacturing industry. Hultgren was led around by Petroferm Cleaning's Dan Romani, who spoke on such policy and regulatory issues as export controls, R&D tax credits, and IP protection. Hultgren's visit was part of IPC's "Meet the Policymakers" program.
PTDA releases Business Index for 1Q2014.

May 20, 2014 Quarterly survey of PTDA’s distributor and manufacturer members continues to point to growth, with the PTDA Business Index for 1Q2014 at 63.6, up from 4Q2013 reading of 60.2. However, when asked about their outlook for the entire year, survey participants lowered their expectations from 7% growth to 6% growth, suggesting expectations of weakness later in the year.

EPA announces environmental job training grants.

May 20, 2014 EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy, on a press call with Joe Carbone, President of the Workplace, Inc. and Jason Wimmer, City of Durham, NC, announced 18 grantees for $3.6 million award through the Environmental Workforce Development and Job Training program. Grants fund programs that provide unemployed and under-employed with skills and certifications needed for full-time careers in environmental fields such as recycling, stormwater management, oil spill cleanup, and Superfund site remediation.

FAA proposes civil penalty against Skinfix, Inc.

May 19, 2014 FAA is proposing $63,000 civil penalty against Skinfix, Inc. for allegedly violating U.S. DOT Hazardous Materials Regulations. FAA alleges that on July 10, 2013, Skinfix shipped a quart of ethyl alcohol on a UPS aircraft from Bedford, Nova Scotia to Chatsworth, CA. Investigators determined that shipment was not accompanied by shipping papers to indicate hazardous nature of its contents and it was not marked, labeled, or packed in accordance with the Hazardous Materials Regulations.
SME partners with CAM Logic for THE BIG M Event.

May 19, 2014 CAM Logic is scanning the Spirit of Detroit Statue in front of the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center to create miniature-size statues using 3D printing. These statues will be given out to select group of people at SME’s THE BIG M event, June 9–12 at Cobo Center. To scan the Spirit of Detroit, CAM Logic placed tracker at different locations around statue. The tracker, which detects where laser scanner is located, "spray paints" statue with laser scanner until image is captured in its entirety.

May 19, 2014 As announced by Adhesive and Sealant Council (ASC), 562 attendees participated in Spring Convention and EXPO that was held April 28–30, 2014 in Orlando, FL. This event was co-located with PSA Short Course, which drew record number of 58 participants. ASC President Matthew E. Croson said "ASC members and non-members found the program to be of strong value." Reflecting on "action packed 2.5 days," Croson noted meetings, business connections, and learning that took place there.
NEMA Commends Federal Commitment to energy conserving ESPCs.

May 19, 2014 NEMA's Evan R. Gaddis commended Obama administration for setting ambitious and achievable goal of continuing to use energy savings performance contracts (ESPCs) to upgrade energy efficiency of federal facilities. Specifically, President Barack Obama set goal for federal agencies to enter into $2 billion of ESPCs over the next 3 years. This adds specific target to his December 2013 announcement of continued ESPC use through 2016, bringing total commitment up to $4 billion since 2011.
BIO disagrees with biogenic CO2 emissions categorization.

May 19, 2014 BIO "disagrees with the categorization of biogenic CO2 emissions as equivalent to those of fossil fuels" the trade organization wrote in comments to EPA's Proposed Standards of Performance for Greenhouse Gas Emissions from New Stationary Sources: Electric Utility Generating Units. According to Brent Erickson, executive vice president of BIO’s Industrial & Environmental Section, Electric Utility Generating Units firing biomass, regardless of percentage, should not be subject to proposed standards.

According to BIO President and CEO Jim Greenwood, the R&D tax credit is a vitally important incentive that spurs private-sector funding of the search for new cures and treatments for patients in need. This research not only produces new groundbreaking medical discoveries, but also supports millions of well-paying American jobs.

NIST awards manufacturing technology planning grants.

May 19, 2014 NIST awarded 19 advanced manufacturing technology planning grants totaling $9 million to new or existing industry-driven consortia to develop technology roadmaps aimed at strengthening U.S. manufacturing and innovation performance across industries. Awarded to universities and other non-profit organizations, grants are the first conferred by NIST’s new Advanced Manufacturing Technology Consortia (AMTech) Program. They range from $378,900 to $540,000 for a period of up to 2 years.
FAA proposes civil penalty against VT Milcom, Inc.

May 19, 2014 FAA is proposing $91,000 civil penalty against VT Milcom, Inc. for allegedly violating U.S. DOT Hazardous Materials Regulations.
