Meeting to Address GA airworthiness and design standards.

August 20, 2012 In support of efforts stemming from Part 23 Reorganization Aviation Rulemaking Committee (ARC), ASTM International will host organizational meeting for establishment of new ASTM standards activity on general aviation (GA) airworthiness design standards. Meeting will be held September 17 from 1:00 to 4:00 pm EST in Lee's Summit, MO; virtual attendance option is also available. Standards roadmap proposed to ASTM International addresses requirements to accommodate GA aircraft under 19,000 lb.
ASABE to revise agricultural braking standard.

August 20, 2012 ASABE has initiated project to revise ANSI/ASAE S365.9, Braking System Test Procedures and Braking Performance Criteria for Agricultural Field Equipment. Revision is part of an ongoing effort by ASABE Braking committee to provide state-of-the-art guidance regarding braking technologies. This revision will focus on details concerning the use of implements and towed equipment.

August 20, 2012 Renewable Fuel Standard provides fundamental foundation driving private investment in America's advanced biofuels industry. BIO responded to formal requests by Gov. Bev Perdue (D-N.C.) and Gov. Mike Beebe (D-Ark.) that the EPA waive the Renewable Fuel Standard for 2012. According to Brent Erickson, executive VP of BIO's Industrial and Environmental Section, RFS provides multiple options to fuel distributors obligated to make alternatives to foreign oil available to U.S. consumers.

This total, as reported by companies participating in the United States Manufacturing Technology Orders program, was down 0.6% from May and down 1.8% when compared with total of $471.49 million reported for June 2011. With year-to-date total of $2,682.37 million, 2012 is up 8.8% compared with 2011.

Construction Materials Prices decline for third straight month.

August 20, 2012 According to August 14 Producer Price Index report released by U.S. Department of Labor, construction materials prices declined 0.7% in July 2012. Prices are down 0.6% on yearly basis, marking first year-over-year decline since November 2009. Nonresidential construction materials prices also are down, falling 0.9% for month and 1.2% for year. Meanwhile, crude energy materials prices increased 0.6% - first monthly increase since February 2012 - but fell 19.1% year over year.

August 17, 2012 To warn of chemical attacks and help save lives, it is vital to quickly determine if even trace levels of potentially deadly chemicals-such as the nerve gas sarin and other odorless, colorless agents-are present. U.S. Army researchers have developed new chemical sensor that uses photoacoustic technique to simultaneously identify potentially limitless numbers of agents, in real-time. Paper describing system has been published in Optical Society's journal, Optics Letters.

August 17, 2012 According to Larry Sherwood, author of 2012 Solar Market Trends Report, solar markets are booming in the U.S., despite some high-profile negative news stories. Falling photovoltaic prices, strong consumer demand, and financial incentives from federal government, states, and utilities meant that twice as much PV solar was installed in 2011, compared to 2010. In fact, growth of total installed capacity of utility and non-residential systems grew by 145% and 132%, respectively.

August 17, 2012 Recent articles purport that CFLs emit enough UV radiation to cause skin damage. According to David Sliney, PhD, Chairman of the IESNA Photobiological Safety Committee, this is a complex issue that involves not only radiation levels, but distance from light source and exposure time. Based on current knowledge, levels of UV radiation emitted by CFLs are acceptably low and only under unusual conditions will one be exposed to levels above those set by ACGIH.
