November 20, 2012 NAM President and CEO Jay Timmons issued statement after congressional leaders met with President Obama to discuss the fiscal abyss at the White House. According to Timmons, manufacturers need action on the fiscal abyss because they are already being squeezed by economic uncertainty. Policymakers have a responsibility to protect the American people and prevent the second recession in 5 years. Without action from the President and Congress, 6 million jobs will be lost.

Max Brewer Bridge Replacement project and California DOT earned judges' Grand Prize award for I-405/Sepulveda Pass–Mulholland Bridge Demolition project (Carmageddon). To support charity or academic scholarship program of choice, AASHTO presented $10,000 cash prizes to both DOTs in recognition of their outstanding projects.

"FHWA is proud to work alongside all our partners to advance sustainable transportation practices," said FHWA Administrator Victor M. Mendez.

November 20, 2012 ABNT, the Brazilian member body to ISO, has submitted proposal for new International Standard on process management related to field of research, development, and innovation. According to proposal, standard would include test methods, sampling criteria, safety requirements, and other guidance on RD&I activities that are intended to promote business sustainability and to make it easier for relevant groups to ensure effectiveness and consistence of their RD&I activities.

November 19, 2012 In response to October 2012 employment report, Jay Timmons, President and CEO of NAM, said uptick in jobs is sandwiched between months of job loss and looming fiscal cliff. Manufacturers are increasingly worried that unemployment rate and government policies have lowered GDP by 0.6% this year. Timmons also believes fiscal crisis could lead economy into recession in 2013, with nearly 6 million jobs lost through 2014.
PACK EXPO International 2012 breaks multiple records.

November 19, 2012 PACK EXPO International 2012 took place in Chicago, IL from October 28–31 and covered more than 1.1 million net square feet, up 6% from 2010. Packaging and processing trade show also saw 1,965 exhibiting companies, 45,338 attendees, and 6,749 international attendees which were respectively up 7%, 3%, and over 53% from 2010 levels. This momentum continues, with exhibitors already planning their presence at PACK EXPO Las Vegas (September 23–25, 2013).

New Highway Projects boost Indian construction industry.

November 19, 2012 National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) awarded about 4,375 km of roads in first 9 months of 2012, which can be compared against 4,553 km during 2011, 3,338 km during 2010, and 643 km in 2009. Q3 of 2012 saw ~1,898 km of projects awarded. Projects for road construction sector were awarded under public-private partnership programs, and Indian construction industry is surging via flow of funds and EPC (engineering, procurement, and construction) contracts in 2012.

November 19, 2012 IPC and SMTA announced agenda for Session 6 of High-Reliability Cleaning and Coating Conference (November 13–15, 2012 in Chicago, IL). To be chaired by Dale Lee of Plexus Corp, session will teach process optimization, what it takes to clean no-clean flux residues, material compatibility effects of cleaning agents on adhesives and conformal coatings, improvement in cleaning when reducing oxygen levels during reflow, and process conditions needed to clean bottom-termination components.

NIST Study finds carbon nanotubes may protect DNA from oxidation.

November 19, 2012 In paper, Protective Roles of Single-Wall Carbon Nanotubes in Ultrasonication-Induced DNA Base Damage, NIST researchers provide evidence that nanotubes may protect DNA molecules in laboratory. Fragments of DNA were tested in presence or absence of carbon nanotubes. Research is part of work to help characterize potential risks of nanomaterials, and develop methods for identifying and measuring them. More studies are needed to see if same protective effect occurs in vivo.
