November 9, 2012 To be held February 15–18, 2013, IPC APEX EXPO® will feature IPC Designers Forum to begin with discussion by Dieter Bergman on roadmapping efforts in area of design. Presentations will also be given by Edward Acheson, Daniel DiTuro, Happy Holden, Vern Solberg, and Rick Hartley, while Mark Finstad and Mark Verbrugge will host Ask the Flexperts session. Forum will also feature professional development courses and basic and advanced-level IPC designer certification workshops and exams.

November 9, 2012 Solidifying their coordination, Agreement on Standards has been signed by ASTM International and American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO). In comment, ASTM International President James A. Thomas expressed hope that this agreement "will foster better coordination in mutual areas of interest, reduce unnecessary duplication of effort, and be responsive to industry needs in an efficient and collaborative manner.”
NEMA to Hold U.S. TAG Secretariat for IEC TC120 EES Systems.

November 8, 2012 NEMA has been selected to hold Secretariat of U.S. Technical Advisory Committee (TAG) to IEC TC120 Electrical Energy Storage (EES) Systems, which was created to accelerate integration of renewable energy as well as enable more reliable and efficient supply of electrical energy. This TAG will present consensus U.S. opinions in development of international energy storage standards and coordinate work of U.S. experts who will serve at international level.
SME Receives DOE Grant to focus on energy conservation.

November 8, 2012 SME was granted $292,000 from U.S. Department of Energy to partner SME Student Chapters with 24 Industrial Assessment Centers (IAC) at U.S. universities, providing hands-on industry experience. IAC assessments focus on industrial energy conservation techniques through energy audits and assessments of manufacturers, and grant broadens program to assess manufacturing processes for energy savings. Starting 2012, SME will partner with 6 universities and expand incrementally over 3.5 years.
ASTM develops roadmap for updating nuclear power standards.

November 8, 2012 ASTM developed Roadmap in Support of Commercial Nuclear Power to provide practical set of plans for updating ASTM nuclear energy standards in conjunction with Nuclear Energy Standards Coordination Collaborative. Ultimate goal of roadmap is to ensure safe and economical source of electricity now and in the future. Priorities for commercial nuclear energy include encompassing objectives of NESCC Task Group on Standards Prioritization and building on results of ASTM survey and June 2011 workshop.

November 8, 2012 On the heels of the release of a new standard to ensure proper use of lasers in the research and development environment, LIA has announced new course for safety officers based on that guideline. Taught by Ken Barat, chairman of the committee that put together the ANSI Z136.8, Safe Use of lasers in Research, Development, or Testing Environment standard, new course will prepare LSOs to oversee safe use of laser systems in oftentimes ad hoc situations.

Second half of course will teach the use and application of conformal coating in manufacturing environments.

November 7, 2012 ISO Technical Committee (TC) 205, Building environment design, developed new International Standard – ISO 13153:2012, Framework of the design process for energy-saving single-family residential and small commercial buildings – that provides framework for effective consideration of energy-saving approaches to building of residences and small commercial buildings during various design process stages. Standard also includes 3 annexes intended to facilitate effective usage.

SME Digital Design Award Winners named at RAPID 2012.

November 7, 2012 Announced at SME RAPID 2012 Conference and Exposition, winners of 2012 Design for Direct Digital Manufacturing Competition included 3 entries from University of Louisville, KY. In high school category, 2 winners were announced from Cedar Falls High School in Iowa. Contestants were required to design products representing working prototypes, usable in another assembly, with geometry defined using 3D CAD system capable of producing stereolithography files.

ASCE 55-10, Tensile Membrane Structures, provides minimum criteria for design and performance of membrane-covered cable and rigid member structures, including frame structures.
