December 19, 2012 In a sign of a weak global economy, nation's construction materials prices fell 1.1% in November—the largest monthly decrease since February 2009—according to producer price index report by U.S. Department of Labor. However, prices are 1% higher than the same time last year. ABC Chief Economist, Anirban Basu, stated that investors may be reducing their positions in economically sensitive commodities in response to fears regarding America's fiscal cliff.
Clean Air Standards help reduce harmful soot pollution.

December 19, 2012 In response to court order, EPA finalized update to national air quality standards for harmful fine particle pollution, including soot, setting annual health standard at 12 µg/cubic meter. Fine particle pollution can penetrate deep into lungs and has been linked to premature death, heart attacks, and strokes, as well as acute bronchitis and aggravated asthma among children. By 2020, 99% of U.S. counties are projected to meet revised health standard without any additional actions.
NREL, Johnson Matthey announce collaboration on biofuels.

December 19, 2012 NREL will partner with global specialty chemicals company Johnson Matthey in 5-year, $7 million effort to produce drop-in gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel from non-food biomass feedstocks. Work is to be conducted under Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) and is, according to NREL's Rich Bolin, "a way of leveraging the expertise of two organizations to solve a pressing national and international problem" and improve vapor phase upgrading during biomass pyrolysis process.

December 18, 2012 Translated into Danish, IPC-7527-DK was the idea of Task Group Nordic, IPC’s volunteer standards development group in Scandinavia. Standard covers many aspects of solder paste application, from initial placement on board through production and testing. It addresses basic squeegees, jet dispensers, needle dispensers, and closed print heads, as well as automated paste inspection using cameras or lasers. To equipment operators, 15-page standard serves as reference guide with more than 50 photos.

December 17, 2012 EPA and Consumer Product Safety Commission are collaborating in worldwide research effort to assess any potential impacts of nanomaterials on people’s health and the environment. Used in products ranging from clothing to sunscreen, nanomaterials are about 100,000 times smaller than the width of a human hair. Because of their unique properties, it is important to identify methods that will allow manufacturers to ensure products containing these materials do not harm people or environment.

December 17, 2012 In recognition of their outstanding contributions to physics, NIST scientists J. Alexander Liddle and Ian Spielman have been elected Fellows of the American Physical Society (APS). Liddle's APS citation is for contributions to science and technology of nanofabrication and nanolithography, while Spielman's citation is for work in quantum phenomena at intersection of atomic and condensed matter physics using quantum simulation with ultracold atoms.

Study warns of sequestration impacts to NASA, NOAA programs.

December 17, 2012 According to economic impact analysis report, over 20,000 NASA contractor jobs and over 2,500 NOAA jobs related to weather satellites could be lost in 2013 if Budget Control Act's sequestration mandate takes effect on January 2, 2013. Conducted by Dr. Stephen S. Fuller of George Mason University, study also found that sequestration would deal major damage to those regions with high concentrations of aerospace activity, better known as industry clusters.
