February 13, 2014 BIO thanked Senate Agriculture Committee Chairwoman Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) and Ranking Member Thad Cochran (R-Miss.) on final passage in the Senate of the Federal Agriculture Reform and Risk Management Act of 2013. Brent Erickson, EVP of BIO’s Industrial & Environmental Section, noted, "The Farm Bill’s energy programs are now open to renewable chemical technologies that create new manufacturing opportunities and jobs while improving U.S. economic competitiveness."
W.R. Grace pays toward cleanup of hazardous waste sites.

February 13, 2014 Under bankruptcy plan of reorganization, W.R. Grace & Co. paid over $63 million to resolve claims for environmental cleanups at 39 sites in 21 states contaminated by asbestos and other hazardous substances. Payment includes $54 million for EPA and another $9 million to other federal agencies, including US Department of Interior and US Army. Company continues to be responsible for all sites it owns or operates and for any additional sites that were not known or resolved under earlier settlements.

February 12, 2014 Dr. Brent Grazman, speaking for 2,000+ U.S. electronics manufacturers, brought up industry concerns related to how EPA implemented Section 8 of Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). Pointing out how "EPA's treatment of manufacturing byproducts does not reflect sound priorities," Grazman noted how EPA's interpretation of TSCA causes byproducts to be considered as new chemicals if sent for recycling and how that creates compliance burden for substances already regulated under other statutes.
EPA 2012 TRI shows air pollutants continue to decline.

February 12, 2014 According to U.S. EPA's annual Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) report, releases of toxic chemicals decreased 12% from 2011–2012. This includes 8% decline in total toxic air releases due to reductions in hazardous air pollutant (HAP) emissions. Data on 2012 shows 3.63 billion lb of toxic chemicals were disposed of or otherwise released into environment through air, water, and land. Between 2011 and 2012, toxic releases into surface water decreased 3% and toxic releases to land decreased 16%.

North American PCB Sales for 2013 end slightly below 2012.

February 11, 2014 December 2013 findings of North American PCB Statistical Program show sales ended year at -1.9% compared to 2012 and that book-to-bill ratio improved slightly to 0.92 but remains below parity. North American PCB shipments increased 2.2% from December 2012, and sales were up 6.6% over prior month. North American PCB bookings, which fell to -8.0% year over year, reduced yearly order growth to -1.1% below 2012. December bookings grew 17.7% over prior month.
NEMA publishes roadway and area lighting equipment standard.

February 11, 2014 NEMA published ANSI C136.41-2013 For Roadway and Area Lighting Equipment–Dimming Control Between an External Locking Type Photocontrol and Ballast or Driver. Standard describes methods of light level control between external locking type photocontrol (or similar device) and dimmable ballast or driver for street and area lighting equipment. Mechanical, electrical, and marking requirements are established for dimming, locking type photocontrols, and mating receptacles.

February 11, 2014 ASTM F2826, Test Method for Evaluating the Sustained Air Performance and Exhaust Emissions of Central Vacuum Cleaning Units, was developed by Subcommittee F11.22 on Air Performance. This standard will help manufacturers determine how well their products will perform over time, identify areas in which they might improve their designs, and provide sensible, test-based advertising claims. Interested parties are welcome to participate in developing F11.22 standards.

February 10, 2014 Phase II of National Stormwater Calculator and Climate Assessment Tool package includes future climate vulnerability scenarios. Estimating annual amount of stormwater runoff from specific location, application includes changes in seasonal precipitation; effects of more frequent, high-intensity storms; and changes in evaporation rates based on climate change scenarios. Capabilities add to phase I release, which included local soil conditions, slope, land cover, and historical rainfall records.

Memorandum of understanding outlines key strategies to make multifamily housing more affordable by encouraging building owners and tenants to benchmark their energy and water performance as well as take steps to improve efficiency.
FAA announces that India has been assigned Category 2 rating.

February 10, 2014 Based on a recent reassessment of the country's civil aviation authority, India has been assigned Category 2 rating under FAA's International Aviation Safety Assessment program. This signifies that India's civil aviation safety oversight regime does not comply with international safety standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization. With Category 2 rating, India’s carriers can continue existing service to the U.S., but will not be allowed to establish new service to the U.S.
