May 5, 2014 PACK EXPO owner/producer PMMI, Association for Packaging and Processing Technologies, and International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering (ISPE) announced their joint venture, Pharma EXPO, will be co-located with PACK EXPO Las Vegas, NV (Sept. 28–30) at Las Vegas Convention Center in 2015. PMMI anticipates these co-located events will attract 30,000+ attendees representing 40+ vertical markets and 1,800+ exhibiting companies in 800,000+ ft² net exhibit space.
2014 International CES breaks international attendee record.

May 5, 2014 CEA® announced that results of independent audit confirm record number of international professionals – 40,828 (12.7% increase from 2013 CES) – attended 2014 International CES® from 144 countries. There were also 6,757 press and industry analysts in attendance. Spanning January 7–10, 2014 CES welcomed 160,498 industry professionals overall (5% more than 2013). Outside of audit, CEA confirmed 3,673 exhibitors (12% up from 2013 CES) unveiled their latest tech innovations at 2014 CES.

May 2, 2014 U.S. EPA's Green Power Partnership updated its list of Top 100 organizations choosing to use electricity from such clean, renewable sources as wind and solar power. Top 10 partners appearing on this list include Intel Corporation; Kohl’s Department Stores; Microsoft Corporation; Whole Foods Market; Google Inc.; Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.; Staples; Apple Inc.; City of Houston, Texas; and U.S. Department of Energy.

May 2, 2014 Leveraging capability of clear liquid droplet to bend light and act as lens, process developed by researchers can be used create inexpensive, high-quality lenses for such applications as in-field disease detection, scientific research in lab, and optical lenses and microscopes for education in classrooms. Process is described in "Fabricating Low Cost and High Performance Elastomer Lenses using Hanging Droplets," which appears in Biomedical Optics Express.
North American PCB Book-to-Bill Ratio turns positive in March 2014.

May 2, 2014 March findings from IPC's monthly North American PCB Statistical Program shows return to positive territory. Total North American PCB shipments increased 4.8% from March 2013, strengthening year-to-date shipment growth to -0.8%. Compared to February, PCB shipments rose 18.9%. PCB bookings continued to be negative at -5.5% year over year, while year-to-date order growth improved to -6.9%. Order growth increased 20.9% over February, and book-to-bill ratio strengthened to reach 1.01.

Winners include: University of Florida, Gainsville, FL; Kansas State University, Manhattan, KS; Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI; and Mississippi State University, Mississippi State, MS.
AEM Updates Safety Manuals with illustrative graphics.

April 30, 2014 AEM updated its Roller Compactor and Directional Drilling Tracking Equipment Safety Manuals with pictorial graphics, included in AEM Pictorial Database, that conform to ISO and ANSI standards. These graphics reinforce manual safety text and harmonize with current machine safety sign and manufacturer manual practices. As industry-consensus safety documents, manuals provide safety information to operators but not as substitute for manufacturer manuals.

In response, Violand said he was "truly honored" and that he appreciated the award as well as "the opportunity to help build strong, successful businesses in our industry." Golden Quill will be renamed "Patricia L. Harman Golden Quill Award" beginning in 2015.

April 29, 2014 Claiborne Elementary School (Baton Rouge, LA) won annual Energy Star National Building Competition: Battle of the Buildings, in which teams attempt to obtain greatest reduction in energy use, by nearly halving energy consumption. EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy congratulated all competitors and finalists "for their dedication to reducing emissions and carbon pollution, and for their leadership in increasing energy efficiency to combat the impacts of our changing climate.”
ISO Standard addresses pressure regulator testing.

April 29, 2014 ISO 19973-4:2014 provides test procedures for assessing reliability of pneumatic pressure regulators by testing, using general test conditions and calculation method from ISO 19973-1. Standard applies to manually adjustable and remote-piloted pressure regulators, both relieving and non-relieving, but does not apply to pressure regulators that have a permanent bleed. Standard also specifies test equipment and failure criteria for tests to assess reliability of pneumatic pressure regulators.

FAA Announces Operational UAS Test Site and grants 2-year COA.

April 29, 2014 First of 6 test sites chosen to perform unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) research is operational more than 2 ½ months ahead of deadline. FAA provided North Dakota Department of Commerce team with Certificate of Waiver or Authorization (COA) to begin using Draganflyer X4ES small UAS at its Northern Plains UAS Test Site. Team plans to begin flight operations during week of May 5, and goals include checking soil quality and crops status as well as collecting safety-related operational data.
IPC crowns hand soldering competition winner.

April 29, 2014 At National Electronics Week 2014 in Birmingham, England, 20 competitors showed off their hand soldering skills during IPC hand soldering competition. Andrew Smith, Custom Interconnected Ltd., took first place with score of 167 out of a possible 176. He took home a cash prize of £300 and earned a spot at IPC Hand Soldering WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP. Helen Reynolds of Custom Interconnected Ltd. came in second with score of 157 and Mark Smith of CSM Electronics Ltd. took third place with score of 150.
NEMA Publishes RT 1-2014 to enhance radiation therapy treatments.

April 29, 2014 NEMA, on behalf of Medical Imaging and Technology Alliance (MITA), published NEMA RT 1-2014 Gating Interface, which is intended to enhance safety and effectiveness of radiation therapy (RT) treatments. RT 1 provides key technical information to developers for synchronizing equipment with patient's breathing and other movements during cancer treatment. Also, standard defines technical fail safe provisions to improve interoperability among various manufacturers' devices.
