AEM launches exclusive online REACH training.

June 20, 2014 Available through AEM's Market Access Pathway training platform, REACH training will educate members about compliance with REACH regulations that could otherwise cut off global access to highly regulated markets. Training modules will teach companies and the vendors in their supply chain how to document substances used in manufacturing, their origin, and concentrations in each product. REACH lists 151 substances on its Substances of Very High Concern list and is expected to cover 440 by 2020.

Participants may submit proposals for panels in any of 5 program tracks, and individuals may also submit one proposal for 15 min presentation in any of program tracks.

June 19, 2014 SME and 3D Systems announced collaborative M.Lab21 initiative, which aims to enhance high school industrial arts and vocational education classes by offering starter kits intended to transform shop classes and incorporate additive manufacturing into curriculums. While 3DS will provide starter kits with 3D design and printing technology, SME will work with industry experts to identify knowledge and skills necessary for next generation workforce and develop curriculum based on those needs.

Total of 190 participants from 16 countries were able to catch up on OPC UA technology as well as its distribution and application. During pre-conference, experts gave presentations on interoperability in data and information exchange that is independent from the manufacturer, operating system, and language.
AAMA releases guidelines for skylight installation.

June 19, 2014 AAMA has published AAMA 1607, Voluntary Installation Guidelines for Unit Skylights." This document provides guideline for installing pre-assembled unit skylights onto roof. Intent of standard is to educate by providing clear illustrations and concise commentary on the principles involved to facilitate effective installation practice, when unit manufacturer has not provided such detail in their instructions. Proper preparations and roof safety also are addressed within standard.
NEMA, AASHTO, and ITE release NTCIP 1209 v02.

June 18, 2014 NEMA, AASHTO, and ITE have published National Transportation Communications for ITS Protocol 1209 v02, Object Definitions for Transportation Sensor Systems. NTCIP 1209 v02 includes requirements for communicating between TSS field devices and host or central systems that control and monitor TSS. TSS data describes certain traffic parameters including accurate, near real-time information on traffic flow. It may be acquired using field devices that rely on various technologies to detect vehicles.

Bill creates notifications and certifications CBP must make to Congress before establishing preclearance facilities. Notably, any new location must be served by US carriers and CBP would be required to consult with stakeholders prior to entering into agreement with foreign government.

June 18, 2014 Questioning both inaccurate and incomplete information referenced in the Department of Toxic Substance Control’s Priority Product profile for spray polyurethane foam systems, ASC urged Department officials to remove the document from their website until all corrections were made. ASC also urged DTSC to consider developing an external advisory committee—comprised of experts familiar with the products under review—to evaluate documents for accuracy before they are made public.
AEM calls on Congress to restore Section 179.

June 17, 2014 AEM has called on Congress to restore the small business expensing level, also known as Section 179 expensing, to its previous $500,000 level as well as make it permanent and indexed to inflation. Section 179 expensing gives small business owners more purchasing flexibility by allowing them to immediately deduct the cost of a qualified investment in the year of purchase rather than through multi-year depreciation. Change in tax rule would spur economic growth and job creation.

Among the issues on their agenda, members of IPC called on Congress to pass the Revitalize American Manufacturing and Innovation Act of 2013 (H.R. 2996 and S. 1468), which would establish a National Network for Manufacturing Innovation.
FAA approves first commercial UAS flights over land.

June 17, 2014 FAA has given approval for energy corporation BP and unmanned aircraft systems manufacturer AeroVironment to fly an AeroVironment Puma AE for aerial surveys in Alaska. Hand-launched UAS is about 4 ˝ ft long with wingspan of 9 ft. Using information generated by Puma’s sensors, BP hopes to target maintenance activities on specific roads and infrastructure, which will save time and support safety and operational reliability goals, while helping to protect the sensitive North Slope environment.
NREL Finds Up to 6-cent Per Kilowatt-Hour Extra Value via CSP.

June 17, 2014 "Estimating the Value of Utility-Scale Solar Technologies in California Under a 40% Renewable Portfolio Standard" finds that Concentrating Solar Power (CSP), which can store energy for several hours or more, helps maintain firm capacity when sun is below horizon. According to this report by NREL, CSP can thusly add additional value of 5 or 6 cents per kilowatt hour to utility-scale solar energy in California. This means that at peak demands, CSP can help lower electricity bills.

Nevada’s research will concentrate on UAS standards and operations as well as operator standards and certification requirements. Site’s activities will also look at how air traffic control procedures will evolve with introduction of UAS into civil environment and how these aircraft will integrate with NextGen, the modernization of the national airspace system.
