Human Eye-Inspired Researchers develop natural lens technology.

November 26, 2012 "A Bio-Inspired Polymeric Gradient Refractive Index Human Eye Lens," in OSA's open-access journal Optics Express, explains creation of artificial lens nearly identical to natural lens of human eye and also provides new material approach for fabricating synthetic polymer lenses. Made up of thousands of nanoscale polymer layers, lens may provide more natural performance in implantable lenses to replace damaged/diseased human eye lenses and also enhance ground/aerial surveillance technology.

Merck responded to projected production shortfall for Varicella product franchise by delivering Vaccine Bulk Manufacturing Facility (VBF) Program of Projects in Durham, NC. This 214,000 ft² facility doubled output of vaccine used for chicken pox and shingles.
Aviation Industry and FAA share safety information with NTSB.

November 26, 2012 Department of Transportation’s FAA, airlines, and aviation labor unions announced partnership with NTSB to share summarized safety information that could help prevent accidents. Shared through initiative called the Aviation Safety Information Analysis and Sharing Executive Board, information will help NTSB determine if an accident is a unique event or an indication of systemic risks. Under ASIAS, airlines and unions already voluntarily share safety information with FAA to identify trends.
NREL/DOE Launch Web Tools for alternative transportation.

November 26, 2012 NREL launched interactive Petroleum Reduction Planning Tool and redesigned Department of Energy's (DOE) Alternative Fuels Data Center (AFDC) Web site to help fleet managers, municipalities, and consumers choose alternative fuels and energy efficiency strategies for reducing petroleum use, vehicle emissions, and operating costs. AFDC provides information, data, and tools that facilitate deployment of alternative fuels, advanced vehicles, and fuel economy improvements.

November 26, 2012 According to U.S. Labor Department's producer price index (PPI), USA's construction materials prices fell for first time in 3 months; prices remain 2% higher than one year ago. Nonresidential construction materials prices decreased 0.5% for month, but were 1.8% higher on year-over-year basis. Associated Builders and Contractors Chief Economist Anirban Basu predicted volatile conditions due to U.S. financial market turmoil, instability in Europe, and "the shaky global economy in general."

November 26, 2012 EPA and Department of Justice announced settlement with Yuan Cheng International Group, Inc. and NST, Inc., which resolves allegations that, from 2006 to 2011, companies imported and introduced into commerce 17,521 recreational vehicles, highway motorcycles, and nonroad spark ignition engines without proper EPA certifications required under Clean Air Act to prevent excess emissions of pollutants. Both companies have ceased importing vehicles and engines and are now dissolved.

November 21, 2012 At its annual meeting in Pittsburgh, AASHTO's Board of Directors voted to elect Rhode Island Transportation Director Michael Lewis as AASHTO's president for next year. Mike Hancock, Secretary of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, was elected AASHTO VP. As president, Lewis will emphasize deployment of new technologies, implementation of reforms included in Moving Ahead for Progress in 21st Century Act, and leading AASHTO's effort to pass next surface transportation reauthorization bill.
