May 13, 2014 IPC’s Pb-Free Electronics Risk Management Council has released a white paper, "PERM Council Pb-free Research Priorities" that identifies priority research areas regarding impact and risks associated with lead-free materials in electronics. Research areas include tin whisker failure modes/risk mitigation, complex systems logistics, and lead-free interconnections. Each is explored across avionics, ground-based systems, missiles and aviation systems, space systems, and submarine and sea systems.

EPA announces funding to clean up diesel engines nationwide.

May 12, 2014 EPA announced availability of $9 million in grant funding for clean diesel projects to reduce diesel pollution and emissions exposure from nation's existing fleet of diesel engines. Under this funding, EPA anticipates awarding between 10 and 20 assistance agreements. Various strategies are eligible for achieving diesel emission reductions, such as installing verified exhaust control and idle reduction devices, and vehicle and engine replacement.

May 12, 2014 On May 1, Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett signed a building energy benchmarking and disclosure ordinance, originally introduced by Council member Roger Berliner. Ordinance will give building owners and occupants valuable insights about energy consumption as well as tools to manage energy use effectively.

May 12, 2014 AAMA has released AAMA 2013/2014 Study of the U.S. Market for Windows, Doors and Skylights. According to study, total conventional housing starts in 2013 experienced considerable increase and are forecasted to grow 20% in 2014. Conventional residential window applications increased by 15.8% to 43.9 million units, compared to 37.9 million units in 2011. Nonresidential market increased 9% in 2013 and is expected to continue to increase in 2014 throughout 2017.

Automakers on track in meeting greenhouse gas standards.

May 7, 2014 U.S. EPA released a Manufacturers Performance Report that assesses the automobile industry's progress toward meeting greenhouse gas emissions standards for cars and light trucks in 2012 model year — the first year of this 14 year program. Report reveals that consumers bought cleaner vehicles in the first year of the program than the 2012 GHG standard required, and that automakers are off to a good start in meeting program requirements.

May 7, 2014 NEMA praised House Energy and Commerce Committee for reporting out the Energy Savings through Public-Private Partnerships Act of 2013 (HR 2689). According to NEMA President/CEO Evan R. Gaddis, there is no better example of a public-private partnership than energy savings performance contracts, which this bill encourages. Contracts use private financing to renovate government buildings at no cost to taxpayer in a way that reduces energy consumption, creates jobs, and offers return on investment.

May 7, 2014 NEMA has published NEMA TR 1-2013 Transformers, Regulators and Reactors, which applies to single-phase and polyphase power and distribution transformers. Step-voltage regulators have been added to the scope in this edition and there is now more alignment with IEEE transformer standards. NEMA TR 1 is one of the few standards on the market that lists audible sound levels for these particular transformers.

EPA awards $860,000 to expand use of green infrastructure.

May 7, 2014 EPA announced $860,000 to help 14 communities expand their use of green infrastructure to reduce water pollution and boost resilience to impacts of climate change. Green infrastructure decreases pollution to local waterways by treating rain where it falls and keeping polluted stormwater from entering sewer systems. Green infrastructure tools and techniques include green roofs, permeable materials, alternative designs for streets and buildings, trees, rain gardens, and rain harvesting systems.
