Models at 2013 NAIAS demonstrate growth of aluminum usage.
Aluminum Association Inc    Arlington, VA 22209
January 16, 2013 Vehicles on display at North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) have in common an increased use of advanced aluminum alloys. This increase echoes findings from latest survey of automakers by Ducker Worldwide, which indicated that aluminum is leading material in engine and wheel markets and is seeing fast-gaining market share in hoods, trunks, and doors as well. Automakers have said they plan to increase aluminum use from 327 lb in 2009 to 550 lb in 2025.
Wafer Screening System rejects unusable PV cell candidates.
National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL)    Golden, CO 80401
January 16, 2013 Silicon Photovoltaic Wafer Screening System, developed by NREL scientists, puts pressure on silicon wafers destined to become PV cells in order to find which ones are too fragile to make it through manufacturing process. Able to be retrofitted into assembly line, this instrument rejects weak wafers before they go through enhancement process, conserving time and investment. Cube-shaped furnace exposes a silicon wafer to thermal stress in form of carefully calibrated, elevated temperatures.
Aluminum Association Responds to Maryland deposit legislation.
Aluminum Association Inc    Arlington, VA 22209
January 16, 2013 To conserve resources, Aluminum Association believes all options should be part of conversation to increase recycling and prevent aluminum cans from going to landfills. Aluminum is infinitely recyclable, and one used can may be transformed into new one within 60 days. Industry wishes to reach 75% recycling rate for aluminum cans by 2015, whereas can recycling rate was 65.1% in 2011. Association claimed that states with strong deposit laws have higher rates of recycling than those without.

Fiber Optic Communications may soon get much easier.Fiber Optic Communications may soon get much easier.
National Institute of Standards & Technology    Gaithersburg, MD 20899-1070
January 15, 2013 Researchers from NIST and the University of Maryland's Joint Quantum Institute have potentially found a way to overcome a longstanding barrier to cleaner signals. Their findings, which demonstrate for the first time an error rate far below the "standard quantum limit" for a wide range of light levels, could increase efficiency of fiber-optic systems by reducing both the power needed to send a signal and the number of errors the receiver makes.
NIST Scientists aid in quantum spin liquid discovery.
National Institute of Standards & Technology    Gaithersburg, MD 20899-1070
January 15, 2013 Research team, including scientists from NIST, confirmed suspicions that electrons in crystalline structure called a kagome lattice can form a "spin liquid," quantum state of matter in which electrons' magnetic orientation remains in constant state of change. Research shows that spin liquid state exists in Herbertsmithite, new findings, as revealed by neutron scattering, show evidence for fundamental prediction of spin liquid physics.
