November 14, 2012 More than 215 exhibitors will showcase latest digital health and fitness technologies at 2013 International CES, to run Tuesday, January 8 through Friday, January 11, 2013 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Sports and fitness devices will be featured at FitnessTech TechZone and FitnessTech Conference Track. In TechZone, tele-health systems, robotic aids, and diagnostic and monitoring equipment will also be shown, while Digital Health Summit will feature 5 speakers in health and life sciences field.

November 14, 2012 In 1998, John Turner of NREL demonstrated that he could use sunlight to extract hydrogen from water at 12.4% efficiency. Three hundred articles and news reports followed, and then almost nothing happened. Now, with gasoline at $3.89/gal, there is renewed interest in Turner's work. Japan Society of Coordination Chemistry awarded Turner with Lectureship Award for his work in solar hydrogen and fuel cells and for being a spokesman for hydrogen production via photoelectrochemical water splitting.

ANSI Industry Briefing to address Russia's acceptance into WTO.

November 14, 2012 Officially accepted into WTO in August 2012, Russia has made commitments to provide foreign companies with tools to prevent trade interference from non-tariff barriers. On November 16, ANSI will hold briefing to inform members of U.S. industry about implications of these commitments and gather feedback about standards, compliance, and market access priorities involving Russia. U.S. exports to Russia exceeded $8 billion in 2011, and are expected to rise with country’s membership in WTO.

November 14, 2012 ANSI has released updated ANS Key Steps document containing rundown of steps involved in approval of voluntary consensus standards as American National Standards. New version features embedded links, giving stakeholders access to relevant forms and information. To qualify for ANSI accreditation, organizations must meet Institute's requirements for openness, balance, due process, and consensus in their standards development processes, as set-forth in ANSI Essential Requirements.

As a PRIME school, Westfield Vo-Tech will receive funds totaling $35,000 for 3 years to support post-secondary scholarships, equipment upgrades, continuing education for instructors, and a STEM-based camp for middle school students.

November 13, 2012 FAA is proposing $246,450 civil penalty against Woodward, Inc. and subsidiary HRT for allegedly failing to conduct requisite drug tests and receive verified negative drug test results before transferring/hiring 12 people to perform safety-sensitive aircraft maintenance work. Additional allegations cover failure to include 6 individuals in random drug and alcohol testing pool; failure to administer return-to-duty drug test to one employee; and use of expired intoximeter bottle.

ASABE Revises Standard on densified products for bulk handling.

November 12, 2012 American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) revised standard ASAE S269.5, Densified Products for Bulk Handling – Definitions and Methods, which was previously entitled Cubes, Pellets, and Crumbles - Definitions and Methods for Determining Density, Durability, and Moisture Content. Specifically, revision includes use of biomass pellets and cubes.

November 12, 2012 FAA proposed $359,350 civil penalty for allegedly failing to conduct pre-employment drug tests and receive verified negative drug test results before hiring 17 people to perform safety-sensitive functions. Other allegations include failure to test 4 random individuals for alcohol use in January, April, and July of 2011; failure to carry out all requisite drug and alcohol testing for 2 employees as part of return-to-duty process; and inappropriate post-accident drug testing of 2 employees.

November 12, 2012 FAA is proposing a civil penalty of $205,250 against Circor Aerospace, Inc., a Sylmar, CA-based aircraft repair station, for allegedly violating FAA drug and alcohol testing regulations. FAA alleges Circor failed to conduct required pre-employment drug tests and receive verified negative drug test results before hiring 29 people to perform safety-sensitive aircraft maintenance work. FAA also alleges the company failed to include two individuals in its random drug and alcohol testing pool.
Johnson Space Center preparing for new era in space travel.

November 12, 2012 NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston is optimistic about a new era of space travel involving humans flying to faraway asteroids. According to Michael L. Coats, director of JSC, who will speak at ASME 2012 International Mechanical Engineering Congress in Houston, human space travel has received bipartisan support in U.S. Congress, and there are research programs under way to study adaptability of the human body to long-duration flights.

Seven of the top 10 manufacturers will showcase their latest technologies on the CES show floor, including Audi, Chrysler, Ford, General Motors, Hyundai, Kia, and Subaru, which is exhibiting at CES for the first time in 2013. Automotive exhibits will cover more than 100,000 net sq-ft of exhibit space in 2013, up 5% over 2012 show.
