May 16, 2012 ASTM has published collection of 40 peer-reviewed papers that were first presented at the 18th International Federation for Heat Treatment and Surface Engineering Congress. Topics cover many aspects of geotechnical and geoenvironmental construction, including corrosion, diffusion processes, equipment, materials characterization, modeling and simulation, new materials, plasma technology, PVC and CVD, quenching and quenchants, surface hardening, and tribology.

May 15, 2012 Adhesive and Sealant Council's (ASC) Spring Convention brought 450 attendees to Denver, Colo., for 2½ days of education, supply chain interaction, and networking. As sixth most well attended iteration in past 25 years, convention featured 4 keynotes, 39 educational sessions, 63 EXPO exhibitors, and waterborne short course. Attendees were exposed to variety of trends, issues, and opportunities from primary sources. Event also let leaders reconnect and establish new business relationships.

May 15, 2012 BSA has elected Linda Miller, Bearings and Drives, Inc., as President; James Webster, DXP Enterprises, Inc. as Chairman of the Board; Jack Simpson, Applied Industrial Technologies, as Vice President; and Brian Negri, Jamaica Bearings Company, Inc., as Treasurer. In addition, Brian Davis of Bearings and Drives, Inc., Mitch Bouchard of General Bearing Service Inc., and Tom Armold of Applied Industrial Technologies were elected to serve 3 year term on Board of Directors.

May 15, 2012 BSA presented its 10th Lifetime Achievement Award to Peter Negri, president and CEO of Jamaica Bearings Company, Inc., at 2012 BSA Annual Convention in Bonita Springs, Fla. In 1971, Peter started working full time for Jamaica Bearings, a family business where he had worked part time and summers since 1960. Negri has been involved with BSA since his early years with Jamaica Bearings. He chaired several committees and after serving on the Board of Directors, was elected president in 1986.

May 15, 2012 According to AMT, March U.S. manufacturing technology orders totaled $495.97 million, up 11.3% from February but down 1.4% when compared with total of $502.89 million reported for March 2011. With year-to-date total of $1,356.70 million, 2012 is up 12.9% compared with 2011. In addition, manufacturing added 34,000 jobs in March, and capacity utilization is just shy of 80%. These numbers and all data in report are based on totals of actual data reported by companies participating in USMTO program.

May 15, 2012 AAMA 502-12, "Voluntary Specification for Field Testing of Newly Installed Fenestration Products", establishes requirements for field test specimens, apparatus, sampling, test procedures, and test reports used in verifying air infiltration resistance performance and water penetration resistance performance of newly installed fenestration products. Revision clarifies language regarding field testing on project specific size windows that are smaller than minimum Gateway size identified in NAFS-11.

May 15, 2012 EPRI has been involved in broad collaborative industry initiative since 2009 that is working to identify set of common smart inverter functions. According to EPRI's report, titled Common Functions for Smart Inverters, devices interface AC Grid with DC energy sources, provide grid with wide array of support functions, and deliver both real and reactive power. Inverters can respond to remote commands as well as both steady-state and dynamic changes in grid frequency and voltage.

May 14, 2012 Working with states and tribes, EPA is identifying areas that meet or do not meet 2008 air quality standards for ground-level ozone, known as smog. EPA has determined that 45 areas, including 2 areas of Indian country, are not meeting 2008 standards based on certified air quality data. Almost all of these already have programs in place to improve air quality because they did not meet 1997 smog standards. Only 3 areas will be identified for first time as not meeting smog standards.

May 14, 2012 U.S. EPA published its list of 28 chemicals and 2 viruses that ~6,000 public water systems will monitor from 2013-2015 as part of EPA's unregulated contaminant monitoring program. Data collected under Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule 3 (UCMR 3) will inform EPA about frequency and levels at which these contaminants are found in drinking water systems across USA and help determine whether additional protections are needed to ensure safe drinking water for Americans.

May 14, 2012 Brendan M. Kutler Memorial Scholarship Program announced Aaron Lewis Ashley as its first recipient. Ashley was head of Gretna High School rocketry team, which participated in AIA's annual Team America Rocketry Challenge (TARC), and distinguished himself among the 80 qualified applicants via his written application and his oral interview. This $5,000 annual, 4-year scholarship is open to all students who participate in TARC competition during their Junior or Senior years of high school.

May 14, 2012 FAA is awarding contract to ITT Corp. and GE's Naverus to help accelerate development of satellite-based procedures that will allow aircraft to fly more directly to their destinations. Under this $2.77 million contract, ITT Corp., as prime contractor, and GE's Naverus, as sub-contractor, will develop Required Navigation Performance (RNP) approach procedures into 5 airports. Companies will be responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining 10 procedures, 2 for each airport.

May 14, 2012 Steve Pudles, Chairman of the Board of IPC, testified before Congress to urge common-sense changes to U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission proposed rule on conflict minerals. IPC is advocating changes to draft SEC rule implementing Section 1502 of Dodd-Frank Act that would lessen burden on small manufacturing companies. Pudles recommended inclusion of reasonable phase-in provision to give companies time to understand final regulations and query supply chains accordingly.

May 11, 2012 Transgenic plants contain gene or genes that have been artificially inserted, rather than acquired through plant's natural pollination process. Pesticides are used for control of insects, weeds, or fungi on crops. Proposed standard, ASTM WK36581, Practice for in Vitro Rearing of Honeybee Larvae, would use honeybee larvae as surrogate to determine if transgenic crops or pesticides would harm honeybees or other beneficial insects in nearby areas.

May 11, 2012 ASTM Subcommittee E54.05 has begun to develop ASTM WK36550, Specification for Applying Cable Barrier Systems to Provide Physical Protection Along the Passive Perimeter Around Assets Requiring High Security Against Vehicular Threats. According to E54 member Paul Bulten, proposed standard will aid users in finding direction needed to determine appropriateness, crash rating type selection, and how to ensure system installed has capability equivalent to test-proven system.
