January 29, 2013 ISO TC/197 will review activities of working groups, discuss strategy for collective ownership of documents, and discuss merits of restarting work of 2 groups where documents failed to reach consensus within ISO timeframes. To prepare for discussions, 2 ballots have been circulated to member countries for vote: N563, vote on cancellation of ISO 15869, Gaseous hydrogen and hydrogen blends - Land vehicle fuel tanks; and N564, vote on cancellation of ISO 20100, Gaseous hydrogen - Fueling stations.
IEC/TC 105 Update details active and inactive Working Groups.

January 29, 2013 International Electrotechnical Committee on Fuel Cell Technologies (IEC/TC 105) continues to develop and update International Standards needed by industry for wide-scale fuel cell commercialization and adoption. As of January 2013, there are 8 Working Groups with various states of activity regarding publications, approvals, and drafts. There are also 7 Working Groups with no current activity.

January 29, 2013 NIST, through its Small Business Innovation Research program, invites small businesses to propose solutions to specific challenges in the fields of cybersecurity and manufacturing. SBIR Phase I awards provide up to $90,000 over performance period of 7 months and are intended to determine if proposed research is feasible and how well awardee performs that research. Phase I awardees are eligible to apply for Phase II funding to further develop their technology.

January 28, 2013 ABC released its Construction Confidence Index, which reflects 3 aspects of U.S. nonresidential construction industry: sales prospects, staffing levels, and profit margins. During second half of 2012, sales expectations fell from 66.3 to 62.3, while profit margins dropped from 56.3 to 55.9 and staffing levels declined from 62.2 to 59.6. According to ABC Chief Economist Anirban Basu, ongoing lack of confidence continues to produce small and halting gains in nonresidential construction spending.

January 28, 2013 Standards Institution of Israel, Israel’s member body to ISO, has submitted a proposal for a new international standard that would create guidelines intended to assist in the promotion of the use and implementation of all types of management standards in organizations around the world. The guidelines, which would not be mandatory requirements, are also intended to bolster familiarization with standards and awareness of the possible benefits of management standards.
ANSI and IREC Launch certificate program accreditation program.

January 28, 2013 ANSI and IREC announced that ANSI-IREC program for accreditation of renewable energy and energy efficiency certificate programs has completed its pilot phase and is now accepting general applications. Program evaluates certificate-awarding schools, colleges, and other institutions against requirements for equipment, curriculum, facilities, administration, and personnel set forth in IREC Standard 14732. Program staff will host February 14 webinar to discuss this new program.

January 28, 2013 By carefully controlling shape of water droplets with UV laser, team of researchers from Australia and France has found a way to coax silica nanoparticles to self-assemble into more highly uniform silica wires. Team describes manufacturing technique and potential applications in paper published in OSA's open-access journal Optics Materials Express. Technique is significant because it could, for first time, enable silica to be combined with any material through process of microwire self-assembly.

January 28, 2013 Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Energy Association (FCHEA) has submitted 11 public comment proposals to National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) for 2015 edition of NFPA 2: Hydrogen Technologies Code. Said proposals, which relate to Chapters 10, 12, and 17, clarify existing requirements, ensure harmony with NFPA 853, add language pointing to requirements for parking garages in other NFPA codes, and update code requirements for various checks and tests.
